DESIGN BASIS STATEMENT (Inc. sources of info/data, assumptions made, standards, etc.)
OVERVIEW
The following calculations have been prepared to determine the required diameter of the pipework
(a) from the TSE balancing tanks to the common suction manifold,
(b) the suction pipework,
(c) the discharge pipework,
(d) and the common discharge manifold
(a) The worst case scenario for the balance tank outlets is for two adjacent tanks passing flow
into the same end of suction manifold, with the maximum 2030 flow. This will produce the
maximum flow through the twin pipes leading to the suction manifold, and will produce the
maximum flow through the suction manifold itself. It is assumed that this is a "Special
Circumstance" (see ref. 1).
(b)(c) The maximum flow into and out of each pump based on the design flow of 1,172 l/s.
(d) Under normal operation, the discharge manifold will have a maximum flow equal to the
maximum 2030 demand divided by two.
Ref. 1

Flow rates are based on the following (using 1,172 l/s per pump)
3,516 l/s
7,032 l/s
6 pumps running
3 pumps running
4,688 l/s
8,204 l/s
7 pumps running
4 pumps running
The following pipe diameters have been calculated based on a allowable velocities :

Ref. 2

Normal circumstances : 0.5m/s (min) to 2.0m/s (max) under hourly peak conditions
Special circumstances : up to 2.5 m/s
Suction velocity
: 1.8 m/s (max)
Discharge velocity
: 2.5 m/s (max)
