Instructions:
In pairs, answer a series of questions. Each section, you have four minutes
to answer all the questions. We will then discuss the answers. At the end
of discussing the answers, for each answer you girls get correct, roll the
dice and tally up your points based on the number you rolled on the dice
(e.g: you rolled six, you get six points). Good Luck, Girls.

ADR = Alternative Dispute Resolution the use of


mediation to solve disputes its cheaper, less time, no
court proceedings a mediator helps to try and solve the
issue between two parties.

Local: lowest court, run by a magistrate, also


known as Magistrates Court, Deal with matters

(small ones), hear matters relating to claims up to
$100,000.

High Court: Highest court in Australia, for federal


matters, ensure lawmakers dont breach
constitution, last court of appeal.

5) There are two main types of law in Australia: criminal and CIVIL
law. In addition, there is an important part of the law called
constitutional law. The constitution is a special document that
outlines how the COUNTRY is to be run. The Australian Constitution
divides power between the Commonwealth and STATE
governments.

1) In Australia laws are made by one of two methods: statute law and
common law. Common law is made by the decisions of JUDGES_.
Where the common and statute laws conflict with each other,
STATUTE law has precedence. Before the Federal Parliament
passes a law, it must first be passed by the House of
REPRESENTATIVES and then by the SENATE. If it successfully
passes both of these houses then it goes to the GOVERNOR
GENERAL for royal ASSENT.

When there is no statute law, the judge makes a decision


based on previous common laws/judge made decisions.

serious cases. They have the role of deciding whether the defendant
is guilty of the charge.
