500 workers displaced at semirara mine
C. Reference
Manila Bulletin
D. Summary
Around 500 workers were displaced after the government stopped the mining operations of
Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) in Caluya, Antique due to a landslide, which
buried nine of its employees last week.
In a statement, Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said DOLERegion 6 is already profiling the affected workers of the DMCI-owned mining company to
provide them with emergency assistance.
What we will provide the Semirara coal mine workers in terms of welfare and livelihood
assistance is similar to what we provided to the worker-victims of the fire accident at the
rubber slipper facility of Kentex Manufacturing Corporation, Baldoz said.
Among the aid DOLE extended to Kentex victims were livelihood opportunities, employment
facilitation, and other welfare assistance.
Earlier, Baldoz said they will provide similar aid to the families of the nine workers, who were
buried by the landslide.
E. Quotation
Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters. Albert Einstein
F. Analysis
Because of the carelessness of the SMPC this incident happens. This is not the first time the
mining firm had a similar fatal incident. In a research note, DA Market Securities Inc. said this is
the same situation that happened in 2013, when a landslide also occurred at the Semirara mini
site in Caluya town. The landslide trapped 13 miners, of which three personnel were rescued.
G. Recommendations/Suggestions
The government should properly investigate the operations at the mine so that this kind of
incident would never happen again

Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday he would promote the Philippines bid to host the
2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup.
Yes, Im going to Tokyo with the Philippine delegation to help in our bid to host FIBA 2019, he
said in a statement.
Pacquiao, 36, said he would travel next month to the Japanese capital where FIBA would
announce the host.
The basketball-crazy Philippines qualified for last years FIBA World Cup in Spain, finishing 21st.
It faces stiff competition from Asian giant China as host for the 2019 event, according to the
FIBA website.
Pacquiao, who has gained worldwide fame for holding boxing world titles in eight weight
divisions, is also an avid basketball fan.
Last year he controversially signed on as playing coach of a neophyte team in the highlycompetitive Philippine professional basketball league.

playing just for a few minutes in each game despite cheering fans in the bleachers.
Pacquiao has parlayed his boxing fame into a fortune in showbiz, as a commercial endorser
and even in politics, winning election as the congressman of a district in the poverty-stricken
southern Philippines.

Comelecs No Bio, No Boto making headway in malls
C. Reference
Manila Bulletin
D. Summary
The strategy to put up satellite voter registration centers in malls is paying good dividends for
the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
According to Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista, over 16,000 voters trooped to the malls over
the weekend to register under the No Bio, No Boto campaign.
Bautista said this was a big increase if compared to the number of those who registered and
validated their biometrics record in the two previous weeks.
Biometrics data refer to a persons digital photograph, signature and fingerprints in the voter
registration record.
This is a big increase from the first two weekends, said Bautista in a press briefing on
Tuesday.
He said they also noticed that most of those registering were new voters.
There are more new voters registering than those validating. The ratio is about 1 is to 5,
Bautista said.
The Comelec earlier said around 4.3 million voters stand to face disenfranchisement in next
years election because they have no biometric data.
Based on Republic Act 10367 or the Mandatory Biometrics Registration Act of 2013 voters, who
fail to submit for validation prior to the May 2016 elections, shall be deactivated from the
voters list and shall not be allowed to vote.
E. Quotation
The only way to change is to vote. People are responsible. Paul Wellstone
F. Analysis
This kind of strategy will attract more people because the voter registration and validation
process in malls is a lot easier and accessible to all
G. Recommendations/Suggestions
Comelec should also study the proposal to transfer certain voting precincts in malls for the
2016 elections. This will do much to increase voter turnout, decongest public schools and save
on electricity expenses.

considered a sign that our country, Philippines is gradually improving
