Overview of Log Data Toolbox Applications

The Log Data Toolbox version 2.3 installation consists of:
DLIS to LIS Converter: Program used to convert DLIS (Digital Log Information Standard) files on disk
or tape* to LIS (Log Information Standard) or LIS files encapsulated in TIF (Tape Image Format).
LIS to DLIS Converter: Program used to convert LIS files on disk or tape* to DLIS.
Log Data Composer: Program used to 'Extract' files from or 'Combine' individual file into DLIS or LIS
storage sets on disk or tape*.
DLIS to ASCII Converter: Program used to convert data in DLIS files to LAS (Log ASCII Standard) or
other simple delimited text-based formats suitable for import into spreadsheet programs. The program
can convert to ASCII in real time, while DLIS files are being transmitted or are being generated.
LAS Certify: Program used to check Log ASCII Standard (LAS) files for compliance to the published
LAS standard. LAS Certify checks versions 1.2, 2.0 and 3.0 of the Canadian Well Logging Society LAS
specification.
ASCII InfoView: Program used to view ASCII or LAS files that are being written in real time.
DLIS InfoView: Program used to display summary information about the content of a DLIS or LIS file.
The application can also display information on DLIS files being written or generated in real time.
Other applications of interest but requiring a separate installation:
PDSView: Program used to display, annotate, and print Schlumberger produced graphic files in PDS
(Picture Description Standard) format. PDSView can display files that are being transmitted or
generated by Schlumberger in real time.
BlueView: Program to display TIFF and other standard raster image files of any color depth or
resolution. Images can be presented side by side, annotated, saved and printed. BlueView will also
read and convert PDS to TIFF if PDSView is installed.

Installation Recommendations

Log Data Toolbox installer generally requires Administrator or Power User privileges to install correctly on
Windows.
If you are prompted by the installer to reboot, close your applications and reboot. Failure to reboot will
cause unexpected errors in subsequent installations or in the use of the applications.

Changes from Log Data Toolbox 2.2

ASCII InfoView
None
DLIS to ASCII
LAS conversion no longer repeats frames when depth is less than zero.
LAS 3 Properties Only menu option added.
Corrected issue that absent values were being sometimes averaged
Correct some exceptions if expected parameters (LONG, EPD, etc) were missing.
Added DLIS creation date to LAS.
Correct an issue when a DLIS file has "not a number" in the channel frame value. Previously "infinity"
values such as 1.#INF or 1.#IND would show in the LAS output. Now the LAS absent value (default 999.25) is reported.
DLIS InfoView
Errors in the DLIS file are now shown. The error messages are often cryptic but can give an indication
of file problems.
Removed the software program version from the report as it was confusing to users thinking it was the
DLIS version. The software version is written in the HTML or PDS internal comments.
DLIS to LIS and LIS to DLIS
Log files are now created in users "temp" folder instead of being hardwired to C:\Temp.
File sizes should now be shown correctly for large files.
LAS Certify
.No changes.
Log Data Composer
Log files are now created in users "temp" folder instead of being hardwired to C:\Temp

Hardware and Software Requirements

Software Requirements:
Any of the following Microsoft Windows operating systems:
Windows 7 or Windows Vista, 64 bit or 32 bit
Online help requires the Win Help viewer to be downloaded from Microsoft. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
Reading tapes is not supported on Vista or Windows 7
Windows XP
Windows 2000 with SP5 or higher
Windows 95, 98, ME are not supported
Internet Explorer 6 or later is needed for DLIS InfoView. IE does not have be your default browser.
Recommended tape drive configurations:
Reading tapes on Vista or Windows 7 does not work due to changes by Microsoft and lack of driver support
for SCSI tape drives. It is recommended to use Windows XP if you need to read DLIS files on tape.
The following SCSI controller and tape drives have been verified to work correctly with the DLIS to LIS and
LIS to DLIS applications on XP or Windows 2000:
Adaptec 2940U2, 29160N, & 39160N SCSI controller
Buslogic 956 & 958 SCSI controller
HP 1599A, HP 1533A, & HP C1554 4mm DAT tape drive
Exabyte Eliant 820 8mm tape drive
The following 9-track tape configurations have been tested:
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller
Buslogic 956D & 958D SCSI controller
Kennedy 9603 9 track tape drive

Known Limitations and Issues

Color dithering will occur on systems where the video controller is not set to provide at least 256 colors (DLIS
to ASCII, DLIS to LIS, LIS to DLIS, Log Data Composer).
Be sure that you have enough disk space available before a conversion from tape is started. The
applications may exit ungracefully or cause operating system instability due to lack of disk space.
Application Specific Notes:
ASCII InfoView
ASCII InfoView does not work correctly with large files on Windows 95, 98, or ME. These operating
system versions are not supported.
DLIS InfoView

The DLIS InfoView application reads DLIS and LIS files, and formats a report in HTML. DLIS InfoView
uses an Internet Explorer (IE) component to display formatted HTML.
DLIS to ASCII:
On rare occurrences, a conversion will not complete, but will remain active as shown in the status
column. You will need to repeat the conversion to obtain a valid LAS file.
