Collegiate Conference yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.
Maribeth Lara produced his best game this season, collecting 17 points, including the big hits in the fifth and
final set as the Lady Patriots secured third place in Group B.
Guest player Desiree Dadang added 12 markers while star hitter Iumi Yongco had 11 for La Salle which tied
Benilde with a 2-3 record.
La Salle-Dasmarias, however, secured the last berth to the quarters on account of the winner over other rule.
Janine Navarro led the Blazers with 18 markers.
The Lady Patriots thus joined unbeaten Ateneo and University of San Tomas sides in the next round.
The two-hour La Salle-Dasma win likewise slammed the door shut on SSC and TIP, which finished with 1-4
cards and were hoping for a St. Benilde victory to force a three-way tie for fourth.
UST ended its elimination round on a high note, beating San Sebastian College in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15,
25-17, while University of Batangas defeated Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22,
28-26, in a battle of winless teams in Group A.
UBs victory was partly aided by PUPs back-to-back miscues.
The win was the Tigresses fourth straight after dropping their opener against the Ateneo Lady Eagles.
It likewise allowed UST to grab solo second place behind Ateneo, which swept the eliminations last Saturday
with a win over Technological Institute of the Philippines.
Pam Lastimosa set the tone for USTs rampage with power moves especially in the first set where the SSC
belles gave them a hard time.
After a tense first set, UST dominated the second and third sets as EJ Laure and seldom used Alexa Rafael
inspired by the huge plays of Lastimosa joined the fray.
The two finished what Lastimosa started with their courageous efforts that shattered SSCs confidence.

Jimmy Alapag is set to unretire for a possible stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the coming FIBA Asia
Championship in China.
But instead of returning to the Texters his home for nearly 13 years before retiring last February Alapag
will be moving to Meralco following a three-team trade that also involved Blackwater.
The trade according to sources has already been approved by the PBA Commissioners Office.
Alapag, 37, has been practising with Gilas Pilipinas in a bid to beef up a team badly hit by withdrawals of
prospective players. But his comeback wont be limited to Gilas this time after he was traded to the Bolts.
The Tropang Texters first shipped Alapag to Blackwater for Larry Rodriguez in a one-on-one trade.
Blackwater then traded Alapag to Meralco for guard Mike Cortez and forward James Sena.
Alapag, has career averages of 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists.
Rodriguez was initially with TNT at the start of last season but was traded to Blackwater for the first round
pick of 2015, which turned out as the No. 1 overall selection in the PBA Rookie Draft on Aug. 23 at the
Robinsons Place in Manila.

Senator Cynthia Villar yesterday urged the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) to intensify efforts
to inform its members about the free hemodialysis treatment package the agency is offering for those
suffering from kidney disease.
Villar, chair of the Senate committee on government corporations and public enterprises, said she noticed that
despite the universality and compulsory nature of PhilHealths coverage, the public, particularly those
belonging to the marginalized sector, are not aware of the agencys health packages especially for kidney
patients.
The senator expressed her dismay at the state health agency as she pointed to the growing prevalence of
chronic kidney disease among Filipinos.
The Department of Health (DOH) has pronounced that kidney diseases, an affliction or complication usually
associated with diabetes, hypertension and glomerulonephritis, is now considered the seventh leading cause
of death in the country.
Citing DOH figures, Villar said around 23,000 Filipinos underwent dialysis due to kidney failure in 2013
which is four times higher than the 4,000 cases recorded in 2004, or a 10 to 15 percent increase a year.
More Filipinos, she said, ought to be educated on how to benefit of PhilHealths hemodialysis treatment
package, which was increased from 45 to 90 sessions per year at P2,500 per session.

Freight forwarders and other firms behind the delivery of balikbayan boxes may expect to pay the Bureau
of Customs (BOC) more with the plan of Commissioner Alberto Lina to increase the duties and taxes for
consolidated shipments.
Reliable sources at the waterfront said Lina initially had approved an increase of the duties and taxes
covering all shipments in a consolidated container from P80,000 to P180,000.
Infuriated by this development, affected freight forwarders, however, complained to Lina and staged a silent
protest.
No one filed an entry for a week, the source told the Manila Bulletin. Maybe that was their way to make
their complaints be heard, he said.
LBC Express Inc., the countrys leading freight forwarder, and Skyland Brokerage Inc., among others firms
were those reportedly opposed to a plan to increase the duties and taxes for consolidated shipments.
A consolidated shipment is shipping a cargo, in which a freight forwarder combines several individuals
consignments to make up a full container load.
As an example, balikbayan boxes sent from abroad are usually consolidated into batches and placed in one
container van aboard a cargo vessel bound for the Philippines.
The source said that the freight forwarders were caught by surprise and are not prepared yet for such increase,
prompting them to appeal their case to Lina.
Vehement, their opposition led Lina to reconsider his other option. He had to relent and charge lower duties
and taxes from his original plan.
From P180,000, he (Lina) decided to lower the collection of duties and taxes to P120,000, the source said.
