1950s European Adventure Leads To Book

Joe Hahn of Fenton
publishes account of
trip 60 years later
by Mary Shapiro

To Joseph Hahn of Fenton, a 6,000mile trip through Europe at the age of

21 was the most outstanding thing in
his life.
And now, at age 81, Hahn is
recalling those memories in a new
book, Hitchhiking Through Europe
During the Summer of 1956, released
this month.
Recorded originally as Hahns
diary 60 years ago, the 260-page
book describes the then-Westminster
College students travels through
England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden,
Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy,
Switzerland and France.
He made the tour just before
entering the Army, spending six
months on active duty and, later,
seven-and-a-half years in the reserves,
eventually leaving as a first lieutenant.
Hahn grew up in south St. Louis
with parents Joe and Ruth Hahn and
younger sisters Janet and Carol. He

graduated from what was then St.
Louis Country Day School in 1953.
The reason I went to Europe
actually started in 1932, Hahn
recalled.
My parents were married that

year, and, when they got engaged,

my grandfather, also Joe Hahn who
owned the old J. Hahn Bakery Co. in
St. Louis gave mom and dad a fourand-a-half-month wedding trip to
Europe as long as my grandparents

also could go, Hahn said. They used

Rosswangen, Germany, where his
grandfather was born, as a base.
In 1955, the Hahn family took their
own European vacation.
While in college, one of Hahns
professors was Felix Sharton, of
Germany, who was one of the judges
on the Nuremberg trials.
Hed set up a tour of about 15
people each summer to Europe, Hahn
said.
In 1955, my mom, dad, I and my
two sisters went on the tour, Hahn
said. After everybody else went home,
our family went to Rosswangen to visit
relatives. Dad even threw a party at
the hotel the last day we were there.
A relative, Elfriede Butz, was his
companion at the party, and the two
later became pen pals.
On the ship going back, he met
two girls attending the University of
Minnesota who had been hitchhiking
that summer through Europe.
So I asked my dad if I could go back
there the next year, Hahn said. He
said to go ahead but only if Id spend
my own money, said Hahn.

Hitchhiking Through Europe In 1956

He took six stenographer books on
the trip, and they became his diary.
Each night before bed, I wrote
down everything I did that day, he
said.
The trip itself only cost him $160,
though he spent $720 all told, including
plane and ship transportation.
Contacts the young Hahn made
during his European trip with his
family in 1955 served him well on his
solitary backpacking venture in 1956.
He became a pen pal with a hotel
waitress, Traute Zellinger, in Vienna.
On the ship back to America
in 1955, he met a drummer, Eric
Hammond, 20, from Preston, England,
who became a pen pal. The two girls
suggested he could stay free with Rev.
Francis Schaeffer, who ran the LAbri
chalet in Switzerland.
And the mother of Hahns best
friend Roland, Greta Webb of Clayton,
had a brother, Dr. Walter Hynek, who
lived in Vienna.
So the places I certainly wanted to
go in 1956 were to visit Elfriede, Eric,
Dr. Schaeffer, Dr. Hynek and Traute,
Hahn said. Other than that, people
would pick me up and invite me to
stay. No one charged me.
The only harrowing experience I
had was when a guy drove me at 120
miles per hour through mountains.
He wrote to his parents every few
days, totaling 12 letters.
When I was 40 in 1974, as a
Christmas present, my parents
gave me a scrapbook of the letters I
sent to them they later became an
addendum to the book, Hahn said.
In 1957, after his European
vacation, Hahn went on to graduate

from Westminster with a degree in
business administration.
He worked many jobs, including
with his father, who ran the old
Equality Savings and Loan and
the former Hahn-Lippelmann and
Company real estate firm.
Hahns also been an examiner
for the Missouri Division of Savings
and Loan Supervision, a right-ofway negotiator and relocation agent
for the Missouri Department of
Transportation, obtained cell tower
leases for Sprint, Nextel and AT&T,
and finally helped acquire land for
runway expansion at Lambert Field
until retiring in 2000. He also owned
and operated five laundromats for 50
years, selling them in 2011.

