founded in Vienna. Since the very
beginning the company holds a
unique and strong position within the international manufacturing industry of musical
strings. In the world of string players and guitarists it is considered best practice to equip
instruments with strings from ThomastikInfeld.
The combination of longstanding craftsmanship, high tech engineering, the passion for
detail, our love for music and the drive for
innovation is the secret of our sustainable success. Thomastik-Infeld produces a huge variety
of strings for bowed and fretted instruments in

the very heart of Vienna, the City of Music,
bringing the most beautiful sounds into the
world.
Music is a universal language it is able to
cross borders, overcome linguistic barriers and

Amongst string players and guitarists it is considered best

practice to equip instruments with handmade strings from
Thomastik-Infeld. The manufacturing of strings in the very
heart of Vienna the City of Music has a long tradition.
History
History
Early Years | 19191950
Post War | 19501979
homastik-Infeld looks back at a long

history full of change. Even before the
beginning of the First World War,
Dr. Franz Thomastik luthier and Doctor of
Philosophy tested various raw materials for
their potential in the developement of cutting edge strings. Starting in 1919 he did his
material research together with Otto Infeld,
an engineer. The cooperation of the company
founders first occurred as a joint effort of two
single enterprises.
In 1921 the foundation of the joint company Dr. Franz Thomastik and employees
followed. Eventually, Dr. Thomastik chose steel
as the material for the development of new
strings. The advantages of this material lay in
the resulting tuning stability, the imperviousness to climatic changes, as well as in its
significantly longer lifespan. In 1926 strings of
respectable quality were developed for all string
instruments, from the violin to the c ontrabass.
At the beginning of the 1930s 50 % of the produced strings were exported, with Great Britain
and the United States of America being the
most important markets.
The outbreak of the Second World War
and the destruction of the company through
numerous allied bombardments disrupted the
business. After the end of the war and the
reconstruction, p
roduction was resumed in
June 1946. In 1950 production levels reached
those of the prewar period again.
he time after 1950 was marked by

growth and constant striving for the
highest quality. This mindset was the
foundation of the upcoming success of
Thomastik-Infeld.
When Dr. Thomastik passed away in
1951, Otto Infeld took over the company. After
his death in 1965 Margaretha Infeld and her
son Peter continued his work and turned
Thomastik-Infeld into the leading supplier of
strings worldwide.
From the very beginning the red violin

body with the curved initial T was
the logo of the company (1). It was
the distinctive sign on the packaging
(2) and all other printed materials, e.g.
the price-list from 1936 (3). The illus1
tration below (4) shows a detail of the
original patent of the flat wire winding from 1914. The
adjacent patent document (5) from 1933 proves the
successful granting of a patent.
The increasing internationalisation

of the company led to a modernisation of its brand appearance. The
companys logo with the red violin
body (1) as well as the printed materials (2) were adapted to the style of

the time. The characteristic packaging of the Dominant (3) quickly became the brand
label of Thomastik-Infeld. It was important for several
generations of musicians. These sketches and photos
(4, 5) remind of one of the first international trade-fair
appearances in Frankfurt in 1969.

argaretha Infeld played an active

role in the company until 1994
when her son Peter Infeld took over
the sole management of the company. He led it
according to family traditions until his unexpected death in April 2009.
p to the present day an innovation has

significantly contributed to the companys success: the string with
synthetic core and flat wire winding. This particular string the Dominant string is the
most-played violin string worldwide. Itzhak
Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman had already
adopted this string innovation when they were
unknown violin students. Later both became
soloists of world rank.
urrently, Thomastik-Infeld and its 200

employees produce more than 3,000
various strings for bowed and fretted
instruments in the very heart of Vienna, the
City of Music. 97 % of the produced units are
exported to more than 90 countries all over
the world each year. A strong international
focus and the steady expansion of business
relations remain an essential component of
the successful strategy of Thomastik-Infeld.
The upcoming period of innovation

has been initiated by fundamental
research (2) and new product developments (1).
New technologies brought new products. On the occasion of the brand

relaunch 2004 the logo (1), packaging and printed materials (2) were

redesigned. In celebration of the
90th anniversary of Thomastik-Infeld a document was
issued by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (3).
The photograph shown below (4) documents one of
the numerous appearances on various international
music trade fairs (Frankfurt 2011).

