INDUSTRIAL VISIT
REPORT

PROF. ISMAIL

INTRODUCTION
On 21/11/2015, about 5 student of group EMD7M5A went for an industrial visit
regarding safety and health in industrial practice. This industrial visit is compulsory for
Occupational Safety and Health course subject. The objective of this site visit is to expose the
student with the Occupational Safety and Health practices in industry and also to enhance
students understanding on the theories and knowledge gained in the class and relate what they
have learnt to practical world. The industrial visit was done at Nusapetro Sdn. Bhd located at
Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur. Nusapetro Sdn Bhd is a manufacturing company for
fabricating and manufacturing chemical injection skid for the use in off shore oil rig.
During the industrial visit, students were put under the supervision of Mr. Jamil bin
Hj. Muhammad Ramli the safety officer of the company. At first, students were taken by Mr.
Jamil to the briefing room to brief about the company and also the safety procedure to be
taken before entering the site. After that, students were taken to the area of the fabrication
process. The main work in the fabrication area are welding where they are a lot of hazard in it.
According to Mr. Jamil, the fabrication yard is going to move to other industrial area.
Therefore, the yard is a little bit unorganized causing occurrence of more hazard.
At that time of the visit, the fabrication works were almost finish. Thus, there was nothing
much to observe. However, we were given the opportunities to see how the welding for oil
and gas equipment were done. We learnt the importance of a tidy and organized working
environment, as well as safety equipment.
The site consisted of many possible safety and health threats or potential threats where
fatal accidents can occur. Upon arrival, we were all inspected and the management had to
ensure that we were all properly attired with safety gear and covered shoes before we were
allowed to go in. It was a standard protocol at all site. Safety is after all the most important
aspect in any engineering area.
This Industrial visit experience provided us with a more in-depth on Occupational in
Safety and Health. We were able to question, understand and absorb the logic behind
the safety and health procedure, techniques, and methodology theory learnt in class.

DISCUSSION/ SUGGESTION/ IMPROVEMENT
NusapetroSdn. Bhd. which has grown into one of Malaysia's leading supplier for oil
and gas industry had applied the Health and Safety in the workplace. They had expanding
aggressively in Malaysia and throughout Asia Pacific region and have achieved ISO 9001:
2008 and OHSAS 18001:2001 compliance in 2008.Occupational safety and health (OSH) also
commonly referred to as occupational health and safety (OHS) or workplace health and safety
(WHS) is an area concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or
employment. The goals of occupational safety and health programs include to foster a safe
and healthy work environment.OSH may also protect coworkers, family members, employers,
customers, and many others who might be affected by the workplace environment. In the
United States the term occupational health and safety is referred to as occupational health and
occupational and nonoccupationalsafety and includes safety for activities outside work. In
commonlawjurisdictions, employers have a common law duty to take reasonable care for the
safetyof their employees. Statute law may build upon this to impose additional general duties,
introducespecific duties and create government bodies with powers to regulate workplace
safety issues: details ofthis will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Safety and health procedure that was applied at Nusapetro

The implementation of occupational and health at Nusapetro is all of worker need to
use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as facesheild, boot, ear muff, safety glassses,
safety gogles and so on. PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health ndd safety
risk at works. All personal protective equiment is very important to worker because it will
minise some hazard that deal with worker.PPE is very important because it encourage people
to work safely and responsibly.

The PPE that use during welding and grinding is facesheild, safety jaket, safety boot, safety
glove. Facesheild was used to cover face from the spark and cover eye from direct contact
with the light that produce during welding process. Next, safety jacket and safety glove was
used for user in order to avoid direct contact with the spark and the unwanted dust. Lastly is
safety boot was used to avoid from spark, falling object and so on.
Next implemention of occupation and health is apply sign on the wall so that worker
always alert to the hazard at the workplace. Safety sign are crucil in any environment. The
primary importance of displaying safety signs is to prevent injury and ensure staff and visitors
are well aware of the possible dangers and hazard ahead in certain situations or environment.
Without signs, many employee would lack the necessary direction in times of crisis, and
employers might find themselves in significant legal dificullties if any acciddents were to a
rise as a result. By ensuring the workplace is sufficiently well signed, it will hepl and protec
the worker andd visitors against the possible danger that may be unnoticed.

Suggestion and improvement

As we can see, Nusapetro have been implementing quite a good
safety measures. This is reflected through their accident-free record. To
make sure that this record can hold on, there are five guidelines that
maybe can help them.
First, Delegate Responsibility. Workers are more likely to respond
when they are the one setting the protocol. Management board can assign
certain worker for floor safety and make the safe practices a reviewable
criterion. Through this method, the workers in charge will be more
responsible towards safety and they also will help to encourage their coworkers to do the same. The reviewable safety criteria will make the
workers feel that their voice is being heard and appreciated.
Unconsciously, they will follow all the safety measure willingly.
Next, Recognize best practices. Preaching safety wont prevent
injuries. Nor will a handbook. Experienced floor workers know better than
anyone how to keep safe. Seek their input and ideas and then publish the
most interesting as a series of best practices for floor safety. Workers
already have an interest in steering clear of injuries; give them a hand in
setting policy for doing exactly that.
Create peer rewards. Safety is a team sport on the factory floor, if
only because errors or malfunctions are rarely confined to a single injury.
Give workers a pool of nonmonetary perks to leaders who consistently
demonstrate safe practices. Trophies, plaques, T-shirts, or even an extra
day off here and there. Make it public so that others on the floor have
something to aspire to. This will light the spirit to compete between each
other to pursue a better safety practices.
A part from that, Foster outside competition. What is your plants
safety record compared with local peers and competitors? Share nonsensitive information and get workers involved. Compete not just on the
basis of production and output but also safety. This way, the workers will
unite to achieve better performance. They will always remind each other
about a correct safety practices.
Lastly, Demand executive participation. No hiding. Everyone,
including the CEO, works the floor at least a few hours a month in order to
get a better sense of where the company stands on safe practices. Are
there areas to improve? Management needs to invest with eyes wide open.
Besides the top management can experience the safety measures first
5hand, the workers can see that their bosses actually concern and really
want to create a safe workspace for the benefit of all.
5

Theres no point in risking an incident when a few simple steps is all

thats required to create a safer floor. Involve workers, implement their
best practices, recognize improvement, introduce competition, and get
everyone involved. If Nusapetro able to applying all this method,
unquestionably their clean record can withstood for a long time.

CONCLUSION
This project requires student to conduct a visit to the industry to gain knowledge about
the application of occupational safety and health. Nusapetro Sdn Bhd is a manufacturing
company for fabricating and manufacturing chemical injection skid for the use in off shore oil
rig. From the industrial visit that we have conducted, we have managed to get the information
we need about the Occupational Safety and Health culture in a manufacturing company
especially the one which involves directly with the oil and gas industry. We have been able to
gain knowledge of how manufacturing company apply the procedure when dealing with the
safety and health of the workers and employees. At Nusapetro, there are many engineering
processes that can be harmful to human. They deals with the heavy machinery, welding
processes, heavy lifting and others. They even have confined space for welding which the
territory cannot be entered unless by people who has the authorized to do so. We also
managed to see the way how the company urges the importance of safety and health at their
company. At Nusapetro, there are many hazard signs and procedure notice which is installed
at their wall so that the workers will always be alert to hazard. As a conclusion, the industrial
visit has been informative to all of student as we can see the way occupational safety and
health was applied in the real industry.
