MATTER WSQ

REID GRAHAM

VOCABULARY
Matter
Liquid
Solid
Gas
Plasma
SUMMARY
Matter is everywhere. It's a substance
that takes up space. It can be present in
Gas, Liquid,Plasma or Solid.

QUESTIONS
Is oobleck a solid or liquid or can you say
it's both?
Is water the only substance that can be a
solid, liquid, or gas?
What other things are made of plasma?

Matter Examples
Hotdog- Solid
Oobleck- Solid and Liquid
Orange juice- Liquid
Dog- Solid,liquid, and gas!
Ketchup- Liquid (could have some solids)
Smoke- Gas
Cake- Solid
Star- Plasma
Chair- Solid
Fire- Plasma

In this image:
In a Solid matter is pressed together
In a Liquid matter is more free
In a gas matter is completely free

VOCABULARY
Liquids
Density

SUMMARY
Liquid is one of the states of matter. It
has an indefinite shape but has a clear
volume. To find the density of a liquid
you do mass divided by volume.

QUESTIONS
Can a liquid ever hold it's shape?

LIQUIDS
Mass of 75g and a volume of 100ml
DENSITY= 75/100= 0.75g/ml
Mass of 120g and a volume of 150
DENSITY= 120/150=0.80g/ml
Take the shape of the container they are in.
M/V= DENSITY
Grams/millimeter
Grams/CM cubed
Below is an image of the same amount of water in
different containers. Even though the shape the
water is taking up is different according to each
container, It is the same amount.

VOCABULARY
Physical
Chemical
Matter

SUMMARY
Define matter using physical and
chemical properties. Physical change
does not have any new substance.
CHemical change does have a
substance change.
QUESTIONS
Is oobleck having a chemical or physical
change?

Physical and Chemical Change

Difference is that Physical changes have no substance
change, however Chemical changes do.
Physical
Shape
Size
EXAMPLE: when we tear paper we are not
changing its substance!
Chemical
Color
Taste
EXAMPLE: when we mix baking soda and
vinegar it makes a new substance)
TYPES
Flammable
Corrosive (does it break down)
pH (how acidic something is)
explosive

VOCABULARY
Gases
Density

SUMMARY
A state of matter that doesn't have a
definite shape.

QUESTIONS
Is water vapor a gas of liquid?

GAS

All around us
No definite shape
Matter spreads apart
Volume, Temperature, And pressure share relationship

Less pressure more volume

More pressure less volume

VOCABULARY
Solute
Solvent
Solution

SUMMARY
Solvent- dissolves into another
substance
Solute- Substance dissolved into another
substance
Solution- Has a solute disolved in a
solvent
QUESTIONS
If I have liquid chocolate added to milk,
Is it a solute? Or does it have to be a
powder?

EXAMPLE:
Solute: Ice Tea powder
Solvent: Water
Solution: Ice Tea
(Solution and
MIXTURE!)

(Solvent)

(Solute)

VOCABULARY
Solids
Mater
Density
Volume
Mass
SUMMARY
Solids keep their shape and their matter
is tightly together. To find density you do
mass divided by volume.

Solids

All shapes and sizes

Any substance with a definite shape and volume
Mass is tightly pressed together
Volume: LxWxH
Density: Mass/Volume
Grams/cm3

2cm3
VOLUME= 4x4x2=32
Mass= 100

QUESTIONS
How would the density formula be
different with different types of shapes?

4cm3

100 divided by 32=3.125cm3

4cm3
DENSITY

VOCABULARY
Conservation of Mass

CONSERVATION OF MASS

SUMMARY
If you break apart a whole it won't
change it's mass.

QUESTIONS
If you lost some mass for some reason
what would you do?

When you measure substances by them self and

then add the mass together it will have the same
total if you mixed them together in one dish.
No matter was lost so It equals the same thing.
In the image below the plane is broken into pieces
however it did not change mass
