2. Global Water Purifier Market Outlook

According to the data of The World Water Organization (a U.S.-based non-profit association),
around 1 billion global population in 2012 did not have access to safe drinking water. With
continuous improvements in lifestyle and increasing health concerns, safe drinking water has
emerged as a requisite. A large section of the population in developed and developing countries
is consuming untreated water, thus giving rise to water-borne diseases. However, with
increasing per capita income in these developing countries coupled with the concern for health
consumption, the global water purifier market is on a rising trend. Other factors such as
increasing water contamination and increasing construction activities are also driving the water
purifier market.
Water purifiers are categorized into two types viz. point of entry systems and point of use
systems. Point of use water purification systems are further segmented into Membrane
(Reverse Osmosis & Ultra filtration), UV (Ultraviolet) and Media (Activated Carbon in particular)
based filtration. In volume terms, the market is dominated by media based water purifiers;
however, membrane purifiers segment dominated the value market due to considerably higher
selling prices. As the tap water quality continues to decline, membrane purifiers are expected to
emerge as the fastest growing segment over the next years. However, industry participants are
increasingly foraying into low-cost water treatment solutions like offline water purifiers which are
targeted at the low-income consumer groups. Offline systems, which are non-electric, are
expected to increase industry penetration in the rural markets due to their lower costs. In
addition, for yielding better output, combination systems are becoming increasingly preferred, as
they work by combining more than one technology for purifying water.
Fresh water resources are becoming increasingly scarce across the globe and the quality of
water supplied by public water utilities, especially in Asia-Pacific, is deteriorating with high

India Water Purifier Market Outlook, 2021

Page 7

amounts of dissolved solids and other impurities such as viruses and bacteria. Hence, Asia
Pacific has become the biggest market for water purifiers. China and India, with their large
population coupled with the lack of hygienic infrastructure, provide huge untapped markets.
Whereas the market for water purifiers in developed nations, such as North America and
Europe, Western Europe in particular, has been nearing maturity over the last few years.
Leading players in the water purifier market include 3M Company (U.S.), Honeywell
International Inc. (U.S.), Koninklijke Philips NV (The Netherlands), Pentair plc (U.K.), Panasonic
Corporation (Japan), Unilever PLC (U.K.), and LG Electronics Inc. (South Korea). Popular
global brands include Pureit, LG, Eureka Forbes, Kent, Amway, A O Smith, Midea Water
Appliances, Coway, Aquasana, and Culligan, among others. One of the main strategies adopted
by the water purifier companies is new product developments. Manufacturers are continuously
investing in research and development activities for innovative solutions, owing to the standards
set by governments for water treatment systems. Companies are also adopting inorganic growth
strategies such as acquisitions to cope with the increasing demand of water purifiers in key
emerging markets. These strategies have aided companies to create a large customer and
partner base in the key markets.
The adoption of water purifiers has been increasing across the globe over the last decade. In
order to capitalize upon the growth opportunities being offered by untapped markets, several
water purifier companies have entered into various developing regions over the last decade. For
instance, Unilever has expanded its presence in South America, Asia Pacific and Africa markets
over the last few years. However, high equipment cost acts as a restraint to the market. Scarcity
of clean drinking water in developing and under-developed regions provides an opportunity to
the water purifier manufacturers to grow even further. Overcoming the growing popularity of
bottled water market is a challenge faced by the point-of-use water treatment systems market.

With a customer base of Xxxx million, presence in Xxxx cities in India and 35 countries globally,
Eureka Forbes is easily the market leader in the water purifier industry in India. It has an overall
market share of Xxxx%, followed by other players like Kent (Xxxx%), HUL (Xxxx%), Tata

There are two water purifier brands of Eureka Forbes, Aquaguard and Aquasure. Aquaguard,
principally targets the lady of the house who is a young mother aged between 25 to 40 years.
As far as Aquasure is concerned, its a brand that is sold through retail and the target group is
slightly younger. Eureka Forbes seems to have fallen behind in one key emerging business
segment gravity-based water filters that can work without electricity. Dependence on direct
sales and ignoring mass retailing turned out to be a major handicap for the company which may
prove costly in the future. Although the company has increased its visibility in the digital space
by promoting online sales, retail still has not got the focus it deserves. Eureka Forbes has also
India Water Purifier Market Outlook, 2021

