RESIDENT PROFILE

Kim and Bob Mattle

Bob and I have been married for 30 years and have three
wonderful sons. Our oldest is married and they just had
our first grandson in February. The other two are in the Air
Force and recently returned home from their deployment
overseas. They are both engaged and the next year is going
to be filled with showers and weddings. It will be exciting to
have three daughter-in-laws.
We have friends who bought a home in Festival and they
told us about it and how much they loved it. So, four years
ago we decided to come visit and see for ourselves. We
were here only one day and bought a home. We were sold
on the lifestyle and friendliness of everyone in the community. When Bob and I got married he always told me he
wanted to retire and move to Arizona. His dream came
true.
We have lived our whole lives in Upstate New York (Rochester) and as you can imagine it is a beautiful place in the
summer but the winters are harsh and very long. At first
we could only be here a few weeks at a time since we were
both still working. Last year Bob retired after 35 years as a
plumber/pipefitter. I had already retired from my receptionist job. We decided to sell our home in New York and move
to Arizona full-time.
Back home our church was a very big part of our lives.
Leaving it and our church family was difficult. We are so
pleased that we found a wonderful church here in our community. The people have made us feel so welcome. Both
Bob and I have also found Bible studies that we enjoy.

advantage of all the amenities that Sun City Festival has

to offer. So far I have taken classes in pottery and glass
arts, and have joined the knitting club. Im looking forward
to spending more time with all of them. Bob plans to get
involved in the wood shop, plays golf, and enjoys his time
in the gym. We both have found pickleball to be fun and a
great way to get exercise. We are making a lot of friends
and have met many from our time spent at the pool and
playing cards with the Players Club. We just purchased a
Polaris RZR and cant wait for all the fun we are going to
have with it. There is just so much to do here we dont have
enough time to fit it all in.

We are excited to start our new life here and to take

Thanksgiving Fun Facts

Thanksgiving Facts Throughout History

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national

bird of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation
October 3, 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.
The annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition
began in the 1920s.
In 1939, President Roosevelt proclaimed that Thanksgiving would take place on November 23rd, not November
30th, as a way to spur economic growth and extend the
Christmas shopping season.
Congress passed a law on December 26, 1941, ensuring
that all Americans would celebrate a unified Thanksgiving
on the fourth Thursday of November every year.
Since 1947, the National Turkey Federation has presented
a live turkey and two dressed turkeys to the President. The
President does not eat the live turkey. He pardons it
and allows it to live out its days on a historical farm.

Fun Facts about Thanksgiving Today

In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the
Thanksgiving celebrations.
Each year, the average American eats somewhere
between 16 - 18 pounds of turkey.
Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the
United States.
Although, Thanksgiving is widely considered an American holiday, it is also celebrated on the second Monday
in October in Canada.
Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the
United States, where it is the beginning of the
traditional Christmas shopping season.

Fun Turkey Facts

The average weight of a turkey purchased at

Thanksgiving is 15 pounds.
The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about
the size of a large dog.
A 15 pound turkey usually has about 70 percent white
meat and 30 percent dark meat.

CHOLESTEROL:
THE GOOD AND THE BAD

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C..

Fitness/Wellness Director

What is cholesterol? Its something in our body which should not be too high and
can cause heart problems. But, what IS cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, soft, fat-like substance found in our blood and in all the bodys
cells. Used for producing hormones, vitamin D and cell membranes, cholesterol
serves many needed functions in our body. Our bodies produce about seventy-five
percent of our cholesterol. Twenty-five percent of our cholesterol comes from foods
we eat. Cholesterol is found only in animal products. Unable to dissolve in the
blood, cholesterol must be transported to and from cells by special carriers called
lipoproteins. The most important of these are high-density and low-density lipoproteins (HDL and LDL).
LDL is known as bad cholesterol. Too much LDL can clog arteries and will increase risk of heart attack and stroke. Our bodies naturally produce LDL with some
of us inheriting genes causing overproduction. Eating saturated and trans fats can
increase our LDL.
HDL is known as good cholesterol. HDL prevents LDL from sticking to artery
walls and causing clogs. These clogs can lead to heart disease, heart attacks and
strokes. Research shows HDL can be increased with regular exercise and eating a
balanced, nutritious diet low in trans fats.
Triglycerides are another form of fat in the body. Like other cholesterol, triglyceride
comes from the foods we eat and the bodys natural production. Triglycerides are
also produced when consumed carbohydrates are not immediately used in our tissues and need to transport fat cells for storage. When the body needs fats for fuel,
hormones release triglycerides from cells so they can be burned.
While cholesterol is a necessary compound in our body, too much can be hazardous and lead to clogged arteries, heart disease, or stroke. Cholesterol in our body
comes from natural production and from our diet. Optimal levels of cholesterol are
less than 200 mg/dL for total cholesterol, less than 100 mg/dL for LDL, and HDL
greater than 40/50 mg/dL for women and men, respectively. Triglycerides should
be lower than 150 mg/dL. Cholesterol is best controlled through regular exercise,
working with a physician (including screening), a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat, and maintaining a healthy body weight.
