Tour Observations Logs

Observation logs are similar to Learning Logs a way to keep record and reflect on your
observations or an experience through reflective writing. They are a very effective tool to
enhance your learning and thinking about the experience in relation to what you are
studying. Observation logs require you to spend some time throughout each experience
(in our case tour) to think about and write down your thoughts about specific
observations that you made.
Purpose:

to record experience and help you learn

from an experience,
to support understanding and allow you
to show your understanding,
to develop critical thinking or the
development of a questioning attitude,
to increase your ability to reflect and be
aware of your learning
to enhance your problem-solving skills,

as a means of assessing what you have

learned,
to improve your writing, and to foster
communication
to foster reflective and creative
interaction in your group,
to support planning and progress in
research or a project,
as a means of communication between
you and another student or the teacher

Instructions:
You will write an observation log for two experiential tour that you attend in the
program. The requirements for the observation log are as follows:

Choose a minimum of three (3) questions from the list of reflective questions for
the tours.
Answer the questions in paragraph format there is no specific length
requirement as this will depend on how much detail you need to effectively answer
the question (which will likely be a minimum of one typed page or 250 words)
Your reflection should include your thinking about the institution/company you
observed, their practices and how they connect with the theories and concepts
you learned, and your own related thinking and ideas
Be critical and reflective in your answers dont simply summarize what you saw
talk about your own ideas, questions, life connections with the experience

Format
You can write your Observation Log in various different formats, depending on your
own preferences:

Paragraph-style paper
Journal or diary entry
Short question and answer

Assessment

Your tour Observation logs will be assessed, using this rubric. Since the purpose of
the logs is to help you track and reflect on your experience, the assessment will
focus on how well you show your understanding and thinking about the tours you
attend in the program and connect them to the academic learning.
