IEEE CSS Winter School on

Cyber-Physical Systems
Kalasalingam University
January 5-8, 2016

Funded by the IEEE CSS

Outreach Fund
General Chair
Dr. Seshadhri Srinivasan
International Research Center, Kalasalingam University
Organized by
Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering
Kalasalingam University

Overview
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) combine cyber capabilities
(computation and/or communication) with physical capabilities (sensing, actuation, and actual environment). The
inherent interconnection, heterogeneity, and combination
of different behaviours makes their analysis and design
overwhelming. Compounding this complexity is the translation of safety and reliability specifications imposed by applications into stringent robustness standards. Tools suitable for analysis and design of CPS should allow for modelling complex/hybrid behaviours considering the presence
of cyber components, as well as the presence of disturbances and other external phenomenon such as time-delays.
The winter school will bring together experts, researchers,
academicians, industries, and others working or initiating
their research in CPS. The main focus is to provide a good
background starting from the scratch and study the challenges in CPS. The workshop will also highlight the activities of IEEE CSS Committee on CPS, presentations from
academics, industries, and research institutions will cover
various aspects of CPS. In addition tools for building reliable CPS will also be discussed using timed-automata models and tools. Hands on training on emerging aspects of
CPS such as event triggered systems, model verification,
implementation aspects, and the future prospect of engineering systems using the CPS approach will be discussed.
Topics: Introduction to CPS, Modelling of Physical Process, Hybrid Systems and timed automata, Event Triggered
Systems, Building reliable CPS, applications of CPS, and in
addition the workshop will have hands on session on tools
used for analysing CPS.

Presenters
Prof.Jagannathan Sarangapani is with the
Missouri University of Science and Technology where he is the Rutledge-Emerson
endowed Chair Professor of Electrical
and Computer Engineering and site Director of NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Maintenance
Systems. He will speak on optimization
in CPS.

Prof.Luigi Glielmo is a Professor of

Automatic Control with the Dept.
of Engineering, University of Sannio, Benvento, Italy. He will speak
on engineering smart grids using
the CPS approach.
Dr.Srini Ramaswamy is the global
manager of ABB Symphony plus
and has been in the forefront of CPS
research for more than a decade. He
will speak on CPS and big-data in
energy and automation.
Dr. Ramkrishna Pasumarthy is with
the Department of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering at IITMadras.
His research interests
are in nonlinear systems, infinite
dimensional systems, time-delayed
systems, and large scale systems.
He will present on methods for
analysis and design for CPS.

Host Institution
Kalasalingam University is located at Anandnagar, Krishnankoil, near Srivilliputtur, Virudhunagar District, Tamilnadu. It fosters to the education of the backward area and
strives for the betterment of the downtrodden, physically
challenged, and underprivileged youth of the region. The
University runs an unique program for the speech and hearing impaired students in entire Asia on Engineering, and
have successfully trained and placed them in leading industries in the past decade of its existence. It conducts various
engineering, arts and science and management programs
for the rural youth. It has been accredited with A grade by
NAAC and has many departments accredited by NBA. The
research in the University has been acknowledged by funding agency. The TIFAC Core on Networking, nCARD math
center for research in discrete mathematics funded by DST,
International Research Center, and more than 16 research
centers in the University stand testimony to its commitment
towards fostering education, research, and training.
