World Steel Association (WSA) estimates Pakistan crude steel use in 2014 at
5.4 mn tons. This pegs our steel per capita crude steel use at 29.4kg.
The domestic steel industry comprises of 330 companies with around 173
melting furnaces and 158 Rolling mills
Pakistan currently is rated as one of the lowest per capita consumer of steel.
This poses a huge potential of growth. Even with a moderate increase of 5kg
per capita would increase the demand of the growing population of nearly
1mtpa
Future outlook is quite prosperous with around USD 46bn worth of CPEC
projects including power and infrastructure, growing residential projects
would elevate the sector in future.
Moreover, Pakistan's steel industry is characterized by small plants, most of which are utilising
obsolete technology and these products cannot compete with cheaper imports, particularly from
India and China, where manufacturers enjoy benefits from economies of scale and more efficient
production processes. The domestic industry therefore operates at only 60 percent of its installed
capacity, despite strong local demand for steel products
