Introduction
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a globally emerging phenomenon that may
greatly influence the evolution of the construction industry (John Rogers, 2015). It
represents a new paradigm within the construction industry, one that encourages
integration of the roles of all stakeholders on a project allowing the architects, engineers
and constructors to visualize what is to be built in a simulated environment and to
identify potential design, construction or operational issues (Akerele, 2016).
Kherun Nita binti Ali et al. (2013) had mention that the awareness of Nonregistered QS
towards BIM in the feasibility stage is the highest compared to the Registered Graduate
QS and the Registered QS. Then, it state that the awareness towards BIM in the
feasibility stage by female gender is the highest compared to the male, with an average
of sixty percent to seventy five percent awareness. Both female and male gender had
the same percentage of awareness in preestimation.
Other than quantity surveyor, project managers, other consultant and engineers,
Architects in design firms are one of most active participants of BIM adoption (McGrawHill Construction, 2008; Gu and London, 2010). The key factors are important factors for
adoption of BIM among quantity surveyors in construction industry. One of the factors
that will encourage the adoption of BIM is by increased awareness of the benefits of
using BIM. Akerele et al. (2016) state that private clients not mandating the use of BIM
due the generally low level of awareness on its application and lack of knowledge on
use, the general conception that the current technology in use is enough and the lack of
inter-agency collaboration for the adoption and use of BIM as the factors militating

use of BIM. Abuzar Aftab Shaikh et al. (2016) state that the awareness of BIM is high
among the professors and students but low among the construction professionals. This
is due to exposure of BIM in construction industry and interest among the professionals
are differ from the students and professor, which their interest are focusing on innovate,
create ideas and improvise the system to increase the productivity in construction
industry.

Problem Statement

1.

Quantity Surveyor lack of awareness on BIM.

For some reason, quantity surveyors are still lagging behind in BIM application.
Compared to other professionals, they adoption towards BIM are more advance
compare to quantity surveyors. Low adoption among quantity surveyors is due to lack of
awareness of the potential of BIM application toward their profession. Quantity
Surveyors did not fully optimize the usage of BIM to perform their practices. Quantity
surveyor might use completely at certain phase of work, but not in every stage.
One of the reason is they did not invest in BIM training, due to expensive fees. Not all
quantity surveying firm are interested in modern technology, somehow they prefer
traditional method compared on high tech method. It might be a waste for them to invest
in something that they not interested in.

2.

Quantity Surveyor aware on BIM but did not adopt in construction industry
For quantity surveyor, the biggest barriers to the take-up of BIM are lack of client
demand, lack of training, lack of application interfaces and lack of standards. Even
though quantity surveyor aware on this subject, but due to the other factors there will be
no adoption of BIM in construction industry. Other than that, the reason is they are not
trained and guide by professionals due to lack of well trained personnel in the
construction industry. From there, there will be lost on interest in adopting BIM in
construction industry. Then, It also appears that BIM is not readily adopted by QS firms
due to the incompleteness of the model.

3. Barriers towards quantity surveyor adoption of BIM
Lack of knowledge will become a barriers for quantity surveyors in adoption of BIM.
Some of the consultants in the construction industry are reluctant to share their model to

the quantity surveyors. Also, the need for cultural change are needed if not the
resistance by older QS to new technology will become a barrier towards the adoption of
BIM.