Page 9

just launched a new premium water purifier called Dr Aquaguard which will be pushed through
the company's own website, providing the option to buy online. The company has also brought
on board a brand ambassador for Aquaguard in Madhuri Dixit and her husband Sriram Nene.
Apart from all this, the company is also expected to expand the distribution into tier II, III and IV
markets in a bid to ramp up its presence in small towns and cities.
In 2005, Kent roped in Hema Malini, which helped it gain consumer attention. In the first five
years, Kent had found it difficult to convince customers against a giant like Aquaguard, which
ruled the market with its UV purifiers. While Kents purifier was priced at Rs Xxxx, UV purifiers
were available for Rs Xxxx, five-times less. The purifiers available in the market did not remove
dissolved impurities like arsenic, fluoride or pesticides, which Kent did and made it its USP.
Today, Kent leads in the RO category with maximum share while the company is not at all
interested in the fast declining UV market.
HULs brand Pureit is one of the most popular brands of water purifiers in India. Previously, the
company launched only gravity based filters priced at an affordable range. However, after three
years in 2011, the company forayed in the premium water purifier segment. The new product
was named Pureit Marvella RO (Reverse Osmosis). From a single SKU brand in 2008, Pureit
now has eight variants in its portfolio namely: Pureit Classic 23 litres, Pureit Classic 14 litres,
Pureit Intella 12 litres, Pureit Classic Auto-fill 23 litres, Pureit Marvella OGT, Pureit Marvella RO,
Pureit Advanced and Pureit Marvella UV. Hindustan Unilever has the support of its parent
Unilever in the water business as it has already been taking the indigenous brand to other
markets such as Mexico and Indonesia.
Tata Swach silver-based water purifiers were introduced in 2009 and offer a wide range of
products at affordable prices, starting from just Rs Xxxx. The advanced technology of Tata
Swach with its path-breaking silver nanotechnology has helped the company gained a

Page 10

considerable position. The company previously forayed into non-electric purifiers but has now
entered into electric purifiers also with products like Tata Swach Platina Silver RO and Ultima
Silver RO+UV water purifier.
Luminous brand Livpure in its second year of launch has been adjudged the upcoming
innovative Water Purifier in Best RO+UV+UF' category & awarded the Water Digest Water
Award in association with UNESCO. This has further motivated the company to initiate the Sub
Xxxx RO water purifier concept in high capacity storage segment, which will be launched in key
cities across different regions. Expansion plans are in pipeline in terms of distribution & service
centers in order to roll out Sub Rs. Xxxx RO water purifiers. Based on this successful brand
performance CLSA Capital Partners has recently invested INR Xxx million (USD$ Xxxx million)
in Luminous Water Technologies Ltd. A massive expansion plan is on the cards to increase the
network in terms of distribution and service centers with distribution reach for Livpure to be
increased by Xxxx times and the number of service centers to be increased in numbers from
Xxxx to Xxxx.
Panasonic entered in the India market with electric water purifiers in the year 2012. The
company has also recently forayed into the non-electric water purifier segment to tap rural and
urban households. It has launched three models of gravity-fed water purifiers, priced between
Rs Xxxx to Rs Xxxx. Moreover, the company has also plans to export this affordable range of
water purifiers to other developing economies. Besides the above mentioned brands of water
purifiers in the Indian market, the other good selling brands of water purifiers in the market are
Usha Brita, Permionics, Philips, Whirlpool, Bajaj Water purification system, Ion Exhange with
Zero B and Essel Nasaka water purifiers.

5.1. Market Size By Value
Revenues from the RO water purifier market in India expanded to INR Xxxx Crore in 2014,
growing at a CAGR of Xxxx % from 2009 to 2014. RO water purifiers are the costliest among all
the three technologies; however rising awareness about water-borne diseases, increasing
disposable incomes, growing urbanization and a low penetration level are some of the factors
that are pushing sales of RO water purifiers across India.

