WEEKLY SCAN FOR THE WEEK OF OCT. 31ST-----NOV.

4TH
SPELLING

Unit 2; Week 5, Digraphs *****This weeks spelling words all


contain digraphs. You will find the list of words below as usual. Our spelling test
will be on Friday.

LANGUAGE

We will begin our study of verbs. Our lessons will focus on


identifying verbs in sentences and subject/verb agreement (with present tense
verbs). Specific pages that will be covered are pages 138-141 and pages 164-165.

READING

Our unit 2; week 5 essential question is How do people figure things


out? Our genre for this week will be poetry. Students will focus on the literary
elements of alliteration and rhyme. Our comprehension skill will be authors point
of view, and our word study skill will be identifying similes. You will find the list of
reading vocabulary words (and their definitions) below as usual. Our week 5 quiz
will be on Friday.

MATH

We will complete our last lessons from chapter 4 (pages 163-174).


These lessons focus on multiplying with 8, multiplying with 9, and solving word
problems with multiplication. We will then begin reviewing all skills from the
chapter in preparation for a test (either next Tuesday or Wednesday). On
Wednesday, students will have a 100 problem/6 minute subtraction facts quiz. That
means that we are only one week away from our 5 minute TEST! We will then
begin timed multiplication facts quizzes!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will continue our study of national government with


chapter 13 from the old pink and blue textbook. This weeks lessons will focus on
how Washington, D.C. was chosen to be our capital and some of the most famous
places to visit there.

Unit 2; Week 5 Reading Vocabulary Words


1. alliteration-----when several words in a line of poetry start with the same sound
2. bounce-----to spring back up after hitting something
3. free verse-----poetry that does not always rhyme and can have any number of lines
or stanzas
4. imagine-----to picture a person or thing in the mind
5. inventor-----a person who invents something
6. limerick-----a short funny poem that rhymes and has five lines in each stanza
7. observer-----a person who watches or notices something
8. rhyme-----when two words end with the same sound (like fever and beaver)
