CIVL 4146 Hydraulics

Design Project No. 1

Objective: To design a pipe connecting your house to the water supply line using the
engineering principles.
Tasks:
1. First of all estimate the number of persons living in your house by the end of next
20 years (design period of the pipe). Use an average growth rate of Oman to
estimate it.
2. Assuming an appropriate value of water consumption per person per day, you
can calculate the total water demand of your household per day. You can refer
to Guidelines published by Ministry of Water and Electricity, Oman.
3. Determine the length of pipe required to connect your house to the water supply
line by measuring the distance from the water supply line to the built area of
your house.
4. Determine if you need to use any elbows and valves in this pipeline. Estimate the
head loss of these appurtenances using the information in your textbook.
5. Use three different materials to design the pipe, for example (a) PVC, (b)
Galvanized iron, and (c) New cast iron pipe using two methods for each
material(i) Darcy-Weisbach and (ii) Hazen-Williams formulae.
6. Find out prices of the above types of pipes from the market and calculate the
price of your designed pipes.
7. Discuss your results by comparing the values obtained from the two formulae
and choose the best design from the alternatives you have. Your final choice
should be based on the technical requirements, cost, environmental impacts (of
the pipe material), health concerns (related to the pipe material) and life of the
pipe material.
Resources:
1. Lecture notes on Chapter 3 in your textbook
2. Guidelines for water supply networks by Ministry of Water and Electricity,
Oman
Support:
1. Class discussions
2. Group discussions
Notes:
(a) List the contribution of each team member clearly mentioning the tasks and time
taken to complete each task
(b) Any non-cited equation, figure, graph or table will be subjected to negative marking
