Colony Cage Con: Exposed

SAFE and Farmwatch investigation exposes the shocking truth behind
the new humane alternative to battery cages.

A new colony cage farm that supplies

eggs to major supermarkets was
exposed in an undercover investigation
showing extensive cruelty to hens.
Revealed on TV3s Story, the explosive
footage shows hens trapped beneath
perches and left to starve to death,
dead hens left to rot alongside live
hens, and severely de-feathered hens
living in overcrowded conditions.
Conditions on the farm were so bad that
of four hens rescued by investigators,
two later died from their injuries.
Public disapproval of caging hens led
to a phase-out of standard battery
cages by 2022. However as this
investigation shows the replacement
system is no better. Hens are still
suffering in cramped cages, and they

can even become trapped and starve

to death under the very equipment that
was supposed to improve their lives.
SAFE believes the Governments lack
of action on hen welfare means that
supermarkets have also been slow
to act. One of New Zealands biggest
supermarket chains Countdown
is owned by Woolworths Australia,
which committed to stop selling cage
eggs by 2018.
However, far from making a similar
commitment, Countdown continues
to sell cage eggs and even allows egg
producers to con their customers by
labelling eggs from caged hens as
colony-laid or colony-eggs giving
the impression that cages are indeed
a thing of the past.

If you are a Countdown customer, please

consider filling in a suggestion form and submitting
it in-store, or calling Customer Services on:
0800 40 40 40 to ask them to go cage-free.

Burger King Goes

Cage-free

Victory! Caged Hen

Farm Appeal Rejected

Burger King is the latest major player in

the New Zealand food industry to commit
to phasing out eggs from caged hens.

310,000 hens have been saved from

a life of misery following the final
rejection of an application to build
New Zealands largest colony cage
farm south of Auckland.

Burger King joins McDonalds and

Wendys in going cage-free, responding
to pressure from caring consumers
shocked by images of hens suffering
in overcrowded and cruel cages.
This news illustrates the strength
of the global cage-free movement.
In recent months, major supermarket
chains like Kroger and Wal-Mart in
the United States, all Austrian and
Dutch supermarkets, and almost all
Canadian supermarkets have agreed
to drop cage-eggs.

Auckland Council originally refused

Craddock Farms permission to build
the colony-cage egg facility in January
2015; however, an appeal was made
to the Environment Court. This has
now also been rejected.
SAFE joined Stop Craddock Farms
and local residents to protest outside
the hearings, and we are delighted at
the final decision which sends a powerful
message to companies considering
similar applications.

SPCA CEO Ric Odom and SAFE Executive Director Hans Kriek hand
62,000 petition signatures over to Green MP Mojo Mathers.

Over 62,000
say Ban Rodeo
Update:

Back in March, SAFE was joined outside

Parliament by the SPCA, Farmwatch
and Green MP Mojo Mathers to hand in
a petition calling on the Government
to ban rodeo for good.
Since the launch of the campaign over
62,000 compassionate individuals have
signed, demonstrating the strength of
anti-rodeo feeling in New Zealand.

SHOWING SUP-PAW-T :
Hugo - pictured here at the rodeo
petition handover - was found in a
rubbish bin when he was just a few
hours old so is a keen supporter of
standing against animal abuse!

Rodeos are condemned by vets,

welfare experts and animal protection
organisations worldwide. In New
Zealand, rodeo is banned from Auckland
Council land and SAFE, the SPCA and
Farmwatch say that it is time the rest
of the country followed suit.
In response to the petition, Parliament
will now have to consider a total rodeo
ban for the very first time. SAFE will
be meeting with representatives of the
Government on 2nd June to prove once
and for all that rodeo is cruel.
A big thank you to everyone who
signed the petition we look forward
to keeping you updated.

Duck Shooting Cruelty

Begins Again
Every year during duck shooting season our peaceful, beautiful wetlands
are disturbed by the sound of gunfire.

Around one million birds will be killed by

shooters this season. Many will not be
killed outright, but will be wounded and
left to die a lingering death.
To make matters worse, some birds
including protected native waterfowl
could be slowly poisoned to death after
ingesting lead shot they mistake for grit.
To stop this, the Government banned
the use of some lead shot in 2005,
but continued to allow it to be used in
lighter shotguns.
In correspondence with SAFE,
the Department of Conservation
acknowledged that lead shot entering
the environment and food chains causes

contamination but said that the

historical exemption was considered
justified to ensure that younger hunters
could enter the sport of waterfowl
hunting through the use of lighter guns
for which only lead shot was available
at an affordable price.
We think this is unacceptable, and are
calling on Minister for Conservation
Maggie Barry to ban all lead shot.

More Misery
for Pigs
A report by Government advisors
has claimed no suitable alternatives
to cruel farrowing crates exist,
condemning mother pigs to
confinement in a space so small
that they are unable to turn around.
Farrowing crates are just as cruel
as sow stalls, which after a long,
hard-fought campaign were finally
banned back in December on the
grounds of cruelty. The same needs
to happen to farrowing crates.
The time when it was ever acceptable
to cage animals in cruel factory farms
is over. Help get mother pigs out of cruel
farrowing crates by writing to Minister
for Primary Industries Nathan Guy.

Countdown targets advertising at

children via collectables such as
movie star cards. They care what kids
think. And kids care about animals
We decided to find out what Kiwi
kids had to say about Countdowns
sale of cage eggs. You can see the
resulting video on our YouTube channel
(SAFEAnimalAdvocacy).

The whole experience was really

awesome. I really enjoyed getting to
do such a special walk. At times it was
hard but the thought of helping animals
kept us going. I am so grateful to all the
people who have supported me
and donated money.

Thanks to some of our generous supporters, SAFE

SAFEshopper
New companies added to
cruelty-free shopping guide.
Back in March 2015 we achieved our
goal of a ban on cosmetics testing on
animals within New Zealand; however, the
ban does not cover imported products.
Crude and painful experiments continue
to be carried out on thousands of animals
globally, despite the fact that over 8,000
ingredients are proven safe and widely
available for commercial application.
More positively, being cruelty-free has
never been easier! SAFEshopper our
free guide to products not tested on
animals has just been updated and we
are delighted to welcome: Zoo Deodorant,
PeaceLoveJoy Skincare, M Collections,
Floralia Cosmetics, pique, Hebe
Botanicals, Forever Living Products,
First Light Flower Essences of
New Zealand and EVOSKIN.
