SQ1 LISTENING

DIRECTIONS: Answer the questions as briefly as you can.

1. Name this innovation in 4 words only

Car for Blind Drivers

Give the 3 main features, which make this innovation unique.

1. DriveGrip
2. SpeedStrip
3. AirPix

Write a formal definition for each of the features you have listed. (Term + Genus + Differentia)
1. DriveGrip, coming from the words drive and grip, is a pair of gloves that uses vibration on the knuckle
part to convey instructions to the blind driver about how to steer. Direction and the intensity of the turn
will be relayed through these vibrations.
2. SpeedStrip is a massage chair that takes advantage of the vibrating elements which were rearranged
to convey instructions to the driver about speed. The vibrations will vary if the driver needs to use the
brake or gas pedal.
3. AirPix is a small tablet with holes in it. Compressed air expulses out of these holes which simulates
images of the environment. The blind person can use this as a reference for the actual surroundings to
avoid obstacles and other vehicles.

Identify the 3 stages mentioned in creating this innovation.

1. Perception
2. Computation
3. Non Visual Interfaces (NVIs)

Enumerate the 2 main problems that were encountered during the first stage of the project.
1.The dune buggy prototype can only be driven in a flat parking lot.
2. The road lanes used were only defined by red traffic cones.

Draw a flow chart that shows how the car works or its mechanism. (3 points)

The innovation, car for the blind, made by Dr. Dennis Hong
his team
follows three steps;
Perception, Computation and Non-Visual Interfaces. For the first step, the system must perceive the
environment. An initial measurement unit, GPS, two cameras and three laser range finders were used
to gather information about the surroundings of the vehicle. Information gathered like speed,
acceleration, location, lanes of the road and proximities of obstacles in the road are then processed in
the computer. The computer can do two things; give instructions and relay information. These
Interfaces
instructions and information are conveyed through non-visual interfaces. This informationNon-Visual
is relayed
through the DriveGrip, SpeedStrip and AirPix usually in the form of vibration and air. The(NVIs)
blind driver
can use this information to make active decisions while driving.
