There is much to see here, and anywhere you would

want to go is just a short drive away. A quick trip on
highway 198 and you can be at the General Sherman
Tree in Grants Grove. Our mighty redwoods and giant
sequoias are quite a site that you will never forget.
If you don't want to drive yourself, take the Sequoia
Shuttle. This wonderful and affordable bus ride
includes the cost of admission into Sequoia National
Park and allows everyone to experience the great
views during the scenic ride. Once in the national
park, there is also a free transit system that will
take you to the many picturesque sites.
In addition to wilderness areas, there are many smaller
communities in the county that each have their own
unique qualities and attractions. The cities of Exeter,
Visalia, and Lindsay all have beautiful downtowns
with murals and arrays of restaurants to enjoy. Our
communities are thriving with various activities; some
the freshest and best fruit and vegetables can be
found at venues such as the Visalia Farmers Markets.
Visalia in particular, as well as many of our other local
communities, offers a vibrant mosaic of performing
arts and cultural events. From the Visalia Waiters Race
to the countywide arts celebration known as Taste

mountain bikes for all kinds of excursions. Heading to
Sequoia National Park? Getting up those hills may be
the most scenic and serious workout you have ever

If you want to stay in town for a bike ride, take your

pup for a jaunt or need help reaching your goal
of 10,000 daily steps, check out one of the citys
maintained trails: Mill Creek, Modoc Ditch, St. Johns

PLAZA PARK RACEWAY
is a 1/5 mile clay oval racetrack where spectators

can be close to the action as micro sprint cars are
transformed into colorful blurs zooming around and
around fighting for first place. Grab dinner and a
cold drink before you take a seat. Races run from
spring to fall most Fridays and kids under ten and
military personnel (with ID) gain free entry. Check

In the greater Plaza Park there is a fishing pond, dog
park, golf course, horseshoe pits and tennis courts.

Having a TASTE is whats trending in everything from wine to garlic at festivals up and down the state.
Downtown Visalians has created the ultimate TASTE event that sells out each year. Just buy a ticket to
Taste of Downtown and you have the opportunity to sample fabulous foods from the bevy of restaurants in our
fabulous Downtown area. Restaurants open their doors once a year and offer a taste from their favorite menu
items. The TASTE ticket also gets you entrance to wine tasting hosted by the Bank of the Sierra and beer tasting
hosted by Suncrest Bank.
Spend the evening strolling the streets while savoring culinary delights and enjoying live music. Or you may
want to jump on the Visalia Towne Trolley for a lift to your favorite restaurant.
Visitors from all over the United States have come to this popular event. Some have dubbed TASTE of

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE
Holiday happiness is all around during the month of December!

2016 HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE happens once a week from 5:00pm-8:00pm on December 1st, 8th, 15th and
22nd. Enjoy yourself as you stroll through shops and pick the perfect gift all while listening to holiday tunes
performed in the streets of Downtown. Local high school bands entertain and delight you while you stroll,
shop and dine on these special open house evenings.
To top off the perfect holiday evening you can take a ride on a horse drawn carriage around Downtown
Visalia. What an experience and what a great value! ($5 for up to 4 people)
You wont want to miss a special holiday viewing of the movie Polar Express on Thursday, December 8th
at 5:30pm. Tickets are only $5.00 per person and will be shown at the famous FOX Theater located at 308
West Main in Visalia.

You havent experienced the full joy of the holiday season till you kick
it off with a parade! Grab your family and friends and enjoy the holiday
spirit as it passes by on Main Street in Downtown Visalia.
The 71st Candy Cane Lane Parades the theme of the CCL Parade is A
Storybook Christmas and will make its way down Main Street starting
at 7:00 pm on Monday November 28th. This traditional event gets local
television coverage by ABC 30 Fresno and is a true holiday gathering of
all ages. Downtown is lined with smiling faces and the floats and parade
participants have a memorable time as the holiday spirit makes its way
into Visalia. Come join the fun and find your holiday place.