Hahn has been married to his wife

Nubia, from Bogota, Colombia, for 20
years. They met through a Riverfront
Times personal ad. They lived in her
Brentwood home for 18 years before
moving to Lakeview Park Retirement
Community in Fenton a couple of
years ago.
Hahn has been divorced twice. His
children include Kuhrt, Kristopher,
Karl, Kerry, and Kelle from his first
marriage and Kjell and Kasye from
his second marriage. He has 12
grandchildren.
The idea for a book about his
adventures came from fellow Lakeview
resident Tom Yager, a retired John
Burroughs School math teacher.
I had typed up my longhand diary

many years ago, and Tom told me

he thought I was a good author and
should get this published, Hahn said.
A TV ad for Page Publishing Inc. in
New York prompted Hahn to give the
firm a call.
I called them, and they asked for
a copy of my transcript for review,
Hahn said, noting the publishing
company takes only 75 out of 1,000
submissions each month. Two weeks
later, they said theyd like to publish
my book.
With his newly-published book in
hand, Hahn is now ready to speak
about his experiences.
Id love to be a speaker, said Hahn.
Hahn may be contacted at 1393
Bowles Ave., Apt. 207, Fenton, 63026.
His book is available at Amazon.com
and other locations.

Protect Against Influenza Season With Flu Vaccine

The best option to protect yourself
during the looming influenza season
has arrived: the flu vaccine.
The start of flu season is
unpredictable. It can arrive as early
as October, which is why receiving a
flu shot soon is important. Anyone who
is older than 65 years, has a chronic
illness or works with chronically ill
people is especially susceptible to the
flu and should be vaccinated.
This year, the American Academy
of Pediatrics is not recommending
the FluMist nasal spray because it is
not effective enough. That means all
patients, regardless of age, will need to

receive a flu shot to be vaccinated.

St.
Anthonys
primary
care
physicians can provide flu shots
to patients. The vaccine also is
available without an appointment
from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at each
of St. Anthonys four urgent care
centers:

St.
Anthonys
at
Arnold Urgent Care, 3619
Richardson Square Drive
at Richardson Road

St.
Anthonys
at
Kirkwood Urgent Care, 1001 S.
Kirkwood Road at Big Bend Road
St. Anthonys at Fenton Urgent

Care, 714 Gravois at Highway 141

St. Anthonys at Lemay
Urgent Care, 2900 Lemay
Ferry Road
St. Anthonys urgent
care centers also offer
online check-in.
St. Anthonys urgent
cares can provide the
vaccines to patients who
are 8 years and older. A parent
or guardian must be present and
sign a consent form for children who
are younger than 18 years. Pregnant
women can receive the vaccine with an
order from their doctor. The cost for a

flu shot at St. Anthonys urgent cares

is $44 and is self-pay only (insurance
and Medicare will not be billed).
In addition to being vaccinated,
other ways to protect yourself from the
flu or any other virus include:
Good hygiene, such as hand
washing;
Covering your mouth with the
bend of your arm when you cough or
sneeze;
Avoiding people who are sick,
and staying home and away from
other people when youre the one who
is sick. For more information, visit

their exemplary service their club, the local community and/or for their work and

empowering better living

To provide a continuum of care

that keeps living independently at
home possible, The Visiting Nurse
Association (VNA) of Greater St.
Louis has introduced Care At Home
private duty services.
These services offer solutions
from personal care to home care
that can be the difference for many
between
living
independently
at home, and having to find an
assisted-living facility, said Carol
Emmerich, RN and director of VNAs
Care At Home private duty services.
These services are designed to meet
both short-term and longer-term
needs of individuals from those at
home recovering and rehabilitating
to chronically-ill individuals.
The services provide personalized

one-on-one support from four to

24 hours a day, seven days
a
week. These care services will help
maintain
living
independently,
and safely, at home. They include:
medication
management
and
reminders, bathing and hygiene
assistance,
companionship
and
safety
supervision,
light
housekeeping, respite care for
dementia patients, errands and
transportation.
Each member of VNAs Care At
Home staff goes through a thorough
background check and is bonded and
insured for patient safety. Ongoing
training is also provided.
For more information, call or
email Carol Emmerich, R.N., at 314918-7171 or cemmerich@vnastl.com.
