Lesson plan #6 Spelling of basic words

Lesson Overview: We will focus on identifying actual words spelled using both
the Spanish alphabet and the emphasis we put on the vowels.
Resources or Materials Needed
LCD projector and document camera. Students will need paper and writing utensil.
Performance Objective: Students will identify a specific set of words spelled using
the Spanish alphabet.
Time: 60 minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: Students will review as a class the entire
Spanish alphabet along with the American Sign Language signs for each letter.
Volunteers will spell their Spanish names for the class using the Spanish alphabet.
We will again review the Spanish alphabet YouTube video as a reminder and entry
task.
Step 2: Content Presentation: Teacher will once again review the alphabet with
students using the signs. We will then practice as a class, having students write in
their notebooks a list of words the teacher spells.
Step 3: Learner Participation: We will play a class game of Hangman. The
teacher will model, spelling out the first word on the board with blanks, and
students will guess the letters using the Spanish alphabet. They will be called on
with playing cards with the students names on them. When a student guesses the
word spelled on the board, that student will come up and place his/her word in
blanks on the board and we will begin again.
Step 4: Assessment: There will be mostly informal or formative assessment.
Having students close eyes and show the signs allows the teacher to gauge how
many students have a grasp. We will not move on until there are no errors from the
students. The teacher will spell out five basic words on the listening quiz, along
with the alphabet.(Appendix A)

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: The alphabet serves as a foundation for

vocabulary for the entire school year and beyond as students advance with their
Spanish studies. If a student asks how to spell a word, he/she will be given the
spelling using the Spanish alphabet. Good foundation knowledge of the alphabet
sounds will serve to help students spell as they continue learning the language.
This activity will serve as a building block as we continue the year.
