English 113: Feminist Perspectives

Critical Summary #1
In the introduction to Defining Feminism: Tumblr, Bra- Burners and Beyonce,
Celia Buckman explains some people do not know what feminism is or do not care about the
topic of feminism. Specifically, Celia Buckman surveyed a sample of people to attain their
perspective of feminism. As the author herself put it As for completing the sentence, the
spectrum ranged from I think feminism is awesome to I think feminism is something that
should not exist to I have no idea what feminism is.(paragraph four) Although some people
believe feminism is defined by people protesting and burning bras, there is a bigger picture of
feminism. Not all feminists behave in a certain way. Being a feminist just means that you believe
that men and women should be treated equally. The author insists people should be able to do
what they find fulfilling without gender-based discrimination.(paragraph seven) In sum, then,
her view is that people should do whatever they please to do without being judged, whether they
are male or female.
What I learned from this reading is that many people do not know what feminism is and
many do not care about the topic. This is alarming because feminism is a topic that needs to be
addressed and people need to be aware about it. The definition I would give would be: feminism
is fighting or advocating for equality for people. My perspective of feminism is that it is an
important topic because people are being judged on the daily basis for doing what they find
fulfilling. Which is bad because people should not be judged on things that make them happy.
This article changed my perspective on feminism because now I know the topic of feminism and
also know how important it is to defend people who are discriminated. People getting bullied and
harassed for doing what they like is wrong.
From here, I will inform people about feminism and be patient when getting negative
feedback on the topic. I will inform them that not all feminists protest and hate men. Many
people stereotyped feminists and it is my job to get the real definition out. At the end of the day,
we all think differently so I should not judge anyones perspective. I should just give them
information about what it really means to be a feminist. A feminist is someone who believes in
equality. This particular feminist perspective affects politics, pop culture, and education because
women get judged more often without knowing the true meaning of feminist. Women already are
paid less than men in the same jobs so being judged off the bat makes it worse than it already is.
The reading I chose innovated and expanded my ideas because now I know the true meaning of
feminism and know that you dont have to protest to be a feminist.
