COURSE OVERVIEW
This course introduces students to the analysis of static systems encountered in
engineering design practice. It provides of the basic principles that govern the rigid and
deformable bodies and its application to solution of engineering problems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is aimed to develop the understanding of basic concepts of mechanics.


It imparts knowledge to convert complex engineering problems into simple system using
free body diagram and equilibrium conditions.
The course provides fundamental understanding of different forms of structural elements,
their resisting mechanism and resulting mechanical response in terms of stress and strain.
COURSE OUTCOMES

After learning the course the students will be able to:


CO-1 Solve practical problems of engineering by applying fundamental principles of
mechanics & principles of equilibrium.
CO-2 Determine the centroid and moment of inertia of a different geometrical shape.
CO-3 Calculate stability of systems using fundamental of friction and its importance
through simple applications.

Introduction& Fundamentals of Statics:

Understand forces & force system


Analyse problem related to mechanics using equilibrium conditions

Scalar and Vector Quantities, composition and resolution of forces & Force
system. Principles of statics, moments and couples & their properties,
combination of coplanar couples and forces, equilibrant, equilibrium, free
body diagrams, analytical conditions of equilibrium for coplanar force
systems & related problems.
Center of gravity and Moment of inertia

Understand of Concept of Centre of gravity and centroid.


Apply various theorems to determine surface area and volume of
solids
Synthesis most effective section for given area using axes theorems

Center of gravity of lines, plane areas, volumes and bodies, Pappus


Guildinus theorems, moment of inertia, radius of gyration of areas, parallel
& perpendicular axes theorems.

Simple stresses & strains:

Understand mechanical properties and behaviour of materials under


axial and shear load.
Apply equilibrium and consistency condition in analysing stress &
strain condition for composite section under axial and thermal load.

Elastic, plastic, brittle, ductile, homogeneous and isotropic materials;


Behaviour of material under axial and shear loads, Modulus of elasticity,
limits of elasticity and proportionality, yield limit, ultimate strength, strain
hardening,
Basic definitions of stress : Linear, shear, bending, torsion, in-plane
Strains: Linear, shear, lateral, thermal and volumetric
Poissons ratio, Bulk Modulus, modulus of rigidity, relationship between
various elastic constants
Analysis of prismatic & composite sections under axial and thermal loads.
Applications of fundamentals of statics to Statically determinate beams:

Analyse support reactions of beams subjected to external loading


Understand Relation between intensity of load, shear force and
bending moment
Evaluate internal forces along the beam and their graphical
representation

Types of loads, supports and beams; Determination of support reactions,


Bending moment and shear force, Relationship between loading, shear force
& bending moment, Bending moment and shear force diagrams for beams
subjected to concentrated loads, uniformly distributed loads, couples and
their combinations; Point of contraflexure.
Simple Lifting Machines

Understand concepts of lifting machines


Validate and apply law of Machine

Introduction to simple lifting machines, Velocity ratio, mechanical advantage,


efficiency and reversibility of machines.
Law of Machine, Application of law of machine to simple machines such as
levers, pulley and pulley system, wheel and differential axle, Single purchase
crab, simple screw jack.

9. SUGGESTED LIST OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES


1. Prepare the assembly of three or more members with in-built spring balance in each
member. Apply load at one joint and study the variation in load in all members.
2. Compare actual volume of water in a glass/jug with theorical volume determined by
Pappus Guildinus Theorem.
3. Visit any of machine laboratory of your institute, see the working of particular machine,
observe the friction, suggests the measure to reduce friction.
4. Choose any ten materials. Arrange them in the order of modulus of elasticity.
5. Draw a square grid on highly elastic material, pull in one direction. Observe increase in
length of grid lines in the direction of force and reduction in length of grid lines in the
direction perpendicular to the force. Observe change in shape of grid.
6. Take photographs of various types of beam and identify its type and support conditions.
7. Take photographs of at least two lifting mechanisms and explain its working.