On Another Level

If the Sequoias make Visalia a destination, then its

the traditional, family-oriented atmosphere that
makes people stay well, that and the food.
Between the surrounding agriculture and charming
downtown, visitors might be surprised by the citys
diverse and world-class restaurants, but then chefs
like James Jessen have made a point to curate
Visalias culinary scene.
James moved to Visalia in 1986, working then for
a concrete company, though he has since opened
many successful restaurants: Tazzaria, PhD, Pizanos,
and most recently the renaissance of Visalia
landmark butcher shop, Glicks.
My whole career is 30 years of basically going
construction to kitchen, back and forth, from
the ground up, from dishwasher to prep cook to
busboy, says James.
His flagship restaurant Tazzaria (208 West Main
Street) actually has roots in a concept for drive-thru
coffee lighthouses, which he named Tazzaria. Tazza
meaning cup in Italian, and ria place. The place of
the cup, explains James. But when investors fell
through, James found himself standing outside local
Visalia coffee shop Java Jungle.

Basically, with the last of the funds I asked if

they would sell says James. They did, and a
week later James opened Tazzaria.
As a coffee shop, Tazzarias first years were
difficult. Really, really, really tough, recalls
James, especially when his most regular
customer, Michelle, was more interested in
selling than buying.
Shed come in selling her Bacci Bars a
homemade granola bar but I wanted to
have coffee with her, says James. So Id
buy her inventory even though I had no use
for it. Thats how we started dating.
He had no use for them because he had
no business, laughs Michelle. Hed buy
everything, and I thought, wow, this guy is
super busy. I found out later they werent
even being sold.
Thankfully she gave in before I went broke,
laughs James. In the end I got the bar and
the girl.
Tazzarias success may only have coincided
with his marriage to Michelle, but it brought
a family-element to their business.
Home. Tazzaria is our home, says Michelle.
If James and Michelle arent working, youll
find them sitting on the patio eating with
family, employees, customers, friends.

In 2011 the Jessens opened Pizanos (129 E Main St), an artisanal

wood-fire pizzeria with a direct concept, ingredients simple,
clean, as organic as we can get, says Michelle. A great lunch
or dinner spot, Pizanos offers patio seating right in the thick of
Visalias Thursday evening Farmers Market.
Then in 2014, James opened under Tazzaria, a pub-style noir bar,
PhD, with more than a dozen craft beers on tap, and serving what
James calls a hungry guys dinner, like a thick chop and fries.
Upstairs Tazzaria maintains its sit-down atmosphere, serving
full-plate dishes like their popular rib eye with chimichurri and
roasted potatoes. Tuesday through Thursday evenings the
restaurant serves three-course meals for about twenty bucks a
person.
Just last year, the Jessens purchased a local and traditional

butcher shop, Glicks (604 W Murray Ave), to which theyve
added a European-style market and classic burger joint.
Weve ramped it up, says James, who describes the
markets focus as hard-to-find, higher-end Italian, including
cheese, freshly baked breads, imported grains and pastas,
and of course, premium cuts and Certified Angus Beef.
Its where you can come and get what you need for a day
or two, says James, like for a quick trip to the Sequoias, or a
few nights in town.
Between Tazzaria, PhD, Pizanos and Glicks, a visitor can
grab any meal, drinks, even the goods for a picnic or night
in, and all within walking distance. If you are limited on time
and must decide Tazzaria is the upscale embodiment of the
organic-loving, do-it-yourself movement in restaurant form.
Fresh ingredients from local farmers and everything from
scratch. Not only is their food on another level, their drinks
are as well: they roast their own coffee beans, only serve craft
beer, and pride themselves on their local wine list.
Plus theres always the promise of good eats, but whats even
more valuable to those visiting Visalia, its welcoming and
familiar faces.

LIFE IN THE VALLEY EQUALS
Millions of Americans suffer from nasal

allergies, commonly known as hay
fever. An ear, nose, and throat specialist
can help determine the substances
causing your discomfort. The specialist
can also develop a management plan
that will help make life more enjoyable.
Histamine produces common allergy
symptoms such as itchy and watery
eyes. It can also produce sneezing,
stuffy nose, runny nose, scratchy
throat, hives, and, shortness of breath.
Other less common symptoms are
eye irritations, skin problems such as
eczema, and even breathing problems
like asthma.
Many common substances can be
allergens. Pollens, food, mold, dust,
feathers, animal dander, drugs such
as penicillin, and airborne pollutants
commonly cause many to suffer
allergic reactions.
Early springtime allergic rhinitis is most
often caused by pollens of trees such
as elm, maple, birch, poplar, beech,
ash, oak, walnut, sycamore, cypress,
hickory, pecan, cottonwood, and alder.
Flowering plants rarely cause allergy

