OK,supposeyouarestartingfromSquareOne(like,WhatistheformatoftheGMAT?basic)and
havejustamonthtogetyourselfinshapefortheGMAT.Thatsnotawholelotoftime,butheres
howtomakethebestofit.
Thisoutlinesupposessixdays/weekofpreparation.Itwillactuallyhelpyouintegrateevenmore
deeplyifyouhaveoneGMATfreedayaweek.Iamassumingyouhave35hoursaday,with
occasionaldays(presumablyonweekends)whenyouwillputinmoretime.Itcouldbea
comfortablerhythm,forexample,todoafewhourseachweeknight,alargersessiononSaturday,
andthentakeSundayoff.Iknowitwillbehardtosticktothisregimenifyouhaveafulltimejob
ifyouareworkingfulltime,youmayconsiderpostponingyourGMAT,ifpossible,togiveyourself
adequatetimetostudy,andfollowingatwomonthorthreemonthplan.Alternately,takingsome
vacationtimetocompletethisstudyschedulecouldbehelpful.Ifyouarebetweenjobs,ordont
havetowork,thenthatwouldbeideal.NOTE:Manyfolksfindthateachdaysassignmentstake3
5hours,althoughtimestocompletethemwillvaryfordifferentstudents.
Also,veryveryimportant:eventhoughyouaredoingmoreworkpreparingfortheGMATduring
thismonth,youmustget8+hoursofsleepeverynight.MemoryencodingtakesplaceinREM
sleep,anditsinthatlasthourofaneighthoursessionofsleepthatwegetthemostREM.Getting
anaverageof8hoursofsleepvs.anaverageof7hoursofsleepeverynightbetweennowandthe
GMATcouldbeasmuchasa50pointscoredifference.Gettingenoughsleepisveryimportant!

orbaseline(fromanyrecentpracticetests)andtheamountoftimeyoureableto
spendstudying.Onaverage,ourMagooshusersincreasetheirscoresby60points.
However,manyhaveincreasedtheirscoremuchmorethanthat!Peoplewhodont
studywithMagooshalsoareabletoincreasetheirscores,andthatvariesalot
dependingontheirstudystylesandwhattheyuse!
Ourstudyscheduleherecanhelpyoutogetanideaabouthowmuchcontentwe

Youarenotrequiredtostartsettingahardlimitforyourself,butyoumightwantto
considerourgeneralpacingguidelinesandseehowyoustackup.Thetakeasmuch
timeasyouneedattitudeisanunsustainableluxuryinGMATprep,sothefactthat
youarealreadythinkingabouttimingisexcellent.Thereisnodefinitepacingstrategy

forthetesthoweverstickingtoa2minuteruleforquantandslightlylessthan2
minuteruleforverbalcouldbethegeneralstrategyyoufollowtomakesureyoure

Todothis,youllneedtocoverthreeweeksofthescheduleforeverytwoweeksyou
havetostudy.Whilethismaysoundcomplicated,manyofourstudentshavehad
successdoingso.Ithelpsifyoufirstvisualizeyournewscheduleonpaper
Forexample,youcoulddodoubledayseveryotherweek:Foroneweek,covertwo
daysofscheduleforeachdayofyourstudying.Then,thenextweek,followthe
scheduleasnormal.Hereiswhatyourthefirstfewweeksofyourplanwouldlooklike:
YourWeek1=Weeks1and2ofthestudyplan
YourWeek2=Week3ofthestudyplan
YourWeek3=Weeks4and5ofthestudyplan
Sincetheoriginalplanonlyrequiresabout12hoursofstudyingaday,thisis

1.Theteststructureandhowitasksquestions.Makesureyouunderstanddata
sufficiencyquestions,forexample,andarereadyforsentencecorrectionexercises.
2.Allthemathbasics.Wewroteaboutthemostcommonconceptsinthemath
section,soyoucanstudystrategically.
3.Masterbasicgrammaticalrules.Subjectverbagreement,pronounusage,
modifierplacement,andeconomyofwordsareallkeycomponentsofthesentence
correctionquestions.
20daysisnotenoughtimetoreallyuseafullstudyplan,butifyouareabletofocus

themathlessonvideosinsequence,fromtoptobottom.Somedays,youwilldoall
videosfromasinglemodule.Otherdays,youwillfinishonemoduleandstartanother.
Doyouknowhowatankmovesacrosslandscape,crushingeverythinginitspath
trees,fences,structures,etc.Itjustkeepsmovingforward.Thatspreciselyhowyou

the30s)andcoveredaround90%ofthestudymaterials.IwanttotaketheGMATinthe
next68weeksandmygoalistogetQ40andV40.
Itriedtoanalyzemyweakpoints,butcantdetectaspecialweaknesse.g.Algebraor
VerbForms.So,Ithinkitwouldbeagoodideatorepeatroughlyallthestufffromthe

ifyouwereabeginnerinthattopic,toseewhetheryoucanlearnorappreciate

isverydangeroustogetintheplaceissaying,Iamdonewithsuchandsuchan
area.Theexcellentstudentisneverdonewithanything,isalwayspushingto
understandmoredeeply,morethoroughly.Ofcourse,bringcomparativelymorefocus
toyourweakareas,butthemostdisastrousthingyoucoulddoistakesomeareasof
thetestforgranted.Thisispreciselywhy,onaverage,retakesoftheGMATshowvery
littleimprovementfolkshaveatendencytofocusexclusivelyonperceivedweak
areas,andalmostcompletelyignoreperceivedareasofstrengths,andthisinvariable
comesbacktobitethem.Themediocrestudentscanshorizontallyacrossthetopics,

hardertodo,becauseitforcesyoutolearnmuchmoredeeplythanyouwouldsimply

IdontbelievetheQ&Vscoresareinherentlydifferentintheirimpactontheoverall

studyingforaboutamonthnowandgainedanoverviewofeverysection.Mytargetscore
is600+.Ihavedoneabout100practicequestionsofthePSandDSpartoftheOG13
lookinguppartsIdidnotunderstandondifferentpageslikebeathegmat.comandalso
thegreatvideoshere.Iwouldliketofollowyour1monthstudyplan.Doyouthinkyou

