ISSUE 1 Friday 9th September

Education is not the filling of a pail but the
lighting of a fire.
William Butler Yeats
Dear Parents and Pupils,
The first newsletter of the new academic year and I hope
it has been a positive and successful few days for you all.
While we continue with our weekly newsletter we are
moving towards posting a great deal of information on
the Schoology portal. Mr Phil Hart has devoted many
hours to this new project and I have been very pleased at
how the portal has become so widely used by teaching
staff throughout the school. While still in its infancy we
see this system as one that will allow for enhanced
communication, clarity of purpose and helpful
interaction between parents, pupils and teachers. I urge
those who have not yet logged on to do so immediately
and I thank all those who have taken the first steps.

We
have some
vacancies for parental
representation and we are seeking nominations. If
interested,
please
contact
me
at
head@bisc.wroclaw.pl The Advisory Board was
established by the school owners to assist in
formulating school strategy through consultation. It
is not a governing body but a useful forum for the
owners to receive input from the school community.
Safety is a major responsibility for me and we are
already focusing on ways to enhance the health &
safety of pupils at school. Last Friday many staff
attended a H&S seminar to update them on
procedures and regulations and we are revising our
excursions policy in light of this. We also completed
the first fire drill this week to ensure that all staff
and pupils are fully acquainted with the evacuation
procedures.

We are also recommencing the Polish language lessons

for parents starting from next week and I encourage you
to sign up for this programme with Ms Ania Sawiel. We
are running two levels, beginners and intermediate.

BISC Wroclaw is delighted to announce that in

addition to the current
status as a szkoa
podstawowa we have also gained the status and
authorisation as a Polskie Gimnazjum and this will
allow us to enrol Polish citizens in Years 8, 9,10 & 11
(Gimnasium I,II & III). This is effective immediately
from September 2016. Polish pupils in Gimnasium
will receive end of year certificates (wiadectwa)
and will attend a number of lessons in Polish
literature, culture history, Mathematics and sciences
that complement the international programme that
we offer. I extend my thanks to Ms Magdalena
Mrozowska, Dyrektor Szkoly Podstawowej &
Gimnazjum at BISC, Ms Katarzyna Kluka,
Administrator,
and
Mr
Wiesaw
Ogiski, BISC Co-Director, for the efforts in fulfilling
all the criteria for this authorisation.

The Advisory Board holds its first meeting of 2016-2017

st
academic year on Wednesday 21 September at 4.00pm.

I have the pleasure of teaching Year 6 Clouded

Leopards this week and we have been focusing on

Our extra-curricular programme is also ready to launch

and I am delighted to announce the provision of after
school swimming twice a week starting from Week III at
school. Full details are included inside.

literary extracts with the theme of school. We have

integrated this with the basic human right to an
education. One focus has been the civil rights
movement in the United States in the 1960s to
challenge the segregation of schools where AfroAmerican children were refused entry to all-white
schools. The pupils had a great difficulty
comprehending the emotion of the time and we are
blessed to live in a time and attend a school where
diversity is celebrated and where we are all
enriched by this diversity.
The little girl, Ruby Bridges, protected by US
Marshals, courageously defied the angry protestors
who wished to maintain segregated schools in
certain US states. It is through such courage that we
can change the world; a little girl from Louisiana is
living proof of this.

