Assignment 2.2 Multi-effect Evaporator Design

Overview
In Assignment 2.2 you will design a multi-effect evaporator to concentrate a 4% NaOH solution to 35
% NaOH solution. Assignment 2.2 contributes 4 % to the final grade for this unit. The assignment
report is due by 15:00, 24th October 2016. (Late penalties apply) It must be completed individually.
The task and submission requirements for the written assignment are described below.

Assignment 2.2 Report

Submission process: Submit a hard-copy of the assignment via the assignment box located on the
ground floor of the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering building. Include a School of Mechanical
and Chemical Engineering Assignment Cover Sheet with your submission.
Page limit: 6 pages (maximum, excludes cover sheets)
Marking: The report will be given a score out of a maximum of 4 using the attached marking guide.

Problem Description
You are to design a triple-effect standard evaporator that can be used to concentrate a 4%
NaOH solution to 35% NaOH solution. Forward feed is used and boiling point elevation can
be neglected. Steam is supplied at 120 C, and the vacuum in the last effect corresponds to a
boiling temperature of 40 C. The overall coefficients, in W/m2.k, are 2950, 2670 and 1360 in
stage 1, 2 and 3 respectively. All specific heats can be taken as 4.2 KJ/Kg.K. Heat of dilution
and radiation are neglected. Condensate leave at condensing temperature. The feed entering
at 90 C with a flowrate of 42 Kg/h.
Deliverables
You are to submit a single copy of the design report. Your report must be no more than 6
single sided pages, minimum font size 11.
Your report must include the following:
1. Front page with title, authors, date. (does not count towards 6 pages)
2. Introduction: Include mainly the application of evaporators and differences of two types
of evaporators listing the advantage and disadvantage of each one of them. Comment on
what type of evaporator is a good choice for this process
3. Mass and heat balance calculations showing (for the final iteration of the design
specification):
a. Mass flowrates of all streams and Steam consumption
b. Solution boiling temperatures for each effect
c. Vapor space pressure for each effect and solution concentrations in each effect
d. Evaporator total heat transfer area required, evaporator economy and capacity
e. Total number of tubes required, mass flowrate per tube and velocity in each tube
4. Table summarising the final calculated values for (a) (e) for each iteration, including
the final iteration.
5. A simplified schematic of the triple-effect evaporator showing the stream connections,
temperatures, flowrates and pressures

Appendix A Marking Guide

The report will be marked using the following guide as an indication of the quality required for each
deliverable (actual mark may lie between indicated level).
Late penalties apply. Marks for written assignments submitted after the due date and time will be
reduced by 10% of the maximum possible mark for the assignment for each week (or part week) after
the deadline up to a maximum of 40%. Zero marks will be awarded for assignments handed in after
marked submissions have been returned to students.
