Minimise Me Unit Outline

Unit Objectives (UO): (Western Australian School Curriculum Framework and ACARA)
Overall this Unit aims to educate Year 7 students on the topic of obesity. Through delivering this unit at a young age it aims to be a foundation for students as they grow and
go through developmental changes. Topics that are aimed to be covered include, the basics of childhood obesity, the causes, risk factors, protective factors, how decision
making plays a part, and interventions and strategies that can be used to help minimise childhood obesity. Through out this unit it is desired that students create and form
opinions on the topic and challenge them though the various topics. Activities in this unit are mostly group orientated and aim to help i cooperation between students and
improve other areas such as social skills, collaborative skills and allow students to form support bases and help them to realise they can talk to other students about others
issues and swell as obesity. Links to the curriculum can be found below with the descriptors that suite the desired outcomes for this unit.
SCSA
Strategies to make informed choices to promote health, safety and wellbeing, such as (ACPPS073):
researching nutritious meals that offer value for money
examining accessible physical activity options in the community
researching a variety of snack and lunch options, and evaluating nutritional value, value for money and sustainability impacts to create a weekly menu plan
researching opportunities in the local community to participate in regular physical activity and examining how accessible these opportunities are for students
Preventive health practices for young people to avoid and manage risk, such as (ACPPS077):
-

adoption of the Australian Dietary Guidelines for healthy food choices and serving sizes
investigating preventive health practices relevant to young people, and designing and implementing health promotion activities targeting these practices
investigating food-serving recommendations from The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and producing a guide to help students make healthy choices when
buying food from the school canteen

Ways in which physical activities improve elements of health and fitness (ACPMP083):
lowered heart rate
lowered cholesterol
improved body composition by lowering percentage of body fat