Best regards,
Tom McGrath
Head of School

News from Head of Primary

Welcome back after the summer
holidays! Another year in BISC, its
eleventh year, has begun. Lot of
things remained the same but we
have quite a few changes too! First
of all, we have a new Headmaster,
Mr McGrath. We have two new
teachers, Ms. Ashleigh Britton in
Year 4 Owls and Mr Gene Goldman
in Year 6 Wolverines. Some of our
teachers are beginning new stages in their lives Ms.
Nancy is about to have her second child
(congratulations!) while some experience less
fortunate moments, like Ms. Schier, who broke her
foot and is currently recovering at home. We hope she
will join us soon!
We commenced this school year with more computers,
new textbooks and innovative teaching ideas. I am sure
you have familiarised yourselves with our newest toy
Schoology. We trust it is going to improve
communication within our BISC community.
This Friday we had our first assembly, which was also
our House assembly. Our House Team Ms. Jen and
Ms. Iwona made sure each House revised their call,
song and secret handshake.
The form tutors have chosen their first Stars of the
Week:
Foundation Bees and Bears - whole class : )
Year 1 Rabbits - Deniz
Year 2 Dragonflies - Krishna
Year 3 Foxes - Joseph
Year 4 Owls - Oliwia R.
Year 4 Shoebills - Dong Yeong
Year 5 Coyotes - Nohyeon
Year 6 Wolverines - Alex and Angiras
Year 6 Clouded Leopards - Cecilia
Congratulations, Stars!
I wish all the BISC pupils a happy, adventurous and
fulfilling year at our school.
Wishing you a nice weekend,

News from Head of Secondary

Welcome back students! It was
terrific to see our secondary
students back in the classrooms
again.
Although there is some rearranging
to be done with certain student
timetables, it was a smooth week for
everyone. Updated timetables will
be given to the students on Monday
to reflect minor changes due to
course selections and teacher
availability.
I wish to thank parents for their efforts to get registered
with Schoology this past week and checking student
homework on the website each evening. For parents who
have not had a chance to sign up, please register soon.
Important information about upcoming events and teacher
requests are uploaded daily to Schoology. If you need
assistance with Schoology registration, please notify the
school and we will assist you.
Enjoy your weekend,
Joe Peck

Spotlight on Foundation Bees and Bears

Welcome to Bees and Bears at BISC Wroclaw! We
hope you had a wonderful and restful summer and
are as excited about the upcoming school year as we
are.
Our first week at Foundation has been a lovely
beginning to what is sure to be a wonderful year! We
really enjoy getting to know all of the children that
are new to the Foundation and seeing how much our
returning children have grown and changed over the
summer.
All the children seem to have settled in to their new
routines extremely well. We have enjoyed watching
new friendships blossoming and the reconnecting of
friends from last year.
This week was packed full of fun! Through play both
indoor and out, we have had the opportunity to get
to know our little bees and bears. During this first
week of school the children have already been
learning to recognize and remember all of the
childrens and the teachers names and they have
learnt new songs, stories and poems. It has been fun
for the children to experiment with pencils, scissors,
paint, glue and, of course, playdough always a
favorite. Some children have enjoyed music and
movement activities and singing with each other,
while others were busy building a train track or
experimenting with water at the sensory area. We
also had introduced Jolly Phonics to the children and
they had fun discovering all songs and games related
to letter sounds. With the great weather the children
have been enjoying a little extra outside play.
They are eager, energetic and creative group of
children and it is delightful to see so many smiling
faces each day!

School Uniform
I wish to compliment our pupils and their parents on the very clear adherence to the uniform
guidelines in the first week at school. I have spoken to a number of parents, many new arrivals, and I
am aware of a number of difficulties caused by delays in delivery and the lack of clarity in the
requirements.
I am also aware that various versions of the uniform has crept in and there is a need of greater clarity
and ease of purchase for parents. I am meeting with the PTA leadership in the coming days and the
matter has been discussed at the Senior Leadership Group. We believe we now have a strategy that
will achieve the folllowing:
1. Ensure clarity and reduce the many variations and combinations available.
2. Decrease delivery times significantly.
3. Reduce costs and ensure that the uniform remains unchanged for a number of years.
4. Increase the smart appearance of pupils throughout the school.
5. Finally reduce parental anxiety.
I am aware that parents have purchased uniform this year and this will be a transition year with
September 2017 the date when we will achieved full adherence to a very strict policy, understood
and accepted across the school.
I hope to be able to communicate our decisions following the upcoming PTA meeting and I again
thank you for your patience on this matter.
Kindest Regards,
Tom McGrath
