Mark 1:9-15

JESUS BAPTISM BY JOHN IN

THE JORDAN 9-11
Why would Jesus be baptized if it is associated with repentance?
Jesus (and John) gave answer when John tried to stop it (Mt 3:14-15)
Three implications of Jesus baptism that correspond to his mission:
Levite consecration of washing and anointing (Ex 29:4-9) Jesus (Heb 2:17)
Royal consecration (1 Sam 16:13) Jesus (Jn 18:37; Acts 13:21-23)
Prophetic consecration Elisha (1 Kings 19:16) Jesus (Mark 6:4)
Identification = with humanity's sin and need of repentance (Heb 4:15)
Illustration = pointed to His pending death and resurrection (Mt 20:19)
Exemplification = He led the way for baptism command (Mt 28:18-20)

JESUS BAPTISM BY JOHN IN

THE JORDAN 9-11

Baptism has more symbolism because in Noahs Flood comparison (1 Pet 3:21)
Judgment = satisfied by flood then and Christs blood now (Gen 6-7; Eph 1:7)
Cleansing = removal of filth of sin (Gen 6-7; 1 Pet 3:21)
Salvation = Gods providence and preservation of those God declares righteous (Gen 6:9)
New Creation = by way of the ark, the righteous enter a new beginning (Gen 8:18)

JESUS BAPTISM BY JOHN IN

THE JORDAN 9-11

Heavens torn, visible descent of Spirit and audible voice?

Heavens = God breaking into human experience to deliver his people (Ps 18:9)
Dove = This is the sign John was told to look for (John 1:32-34)
Voice = affirms Jesus as Son and echoes 3 verses (Gen 22:2; Ps 2:7; Isa 42:1)

JESUS TEMPTATION BY
SATAN 12-13

The Spirit (immediately) Drove Him into the Wilderness

A better translation might be led out / sent out like a mission
Jesus willfully went - always determined to obey Fathers will
Mark connects temptation and baptism with Immediately

JESUS TEMPTATION BY
SATAN 12-13
Forty days in the wilderness the biblical number of waiting and testing
Like Moses, through whom came the law (Ex 24:18; 34:28; Jn 1:16-17)
Like Elijah whose return Israel expected in Jesus' time (1 Kings 19:8)

Tempted by Satan the Spirit led Him there, but Satan did the tempting
Preparation necessary as embarking on his public ministry
Demonstration showing the Son of God would NOT fail, not to see if he would
Identification with Israel and with the church

JESUS COMMISSION OF
PREACHING 14-15
Johns Arrest and Jesus Preaching 14-15
Johns End of ministry and Jesus Start of ministry are sequential
Why was John taken into custody? He upset Herod!
Gospel of God (Rom 1:1) it comes from God as a gift
Gospel of Jesus (Mark 1:1) Jesus is our door to the gospel
Gospel of Grace (Acts 20:24) no salvation apart from Gods grace GIFT!
Gospel of the Kingdom (Mark 1:14) you enter into His kingdom