symptoms. Often fragrant flowers are blamed for the uncomfortable symptoms, yet they are rarely the cause;
their pollens are too heavy to be airborne. Late springtime pollens come from grasses like timothy, orchard, red
top, sweet vernal, Bermuda, Johnson, and some bluegrasses. One of the major causes of allergic rhinitis in the
United States is ragweed pollen. It begins pollinating early to mid-autumn.
Certain allergens are present all year long. These include house dust mites, pet dander, and molds. Symptoms
caused by these allergens often worsen in the winter when the house is closed up, due to poor air ventilation.
Mold spores also cause allergy problems. Molds are present all year long and grow both outdoors and indoors.
Dead leaves and farm areas are common sources for outdoor molds. Indoor plants, old books, bathrooms, and
damp areas are common sources of indoor mold growth.
For some allergy sufferers, symptoms may be seasonal. For others allergies produce year-round discomfort.
Symptom control is most successful when multiple approaches are used together to manage the allergy.
They may include reducing exposure to allergens, medications, and allergy shots or drops. If used properly,
medications, including antihistamines, steroid sprays, antihistamine sprays, and decongestants, can be helpful.
Even over-the-counter drugs can be helpful, but some may cause drowsiness.
When allergy symptoms are not well controlled with
over the counter medications, a doctor should be
consulted.
Wear a dust mask when mowing grass or cleaning
house (most drugstores sell them).
Change your air filters regularly in heating and air
conditioning systems and vacuum cleaners and/or
install an air purifier. Consider a HEPA filter in your
bedroom or other rooms where you spend a lot of
time.
Keep windows and doors closed during heavy pollen
seasons.
Rid your home of sources of mold and mildew.
If you have a pet, ask your ENT for suggestions to
allow you to enjoy your pet while also enjoying a life
free of allergies.
Remove carpet from bedrooms.
Use over-the-counter antihistamines and
decongestants as needed and as tolerated. Discuss
hay fever and allergy symptoms with a physician when
experiencing an allergic reaction.

KAWEAH OAKS PRESERVE:

The land under present-day Kaweah Oaks Preserve

was nearly leveled in 1982. Its hard to imagine that
happening now to a preserve that annually sees
thousands of students, hikers, and native species
lovers walking beneath Kaweah Oaks broad canopy
of old trees, trails trekked by school field trippers and
visitors making year-round use of its well-maintained
trails. Many of Kaweah Oaks trees are many hundreds
of years old. It is the last remaining native Valley Oak
forest of its size and kind in the region.
In recent years, climate change, persistent drought, a

dropping water table and fire have threatened to alter
Kaweah Oaks, yet the preserve persists. In fact, its
uses have only expanded, particularly educational and
recreational programming by Sequoia Riverlands Trust,
owner and manager of the preserve along with five
others in the region.
With well more than 10,000 visitors per year using
KOP for a variety of disparate uses from commercial
photography and film location shoots, to biology field
studies and university research projects, 5K runs and
50
day hikes to yoga classes. Increased visitor numbers

have meant the need for restroom facilities, which
have just been completed.
With the water table plummeting throughout the San

Joaquin Valley, Kaweah Oaks and its native droughttolerant species are being tested. They are also being
observed; phenologists monitor native plant cycles
and regeneration, biologists examine the effects of
wildfire, university researchers study the effects of
fog on valley oaks adaptation, and student interns
learn about stewardship, facilities development,
among many other uses. Despite the climatological
hammering, Kaweah Oaks gets more use than ever.
One cannot help but wonder what the forests fate

might be today had it remained in private hands. It
might still have been the last of its kind, but quite
likely it would be a forest felled, a ghost of centuries
past offering no further shade, recreation, educational
opportunity nor beauty from its increasingly rare
animal habitat.
With todays reports of persistent, exceptional drought

and resulting ag industry uncertainties clouding our era
of mostly unrelenting blue skies, it is perhaps reassuring
that Kaweah Oaks Preserve stands persistent and proud
a comforting reminder of what once was. Just like KOP,
our region of Central California was once a vast riparian
Valley Oak woodland habitat replete with deer and elk,
big cats even grizzly bears formerly found among the
abundant flora and fauna in the Kaweah River Delta until
the mid-1800s.
Fortunately, Kaweah Oaks Preserve still stands to offer
echoes of that not-so-distant past. For the sights and
sounds of a vanished era and humanitys primeval
habitat, come out and walk or sit among these massive
trees, and ponder the persistent thrum of the ancients
who have dwelt there before you.