The RO water purifier industry in India is showing huge potential due to low penetration of these
water purifiers, which is at a very low level of one percent currently. Recognizing the untapped
market and the fact that consumers are increasingly being bombarded by messages
emphasizing on importance of safe drinking water, manufacturers are aggressively launching
new models to take advantage of this rising concern among the Indian population. There were
around Xxxx new launches of water purifiers in the last one year, dominated by electric purifiers
with Reverse Osmosis (RO) based technology. In different types of water purifiers, the RO
segment has the maximum market share by value due to its premium pricing and thus is mostly

demanded by people in urban India. Eureka Forbes and Kent are the dominant brands in this
segment, accounting for one-third of the total market. The RO water purifier market is expected
to reach Xxxx Crore in the year 2021 registering a CAGR of Xxxx % over next six years.

The space of outlets retailing water purifiers has grown rapidly to an estimated Xxxx in urban
India. Approximately, Xxxx% of RO are sold through the direct to home channel. Eureka
Forbes has the largest direct selling channel in water purifier market and has now also
expanded its retail presence in the country. There is also an effort from other recognized
companies such as Kent RO to open up exclusive branded outlets for their water purifiers. Cost
effective technologies which aims to reduce the cost of the product are making it possible for the
larger part of the society to afford the products such as RO water purifiers.

6. India UV Water Purifier Market

6.5. Technological Developments
6.5.1. Combination Systems
The most common types of water filters available for domestic use are reverse osmosis water
filters, ultraviolet water filters and activated carbon water filters. Another option that has become
more widely available in recent years is a combination filter system. These are often marketed
as an alternative to reverse osmosis systems and consist of multiple methods of filtration in
combination. Typically they may have 2, 3 or even 4 different filters. As an example, the water
may first be passed through a carbon block filter and then through silver impregnated ceramic
filter. The idea being that each step in the process removes different contaminants or simply
catches what may have slipped through previous stages. If the price is right, this kind of system
may be a worthwhile alternative to reverse osmosis.
Advantages:

Filtration can be comparable to reverse osmosis.

May not remove all mineral content like as RO does.

Disadvantages:

High initial cost.

Expensive and time consuming to replace multiple filter cartridges.

Often bulky due to multiple filters.

Due to growing health concerns and increasing disposable income, consumers are graduating
towards adopting other purification technologies, wherein membrane based water purifiers
segment is growing the fastest. However, for yielding better output, combination systems are
becoming increasingly preferred, as they work by combining more than one technology for
purifying water.

7. India Offline Water Purifier Market

7.1. Market Size By Value
Offline water purifiers are the non-electrical water purifiers which require no electricity to pure
the water. The potential for these gravity-based filters is huge, given the crippling power
shortage that most of India experiences. While about Xxxx% of urban areas are electrified, the
coverage of rural electrification is just Xxxx%. This is why offline water purifiers found a good
market in rural belts, and HUL and Tata Swach dominate here. The market for offline water
purifiers, which was merely INR Xxx Crore in 2009, grew to INR Xxx crore registering a robust
CAGR of Xxxx % over last five years.

For the places where the water have low TDS levels and the power cut is too high the non
electrical purifiers are the best option available in the market. New entrants in the offline
purifiers segment have increased the opportunity size for the water purifying market as it has
been able to wrap up the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) segment of the population as a target
market for the water purifier. This segment of the population was not considered as a target
market by RO and UV water purifier makers. In offline or gravity purifiers, the trend of higher

capacity purifiers has been observed over the last couple of years. Moreover, premium products
which rely only on aesthetics and do not offer any additional benefits are not preferred. The
research suggests that more than Xxxx% of the lower and lower middle income households in
urban India now have an offline water purifier.

The offline water purifier segment will account for Xxxx percent of the total market space in
2021. The growth of the offline segment will largely be attributed to low pricing and enhanced
penetration across rural population and households. Given the increasing awareness, and
largely untapped market potential, the segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of Xxxx% over
six years, reaching a market value of INR Xxx Crore by 2021. These inexpensive water
purifiers, which are sold for as little as Rs. Xxxx , will prove to be the best sellers in the market
due to their low maintenance and low cost.
