Subject: Science

Grade Level: 8th

Opening Hook/Warm Up:

1. Tell me everything you know about the
liver
2. What do you think you will learn about
this topic
3. What would you like to learn more about
this topic?
Objective:
1. Describe the potential consequences of
using alcohol and other drugs.
2. Identify and discriminate what factors
may cause the liver not to function
correctly due to alcohol and other drugs
3. Analyze the functions of the liver related
to the human body. The students will
compare and contrast when the liver is
functioning properly or not.

TEK: Science 8.2 A, B &E

8.2 (A) plan and implement comparative and
descriptive investigations by making
observations, asking well-defined questions,
and using appropriate equipment and
technology
8.2 (B) design and implement comparative and
experimental investigations by making
observations, asking well-designed question,
formulation testable hypotheses, and using
appropriate equipment and technology
8.2 (E) analyze data to formulate reasonable
explanations, communicate valid conclusions
supported by the data, and predict trends.

Big Understanding:
Students will then brainstorm what they have learned and compose a comparison piece regarding
the liver which should show if students can organize their information in a logical order.
Summative Assessment Evidence:
Students will take a 10 question quiz to access their understanding
Higher Level Questions to Incorporate: Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:
Now that we have analyzed what affects liver functioning and after reviewing a healthy and
unhealthy liver; use the Outliner App to organize, compare and contrast your ideas. Share and
discuss with your classmates on Outliner.
Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:
Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO: I will show a picture of a healthy liver and an unhealthy liver,
while listing their observations.
I will ask students how the familiar they are with the liver functions
Guided Practice: WE DO: I will distribute pictures to each student showing the function of a
health and unhealthy liver while students read article from the projector overhead.
I will explain assignment to students Using the pictures the students will research each of the
pictures they found on the internet; reminding students to find facts
I will explain to students the expectations (or rubrics) for the presentation

CFU (Checking for understanding): Students will be divided into groups and allowed 20 minutes
to discuss what they have learned.
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students): Students will use creative thinking to
create a five sentence paragraph to describe the pictures they observed.
Ending, Summary / Reflection: Students are given index cards which they will list questions they
are unsure about or need more clarification; they questions will be an open discussion.
Materials / Resources: Obtain pictures of a human liver from the internet at the following sites:
http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/liver
http://www.innerbody.com/image_digeov/card10-new2.html
https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/medical-consequences-drug-abuse/liver-damage
Grouping Patterns: Students will be divided into 2 groups, use number count system to create
groups with a good mix of students.
Technology: Outliner by Carbon fin (http://www.carbonfin.com/)
Outliner allows students to organize your thoughts, tasks, and projects. Students can easily create
to-do list or track an entire project anywhere they are and share their outlines.
