Fluid Mechanics (120A)

Mid-term 1 (Fall 2011), 10/14/11, Time: 11am-12.15 pm
State all assumptions clearly and justify them. NO BOOK or PHOTOCOPIES of BOOKS
1. (20 points) A dam spillway gate holds back water of depth h. The gate weights 500 1b/ft and is hinged
at A. At what depth of water will the gate rise and permit water to ow under it?

2. (30 points) The device in the schematic diagram on the next page is a viscosity pump. It consists of a
rotating drum inside of a stationary case. The case and the drum are concentric. Fluid enters at A, ows
through the annulus between the case and the drum, and leaves at B. The pressure at B is higher than that
at A, the difference being DP. The length of the annulus is L. The width of the annulus h is very small
compared to the diameter of the drum, so that the ow in the annulus is equivalent to the ow between two
at plates.Assume the ow to be laminar. Find the pressure rise and efciency as a function of the ow
rate per unit depth.

3. (50 points) An oil barge has developed a fine crack in its side, running a length L perpendicular to the
sketch. Oil leaks out of the crack and runs up the side of the barge (inclined at an angle ) in a very thin
layer, as sketched.
Assume that the flow in the oil layer is highly viscous, that the oil is less dense than the water, and that it is
much more viscous than water.
(a) If the oil layer is found to have a thickness b, what is the oil volume flow rate Q out through the slit?
(b) Describe qualitatively how the field differs when the viscosity of the water is not negligible compared
with the oil viscosity.