fantasy area provides visual and tactile stimulation for
early learners and a place that moms and dads can
discover the fantasy world about them right along with
the toddlers. Theres even a lactation station built in
for breastfeeding moms.
For the more active kids, we have several grouporiented exhibit areas including Grove Pick and
Pack sponsored by Booth Ranches which simulates

a citrus packing house, U-Fix-It Garage which is
an auto service center, and Harmony Playground
sponsored by Cheryl and Art Christman which is an
outdoor, percussion-based, collaborative music-making
structure. In addition, we have the Active Hands,
Active Minds area which provides multiple coarse
and fine motor skills exhibits, the Wonderful Water
exhibit sponsored by Cal Water which simulates the
water cycle in Central California, Angelas Castle
an imagination-driven dress-up area with a built-in
photography station, and our popular Imagination
Station by Eloise which includes always-available
crafts and a painting station in glass.
These and many other exhibits are available to families
at $8 per person, with kids under 1 entering for free.
Admission covers an entire day of fun plus you can
leave and re-enter any number of times in the same
day. We also offer family memberships, birthday
parties, and other special event bookings. We run
several standing events during business hours that are
free with admission, including Story Time, Imagine with
Keira, Mommy and Me and Daddy Too just to name a
few. With an After School Program, Camps in summer,
winter, and spring, plus even adults-only events, we
try to make sure every member of the family can find

Get ready Visalia! 2017 Visalia Senior Games are on their way. Senior Games are taking the sporting world by
storm at the local, state, national and world competition levels and will be in Visalia in the spring of 2017.
Senior Games are open to those ages 50 and better and with 11 age divisions for men and women in each event,
its certain there will be a lot of winners.
The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) has 19 events and, to be included in the NSGA, a local organizer
must offer at least one-half of the NSGAs approved sports by the third year of hosting Senior Games. Visalia
held its first event in 2015 with the second event scheduled for 2017.

Weve selected events that we feel appeal to the 50+
community and are at the heart of Senior Games, says
Jeannie Greenwood, Director for the City of Visalia
Parks & Recreation Department. We have City-owned
facilities that will host most of the events, the events

are programs that we already offer and know are
popular in the Central Valley and they are events we
have the expertise to facilitate.
The 2017 Visalia Senior Games is being planned for
this spring and will take place March 16th through
March 19th and March 25th through the March 26th.
An event of this size, with the potential to attract not
only hundreds of local participants but seniors from
throughout the state, will need a lot of resources,
states Greenwood. Were excited about hosting this
event and hope we can count on our community to
support our efforts.
There are many ways to get involved, adds
Greenwood. From joining the Visalia Senior Games
Planning Task Force to volunteering at an event, to
providing sponsorships and contributions; we will need
lots of people to make our second event even better
than the first.

Stars Shine
THE
OVER TULARE COUNTY

The Country Music Stars were out in full force for the
10th Anniversary Jugfest on Saturday, June 4th held
a short drive away in Tulare. Thousands of country
music fans showed up to enjoy nearly nine hours best
of country music at the biggest and longest-running
Free Country Concert in California. The hits were
nonstop, from the first song by opener Tara Thompson
to the closing set featuring an onstage appearance by
co-headliner Lee Brice with Billy Currington, covering
Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places. In between
there were great music sets by Jugfest alumnus Love
& Theft, local favorite Chris Janson (who made a
special detour to be at this years show before rushing
off for a nighttime appearance in the Bay Area),
John Berry, upstarts Jordan Rager and LANco, and
Thompson Square with their first appearance since the
birth of their baby four months ago. The depth and
breadth of the variety of artists as well as the special
arrangements they made to play at Jugfest speaks
to the importance of the annual event, and to their

long-standing relationships with the valleys own KJUG

COUNTRY.
This years warm weather was mitigated by more sun

shades then at past Jugfest concerts, and a wellreceived water truck that seemed to be employed
more for the purpose of cooling off overheated festival
goers than keeping the dust down, though it did
manage to get both jobs done.
It was a great day for live country music, with people
coming from all over the west to attend another
strong Jugfest lineup! The country music supporters
sampled fare from local food vendors, particularly the
snow cone purveyors, who were doing a brisk business
under the afternoon sun.
