Edwidge Danticat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1969. Her first languages were
Creole and French. Her father was a cab driver. When Edwidge was two, her father
moved to New York. Her mother moved to New York two years later. Edwidge lived with
her aunt in Haiti. She wrote her first story when she was nine years old.
At twelve, she moved to New York to live with her parents. She was very quiet because
she had an accent and was different from the other students. Edwidge planned to
become a nurse, but she became a writer instead. She published her first book of stories
in 1995. Then she wrote other books. She was even on the television show Oprah.

Sentence number 2 is the Passive Voice of sentence 1, because the object became into
subject, the verb Be is in its present form (is), the action verb is in its past participle form,
and the subject of the active voice became into object.
