did the disciples. The blood of these martyrs is the seed for the
Church. He recorded the many miracles of healing and delivering of
people from devils during his time.

THE EARLY CHURCH FATHERS

The Holy Spirit guided the Church in difficult times to spread
the good news. A peek into the first 3 Century Missionaries.
There was severe persecution of Christians in the first three
centuries of the Roman Empire. In the midst of that, there were
teachers who spread the Gospel, did miracles and some of them
died as martyrs like the great Apostles. We owe a lot to these early
Fathers too who keep the light high.
1. JUSTIN (100-160 AD): Justin studied all the great philosophies of his
days. In 150 AD, he founded a disciple-training school in Rome and
documented all the signs and wonders of his time. He was
persecuted and martyred in Rome.
2. MONTANUS (120-175 AD): He was a new convert and had a
Pentecostal experience at his baptism in water. He began
prophesying and declared that the Holy Spirit promised in the Gospel
of John was using him as His mouthpiece. His movement known as
Montanism was a puritanical, charismatic, apocalyptic movement
and was called the new age of the Holy Spirits power. His movement
was banned and continued as an underground movement.
3. IRENAEUS (140-230 AD): He was the Bishop of Lyons. He prophesied
that the Antichrist will be a Jew and of the tribe of Dan. He predicted
the coming of the Spirit, something powerful, something evident as a
fundamental element of the Church life.
4. TERTULLIAN (160-220 AD): He was brought up in the cultural
paganism but became a Christian and joined the Montanist group.
He was a great writer. He concluded his writings: Christ commanded
the disciples to go and teach all nations immediately, therefore, so

5. NOVATION (210-280 AD): He was the anti-Pope of the puritan party in

Church in Rome. He gave the western Church its first full length
testament of Trinity. Of the Holy Spirit, he writes, This is He who
places prophets in the Church, instructs teachers, directs tongues,
gives powers and healings, does wonderful works, offers
discrimination of spirits, affords powers of government, suggests
counsels and orders. All other gifts of the Holy Spirit are also of
charismata, and thus make the Lords Church everywhere, and in all,
perfected and completed.
6. HILARION (291-371 AD): He was an ascetic, educated and converted
at Alexandria. He had been in the desert for twenty years and was
widely known throughout the cities of Palestine. His miracles,
healings and expulsions of demons was recorded by Jerome, an
early father, in the book Life of Saint Hilarion. There were many
monks with Hilarion. Once a blind woman cried and asked for mercy.
Hilarion said, If what you lost on physicians, you had given to the
poor, Jesus the true physician would have healed
you. The woman cried again and asked for
pardon. Following the example of Jesus, Hilarion
rubbed and spitted upon her eyes, and she was
immediately healed. Jerome concludes about
Hilarions miracles: There would not be a time if I
wanted to tell you all the signs and wonders
performed by Hilarion.
7. AMBROSE (339-397 AD): He was declared the Bishop of Milan by his
followers. When ordained as Bishop, his first act was to distribute all
his wealth among the poor. He taught that Christs Second Coming
will be preceded by Romes destruction and Antichrists appearance.

THINK!

8. AUGUSTINE (354-430 AD): He was the most famous of all the early
Church Fathers. He served as the Bishop of Hippo and he recorded
in his book, The City of God of all the miracles that were occurring
in his days and ended his narrative of miracles by telling his readers
that there are too many miracles to list. He opposed the idea that the
miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit ended with the Apostolic age.

MAN-MADE diseases
PRIDE: Proverbs 29:23 Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain
honour.
Hear and give ear, be not proud, for the Lord has spoken,
When insolence/ haughtiness creeps in, fellowship with God is broken;
Pride corrupts us, hinders spiritual food and brings our downfall,
We need to stand tall and rise above its many pitfalls!

The Holy Spirit continued to help and guide the Church in difficult
times to spread the good news and minister to the needs of the
Christian community. Even now, thousands of missionaries work
under very difficult circumstances in remote parts of our country as
per Gods great plan to spread the Gospel. We owe them a lot as we
owe to the great Apostles and the early Church Fathers.

JEALOUSY: Psalm 37:1 Do not fret because of evil doers.

