Unit 3: Reactions Case Study

Name: _Michael Duncan____________________________

Date: ____10/10/16_________

We have discussed four types of reactions (combustion, synthesis,

decomposition, & replacement). Discuss how each types of chemical
reaction is used by a scientist or medical professional such as a
pharmacist. Make sure you find a research article on each type of
reaction!!
Cited Sources, Data & General Research Findings:
(Author, Title of Article, Website for each)
1. Combustion Source:
http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemicalreactions/a/Combustion-Reactions.htm

A combustion reaction is a major class of reaction which

usually ends with the water and carbon dioxide as a
product.
Combustion is an exothermic reaction due to it releasing
the energy.
Combustion can either be complete or incomplete.
Complete is usually clean and releases Carbon Dioxide and
water vapor.
Incomplete is releases more waste products.

2. Synthesis Source: http://study.com/academy/lesson/biochemical-reactionssynthesis-and-decomposition.html

Synthesis is the combining of reactants to form a complex

substance.
- Synthesis is a very important part of body growth and when we
need to repair damaged tissue.
- Amino acids go a synthesis reactions when they join together to

form a protein molecule.

3. Decomposition Source: http://study.com/academy/lesson/biochemicalreactions-synthesis-and-decomposition.html

Decomposition reactions are the opposite of synthesis reactions

and breaks down into smaller substances.
We see this process in the decomposition in digesting food.
Decomposition can also be sued to break molecules down while
it also being a reaction.

4. Replacement Source:
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/General_Chemistry/Types_of_chemical_reactions

Replacement has two forms either single or double

replacement.
Components either switch with one or two get switched
with another.
This replacement is very complex depending on what is
being mixed.

Discussion about combustion reactions:

-

Include data/findings from all sources, and this must be a complete

paragraph.

Overall Synthesis, Combustion, Decomposition, Single and Double replacement

reaction play a major role in the formation of just about anything around us. Each
reaction can be used for many different purposes as well was predicting the reaction
of what will be the product in a certain reaction. Whats interesting about these
reactions is that they are capable of doing extraordinary things especially in the
body. Everything eventually ties together and with that they follow the law of
conservation of mass meaning that mass is neither created or destroyed and with
reactions it is really proves that. With this, we are able to predict and create types of
medicines along with what answers as to why these types of reactions happen to
begin with.
