Lab n 1ESOGravity Lab

We have been studying different ideas about the organization of the Solar
System. In this lab, we are going to use a representation of the SS to learn
how the objects might be organized.
1.- Complete the analogy table:
The tennis ball

The tension in the sting

The Sun
The force

2.-Take the end of the string and spin the tennis ball around. What do you
feel? What does the tennis ball do? Record your observations:

3.- Try spinning the ball faster (be careful) and slower. What happens when
you spin the tennis ball very slowly?

4.- The Earth travels at a speed of about 30 Km per second or 1800 km per
hour. Why do you think that is?

5.- Newtons 1st Law of Motion says that an object in motion will keep going
at the same time unless some new force act on it. This force is called
Inertia. Newtons 2nd Law says that gravity is proportional to the mass of an
object. And the 3rd Law says that every action has an equal and opposite
reaction.
Using the model you have in your hand and the three Newtons Laws you
can explain the organization of the Solar System.

6.- What would happen in the Earth if inertia were higher than gravity?
7.- What if gravity were higher than inertia?