BecauseyouhavealreadydonesomeOGquestion,becauseyouhavealreadywatched
someMagooshvideos,andbecauseyouwillhavesomefreetime,Ithinkthisis
doable.SinceonlyyouknowexactlyhowmanyMagooshvideosyouhavealreadyseen,
Iwillleaveituptoyoutodeterminehowmanyvideosyoushouldwatchtobeonpace
toendafewdaysbefore5/20dependingonhowmanyyouhavealreadyseen,your
videolessonwatchingpacemightbefasterorslowerthanthepaceofthisplan,but
thepaceofthisplanisreasonablybrisk.Similarly,youcanspreadtheremainingOG
questionsevenlyovertheremainingdays.
IfyouwanttoaddMGMATtheyareexcellentbooks,buttogetthroughthewhole
set,thatwouldinvolvereadingclosetothreefullvolumeseachweekthatwouldbe
23additionalhourseachday.Ifyoucanaffordthat,thatwouldgiveyouexcellent
preparation,butthatsatonofextratime.If,forexample,youpickjustoneortwo
MGMATvolumesthatyoususpectwouldbeparticularpertinenttoyourstudies,then
youcouldstretchthatout,soyouweredoingonly1520minutesextraeachday,
somethingmuchmoremanageable.

So,myfriend,hereswhatIllsay.Usethisonemonthplan.Thewaythebrainworks,
itcanbehardtointegratealotofinformationinanintensedose.Thewayyouwill
getthemostoutofthismonthistovaryyourfocusatmuchaspossibleeachday.For
example,onethingIwouldrecommendiswatchingalltheMagooshLessonvideos
twice,butitwilldoverylittleforyoutowatchavideoandthenwatchitagainright
awayinstead,Iwillrecommend,doublethepaceofwatchingvideos,soyoucansee
everyvideobyaboutDay15,andthenonceyouaredonewiththewholesequence,
startfromthetopandwatcheachoneagaininthesecondhalfofthemonth.That
way,thereshouldbeabouttwoweeksbetweentheviewingofanysinglevideo,and
thatkindofspacedoutrepeatedexposureiswhatbuildsconnectionsinthebrain.
Diligentlywatchthevideoexplanationtoeveryquestionyoudo,scouringitforany
chancetodeepenyourunderstanding.Takenothingforgranted.Iwouldalso

recommend:readthrougheverysinglearticleonthisblog:theresalotherethatcan
helpyou,andmanytimesthesameconceptisexplaineddifferentlyherethaninthe
Lessonvideo:hearingittwodifferentwayswillhelpyou.Ialsorecommendgetthe
entireMGMATsetandreadthroughthemduringthemonth.Again,varywhatyou
aredoingonanyparticulardaythatyouwatch,say,MagooshLessonsonmath,
thenreadblogsorMGMATbooksonverbalstuff.Youshouldhaveanequaldosesof
math&verbaleveryday,soyougetusedtoswitchingbackandforth.
Finally,itwillveryimportanttomaintainexcellenthealththroughthismonth.Get8+
hoursofsleepeverysinglenight,becauseREMsleepisessentialforbuildingmemory.
Eatwell:besparingwithcaffeine,andavoidhighfructosecornsyrup,which
diminishestheabilitytofocus.Itwillalsobeimportanttotakeshortstrategicbreaks
eachday,perhapsatriptothegymorsomeothersuchexercise:supportingblood
flowandoxygentothewholebodywillincreaseoxygentothebrainandwillsupport
greaterattention&learning.

sequenceofmathlessonvideosisdesignedtobewatchedinthatspecificorder.Do
NOTchooseyourvideosbasedonthequestionsthatday.Itsabsolutelytrue
especiallyintheearlystages,youwillcomeacrosscontentinquestionsthatyou
haventseenyetinvideolessons.Thatsfine.Thatsthepoint.Firstofall,wrestling
withthatcontentyourselfishard,butitprimesyourmindforlearningmoredeeply
whenyoueventuallygettothoselessons.Furthermore,itsverygoodtrainingto
wrestlewithquestionsonwhichyoudontnecessarilyknowtheanswernomatter

numbersentirely,andreferonlytosections,sotheplanwouldbecompliant
withalleditionsoftheOG.Doesthismakesense?

(1)Doesitmatterwhetheritsthe12th,13th,or14theditionoftheOG?
(2)Also,Ihaveheardofpeoplegetting2or3bookstogettheirGMATdonePrinceton,
Kaplan,etc.Isitrequired/essentialtogetaviewofthestylesmentionedinthese
differentpublications?ItjustmakestheGMATprocessmoreconfusingandover
whelming.

Vick:(1)AsfortheOG,ifyouhaveanOGalready,whicheveroneyouhaveis
fineaslongasitsrecent(OG>10).IfyouaresettingouttobuyanOG,youmightas
wellbuythemostrecentoneinparticular,theOG13givesyouaccesstoGMACs
50IRquestionsonline.BTW,IdontthinkanOG14hasevenbeenannouncedatthis
point.(2)IfyoustickwithMGMATbooksandtheMagooshwebsite,youwillhaveall
thetoolsyouneedtosucceed.Iagreeitsbesttokeepitsimple.