Jealousy is ugly, hateful, bitter hurts people around us,
Have hardened hearts, never appreciate, remove peacefulness;
Jealous of others prosperity, riches, achievement, career,
Should be content with what we have, to James 3:16, adhere!

VANITY: Psalm 94:11 The Lord knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
Vanity of Vanities, says the Preacher : All is Vanity We should love & serve God instead of all this insanity,
Self-love, self-worship, showing off, vain pursuit, arrogance;
Boasting of riches, empty pleasures, outward appearance!
CRITICISM: Matthew 7:1-5 Judge not that ye be not judged.
People criticize, feel great, use words that are hurtful,
Steal joy, find faults, complain, make us feel miserable;
Let us use helpful words; and encourage those who hear,
Lets not judge others but await Gods Judgement that can be severe!

When a Gossip starts, the tongue rolls on and on,

THANKING GOD FOR EVERYTHING

LYING: Genesis 3:4 You will not certainly die, the serpent said to the woman
The first lie in the world was a lie told to Eve,
Satan, the Father of lies makes us believe;
Jesus called Himself, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life,
Lying is a cornerstone of evil, resist it as it only brings strife!

SECRET OF HAPPINESS
Whats the Secret? This incident
puts things in perspective.

More man-made diseases like Anger, Hatred, Greed, Bribe, Ego:

From our hearts and minds should completely go,
We can then experience joy and inner peace to flow;
And remedy to all ailments by steadfast prayers can grow!

A rich woman went to a psychiatrist

and complained My whole life is
empty; it has no meaning. Can you help me out?
The Doctor called a sweeper who was cleaning the floors inside. In the
meantime, he told the rich lady, I will ask this cleaner to tell you about
her life. I want you to listen to her.

MS. CYNTHIA MUKHERJEE, VIA E-MAIL FROM THE UAE

The old maid servant put down her broom and told her story: Well, my
husband died of heart attack suddenly last year and 3 months later, my
only son was killed by a car while driving his bicycle. I had nobody to
support. I am not educated; I am weak, but still had to live. I had
nothing left. I could not sleep; could not eat; never smiled at anyone. I
started cleaning houses for survival.

JESUS BIDS US SHINE

This song, which I learnt while in St Saviour's Tamil
Church Sunday School, has held me in good stead for decades.
JESUS BIDS US SHINE
WITH A PURE, CLEAR LIGHT,
LIKE A LITTLE CANDLE
BURNING IN THE NIGHT;
IN THIS WORLD OF DARKNESS
SO WE MUST SHINE,
YOU IN YOUR SMALL CORNER
AND I IN MINE.
JESUS BIDS US SHINE
FIRST OF ALL FOR HIM,
WELL HE SEES AND KNOWS IT
IF OUR LIGHT GROWS DIM;

HE LOOKS DOWN FROM HEAVEN

TO SEE US SHINE,
YOU IN YOUR SMALL CORNER
AND I IN MINE.

Then one evening a little kitten followed me to my home. I felt sorry for
that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got it
some milk and it licked the plate clean. Then it purred and rubbed
against my leg and looked up at me with gratitude. For the first time in
months, I smiled. Then I started to think If helping a little kitten could
make me smile, may be doing something for people could make me
happy. So the next day, I baked some biscuits and took them to a
neighbour who was sick in bed.

JESUS BIDS US SHINE

THEN FOR ALL AROUND,
MANY KINDS OF DARKNESS
IN THIS WORLD ABOUND;
SIN AND WANT AND SORROW
SO WE MUST SHINE,
YOU IN YOUR SMALL CORNER
AND I IN MINE.

Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so

happy to see them happy. Today, I do not know of anybody who sleeps
and eats better than I do. I have found happiness, by giving it to others!
When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything that money
could buy but she had lost the things which money cannot buy.

Based on Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine before men, that they
may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven."

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20: 35

A TESTIMONY

God had already started his work through his angels. By noon, the local
police Inspector visited us to book the case at my house itself. Later he
commented that there was no need for me to take it up to the level of
the police commissioner! Our church friends Mr. Amirthasingh and Mr.
Jothi Pandian had intervened for us!