my career as a soloist and chamber musician since my
youth. I cannot imagine doing justice to a Shostakovich
concerto, a Bartok quartet or a Bach suite without
them. They give me everything I need as a cellist:

in duo repertoire, to stand up against the power of
todays 9-foot concert grand pianos. They are perfectly

a problem with the E string
How to order
special strings

ome violins can react sensitively to different thicknesses of E strings. For an

optimal response after putting on a set,
all strings should be cleaned with a dry cloth
before playing. A microfibre cloth is recommended.
Slightly warm up and tune up your strings by
sliding your thumb up and down the string
about five times applying pressure to enhance
stability and put your instrument on stand by
for a concert performance.
Repeat this three times to achieve optimal
results.
Bowing near the bridge with considerable pressure (bow up and down about five times each)
will make the strings ready for concert use in
the shortest time possible to be exact in as
little as two to three hours.
However dont forget that these preparatory
measures can shorten the sonic life span of the
strings and should only be used if circumstances
only give you a short time to prepare your
strings.
The strings put on first should be the ones
whose tonal characteristics (mellow or bril-
liant) the player considers more important for

his or her instrument. On particular instruments strings may respond differently than
one would expect. For example, depending on
the instrument the brilliant G string (Infeld
Blue) can produce a brilliant or dark sound,
since sometimes the frequency characteristics
of the violin itself does not match those of the
string.
If so, simply change a string within the Infeld
Violin system. This easily restores the desired
tonal balance. If one or more strings turn out
to not match the character of your instrument
perfectly, follow these simple steps:
When changing strings start with the E string.
The E string provided with the set represents a
good choice for the majority of instruments.
(Incidentally, the E strings ball end can be
removed by finger pressure, so that the string
can be used with a ball end or loop end as
required). E strings with different diameters
are available per request as CUSTOM ORDER
STRINGS. Now change the G string, then the D
string and finally the A string.

What to avoid when

re-stringing an instrument
1. The tailpiece
Ensuring the correct distance between tailpiece and bridge is very important for the
purity of the tone as well as the proper fitting
of the string on the instrument.
We strongly recommend these measurements
for full size instruments:
s Violin 5.7 cm or 2 inches
s Viola 6.8 cm or 2 inches
s Cello 12.0 cm or 4 inches
s Double bass 21.0 cm or 8 inches
2. The height of the string above the
fingerboard
When using steel and nylon strings, the distance between string and fingerboard is less
than with gut strings. The following numbers
are for steel strings and can be adapted for
nylon strings by adding a little to these values.
Having the strings closer to the fingerboard
eases the work of the left hand and extends the

life of the string. The measurements are taken
exactly above the bridge end of the fingerboard.
s Violin E | 2.5 mm G IV 4.0 mm
s Viola A | 5.0 mm C IV 4.5 mm
s Cello A | 4.5 mm C IV 6.5 mm
s Double bass I: 9.5 mm E1 IV 10.5 mm
3. When to change strings
A strings component material, especially its
core will eventually become fatigued. The
richness of higher partials and the fullness
of tone will degrade. First and foremost this
happens with intensive amounts of playing.
To avoid sound quality loss we advise
changing strings at appropriate intervals.
Changing single strings instead of the whole
set at once, i.e. mixing old and new strings
will jeopardize the entire tonal balance of the
instrument.
1. If you put strings on an instrument smaller

than the one the strings are designed for, there
will be a considerable loss of tension and sound
quality. Apart from this, the thicker playing
length of the string will end up being wound
around the tuning peg, which especially with
thicker strings will result in damage to the
core, loss of tonal quality and strings breaking.
This is one of the most common mistakes.

2. If you put strings on an instrument larger
than the one the strings are designed for, e.g.
on a large viola, it will have the same effect as
tuning the string too high, or tuning from the

highest to lowest string instead of the other

way around. Doing this even once can severely
fatigue the string or break it.
3. Sharp edges on the bridge, the nut or the
tailpiece will damage the string and can lead
to breakage. This can also happen if the channels in the nut are too narrow. Channels have
to be of sufficient width and prepared with a
little graphite from a soft pencil. Another mistake to avoid when re-stringing the instrument
is winding the string improperly around the
tuning peg. The correct number of windings is
between four and five, without any bending of
the string between nut and tuning peg and
without jamming it against the peg box.
