Common Core Aligned Math

Standards

Bewitching Factors and Multiples? is aligned with

the Math Content Standards for Grades 3-5, as listed below.

Grade 3:
Multiply and divide within 100.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.C.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the
relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 5 = 40, one knows 40 5 = 8) or
properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using
equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation
and estimation strategies including rounding.3

Grade 4:
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two
two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the
calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 7 as a statement

that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as
multiplication equations.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using
drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative
comparison from additive comparison.1

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number
answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems
using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental
computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Gain familiarity with factors and multiples.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.B.4 Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1100. Recognize that a whole number
is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1100 is a multiple of a given onedigit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1100 is prime or composite.

Grade 5:
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Bewitching Factors and Multiples

MATERIALS:
A Cup
A Bewitching Factors and Multiples Recording Sheet
Candy Corn / M&Ms, Skittles, or other small candy
A Pencil

PRIOR PREPARATION:
Copy one recording sheet per student
Divide the small candies between the students
(each child should have between 25-35
candies in their cup).

A paper towel

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
To provide a basic review of factors, prime and composite numbers, multiples and
multiplying.
Integrate the seasonal holiday of Halloween in a fun, Common Core Aligned way

HOW TO CONDUCT ACTIVITY:

1. Review factors and multiples with the class prior to conducting this activity (I have
a 20-slide interactive presentation on factors and multiples for the SmartBoard
that is a great supplement to this Halloween activity: Factor & Multiple
Warm-Ups: 20 Interactive SmartBoard Activities for Grades 3-5)
2. Review prime and composite numbers.
3. Students should have some prior knowledge of the multiplication algorithm.
4. More specific activity instructions can be found on the student activity sheet.

EXTENSION:

Give students a different number of candies! You could even give them imaginary
candies for the extension, or they could use symbolic candies
such as
dried beans, cubes, etc.
The
Have students think about more houses!
opportunities to challenge quick finishers and strong
mathematicians is endless!

Halloween!
Ghosts, goblins, witches and of course
CANDY! What a great chance to do some
Math!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
A Cup
A Bewitching Factors and Multiples Recording Sheet
Candy Corn / M&Ms, Skittles, or other small candy
A Pencil
A paper towel

Your teacher will give you a certain amount of candy in

a cup for the activity.
PART ONE: It is Halloween night. You trick-or-treat at the first house of the evening, and you receive a
handful of candy treats. You decide to share them evenly between your friends to get energy for the
night ahead! Carefully pour out your candies onto your paper towel and count them.

Part THREE:
SHOW YOUR WORK. Assuming you received the same number of candies as the number in Part
One from each house, how many candies would you have after:
2 houses?

5 houses?

10 houses?

15 houses?