God Answers Prayers

An Alumnus of St Saviours from the 1960s-90s glorifies God
with this Testimony. We pray that this be a blessing to you.
1990 was a tumultuous year, when God tested us on several occasions,
but was faithful to give us adequate strength to overcome them.
It started with my getting an unsolicited job from a Mumbai company,
based on which I resigned my comfortable job at L&T. When it was time
to shift to Mumbai, I was informed by the new companys local office
that the job offer was withdrawn, as the new company is not being
formed. When my friends asked me what I would do, I could only
muster enough courage to (hope and) say that Ill do engineering
consultancy. By the time I reached home, I was informed by my wife that
a person from Bhubaneswar called twice, to consult me on some project
work! Then I knew that it was Gods plan and had peace of mind during
the next 3 years of my consultancy practice.

After 3 days, we got the news that the car was in Howrah Police Station.
The delayed information was only due to the fact that Howrah Police
does not report to Calcutta Police. It transpired that when the thieves
were passing through Howrah bridge on that fateful morning, the petrol
had ran out and the car stopped in the middle of Howrah bridge. When
Gods angels in the form of Howrah Police came to offer help by pushing
the car, the thieves ran away, abandoning the car! I got my car back
intact and in the same condition as before!
Praise be to our Lord!

MR. PHILIP DHINAKARAN, MEMBER: 1968-77 AND 1982-92

We had shifted to a house in Swarnalatha Street near Lansdowne road

and had to park our new Ambassador car on the road side. Often during
the day, we used to watch from our window, petty thieves stealing car
wipers and door handles, but never imagined we would be victims soon.
My neighbour, Laab Singh was the owner of a fleet of taxis. One day,
around 5 am, our neighbours driver rang the doorbell to inform us that
a couple of guys had driven away our car and asked us if we had given
our car keys to them. We were stunned when we saw our car missing. I
was advised to lodge a police complaint. My wife Vanaja immediately
called our children Rajiv, Vivien and Ranjit; the five of us held our hands
together and prayed. Vanaja pleaded that God would send his angels
and stop the car immediately. I left for the police station but they
refused to book any case. Mr. Abraham joined me and we went about
the Lake Area to see if the missing car stood on bricks, but to no avail.

A RECENT MIRACLE: Rev. Nirmal shares a recent miracle that has
happened to a boy, Shayam Sunder, 14 years old, who was suffering
from body swelling for the past six months at Rojhandi village. In spite of
different treatments given in the hospital, there was no relief. During
one of their outreach Ministries, the parents asked Rev. Nirmal and his

BIBLICAL PUZZLE CORNER 1:

HUMOUR: THATS A DIFFERENT WAY TO THINK!

This month, Saviours Chimes introduces a new Feature. Send in your

answers by 23 October to saviours.calcutta@gmail.com.
Answers would be published next month.

WHY DID GOD MAKE MOMS?

Answers by 3 to 5 year old kids to the question
What kind of little girl was your mom? I don't know because I wasn't
there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.

PUZZLE 1: I kept him steady and others away,

I kept them safe and showed the way
Once thrown upon the ground
I came alive with a hissing sound
I hit the rock as he was told
And that was when the water flowed
I am in the Bible What am I?

Who's the boss at your house? Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she
has to because dad's such an idiot.
What's the difference between moms and dads? Moms work at work
and work at home and dads just go to work at work. Moms have magic,
they make you feel better without medicine.

PUZZLE 2: I had many locks that didnt need a

key
I was far too many for you to count me
I was never to be shortened for a vow had been said
I was a symbol of strength that flowed from the head
But in a moment of weakness, my secret was out
I lay all in pieces when she gave the shout
I am in the Bible What am I?

What would it take to make your mom perfect? On the inside she's
already perfect. Outside, I
think some kind of plastic
surgery.
If you could change one
thing about mom, what
would it be? I would like for
her to get rid of those
invisible eyes on the back
of her head.
FROM MR. SUNIL ARULDAS

PUZZLE 3: I am old but also new

I may seem rather strange but all of me is true
I am 66 inside but really only one
I can be pocket-sized or times weigh a ton
All of me is about a person you really ought to meet
He often signs his name and each story is his treat
I am a world best-seller but sadly, seldom read
Perhaps you have seen me on a shelf or lying by a bed.
What am I?
