positionissupportedbyanNIMHfundedfiveyearstudyconductedinpartnershipwith
investigatorsattheCarolinaPopulationCenteroftheUniversityofNorthCarolina,The
UniversityofCaliforniaatSanFrancisco,UCBerkeley,andtheMRC/WitsRuralPublicHealth
andHealthTransitionsResearchUnit,UniversityoftheWitwatersrand,Johannesburg,South
Africa.

Position
Summary

Thispositionwillhelpdesignandconductsocialepidemiologicalresearchwithinateamof
epidemiologists,physicians,demographers,andsocialscientistsrecentlyfundedtoexplorethe
socialdeterminantsonHIVincidenceamongyoungwomeninthemostseverelyaffected
regionofsubSaharanAfrica.TheprojectaimstoelucidatethecausesofHIVriskand
protectionforyoungwomenastheytransitionfromadolescenceintoadulthood,toquantify
mechanisms/pathwaysofeffect,andtoidentifyoptimalcombinationsofinterventionsthatcan
beusedtoeffectivelyreducenewHIVinfections.Thiswillbeaccomplishedutilizingdatafrom
anongoingcohortof2,400adolescentSouthAfricangirlsfollowedintoearlyadulthood,linked
withtworichdatasetsthatcontainpopulationdemographicandsocialcontextualdataontheir
householdsandvillagesofresidence,tounderstandmechanismsofrisk.
Principalresponsibilitiesincludeperformingdatamanagementandanalysisandmanuscript
developmentandwriting.Analysisandmanuscriptdevelopmentwillbeconductedunderthe
directionofaseniorinvestigativeteam,withstrongemphasisplacedoncareerdevelopment,
interdisciplinaryresearch,andtranslationofscienceintoprogrammingandpolicy.Theinitial
appointmentisforoneyear,withrenewalexpectedforasecondyearifprogressissatisfactory,
withtheexpectationofgrantsubmissionsbytheincumbentafteronetotwoyears.Thefellow
willbebasedattheCarolinaPopulationCenteratUNC,ChapelHill,butmayalsotravelto
Agincourt,SouthAfrica,asneeded.

Educational ThispositionrequiresaPhDinepidemiology,biostatistics,orarelatedscientificdisciplinethat
Requirements requiresstrongquantitativeskills.
Requiredqualificationsinclude(1)astrongpublicationrecord(2)strongskillsindata
managementofcomplexdatasets,includinglongitudinal,nesteddatasets(3)strongskills
statisticalprogrammingandanalysisusingSAS,R,and/orStata,includingtheabilityto
generateunivariateandbivariatedescriptivestatistics,experiencewithfittingcrosssectional
Qualifications linear,logistic,andsurvivalanalysisregressionmodels,andexposuretolongitudinalanalysis

likelihoodestimation),mediationanalysis,causalinferencemethods,andpriorexperiencein
HIVresearch.Researchexperienceinlowresourcesettingsishighlyvalued.
