On October 27th 2016, our group went to PT. Fajar Surya Wisesa Tbk (FajarPaper) to
do a company visit. We did an interview with the person in charge on that day, Mr.
Indra Permana. The purpose of the company visit is we want to know about the CSR
(Corporate Social responsibility) progam doing by FajarPaper.

FajarPaper is a leading packaging paper manufacturer in Indonesia with an installed
capacity of 1,200,000 metric tons per year and a range of products which include
Kraft Liner Board and Corrugated Medium Paper for carton-box packaging and

Coated Duplex Board for display packaging.

FajarPaper was established as a limited liability company under the laws of Indonesia
on February 29, 1988. FajarPaper has been listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange since
December 19, 1994. (FASW.JK).
FajarPaper is a company of the future in terms of its forward-thinking approach to
business, energy conservation and the environment. Not only does every FajarPaper
product begin its life from recycled paper but also the company's five paper machines
are powered by self-sufficient power plants, fueled by clean natural gas.
FajarPaper have five branch brand, they are Fajarmedium, Fajarliner, Fajarboard,
Fajar performamedium, Fajar praimemedium.

What is their CSR & Purpose

According to their company, CSR stand for Corporate Social Responsibilities, it is a
form of their concern to society and environment. Since their company was standing
among the community, it is important to give feedback to the community in the form
of their CSR programs.
Also, because their company is already operated in a big scale, according to the
Indonesias Law, they have to allocate some % of their income for CSR
They said that it is not their marketing strategy. Their intention is to give feedback to
the community. Some of their CSR activities makes their company more acknowledge
by people, but it is purely an indirect effect of the CSR programs, it is not their focus.

Concerns For Environments

FajarPaper is committed to the surrounding community and environment to operate in
responsible and sustainable way. We help to clean up the environment by recycling
waste paper into packaging paper. Everyday, waste paper collectors send the waste
paper /recycled paper into FajarPaper mill. FajarPaper uses around 2,000 tons of
recycled paper daily. By using recycled paper as the major raw material. More than
500 trucks of recycled paper are delivered to the mill everyday. By using recycled
paper, avoids the destruction of forest cover amidst rising concerns over global
warming. While indirectly helping to reduce waste in landfills, the Company also
directly creates value: by providing a source of income among local collectors and
local community.
FajarPaper as one of the major users of recycled paper in Indonesia, in the sense,
contributes to reduce poverty, increase employment and reduce crimes in the
surrounding communities by purchasing recycled paper from the waste paper
collectors.
Community
FajarPaper carries out a range of activities to contribute to the people and
communities of which we are a part. Programmes include:
Donation for Hari Raya Idul Adha and Idul Fitri for the surrounding community.
Donation for the welfare of orphans.
Circumcision for surrounding villages for 160 kids.

Donation in the form of stationary for students at the surrounding schools.

Student scholarships for employee's children.
Blood donation by employees.
Donation for less privileged families.
Other than regular activities, FajarPaper also took part in :
Donation for Tsunami victims in Aceh.
HSBC housing rebuilt program in Yogyakarta.
Standard Chartered "Care for the Blind" program.

PT. Fajar Surya Wisesa Tbk -- Tbk means Terbuka (Open) so their company
already listed in the stock exchange
Their product is the packaging paper, their raw material is 100% from waste paper
( they do recycling)
One of their competitive advantage is their packaging paper not using wood. It is
100% from recycled
Their materials are 50% from domestic and 50% imported. They do import the raw
material because they said they need the fiber contained in the paper waste other
country had. Fiber is important because they are not using wood for their product.
For their company waste, they have a department which control the waste water
treatment of their production. They treat their liquid waste, make sure their water
waste cleaned before it channeled to the river.
Because of that, their main CSR target are people who live alongside the river where
they channeled their waste ( their CSR project reached most of the Kab. Bekasi area)

Conclusion
Through this interview, we know that FajarPaper has try to improve their ability in
doing more CSR. They hopes the CSR will attract more people, so it will make people
recognize about FajarPapers products. The CSR program has brougth some
advantages which their brands has become the main choice for some schools and
offices.
But that it is not their marketing strategy. Their intention is to give feedback to the
community. Some of their CSR activities makes their company more acknowledge by
people, but it is purely an indirect effect of the CSR programs, it is not their focus.

Recommendation
FajarPaper is a good company. Most of their CSR program are good for the society
and environment. They are responsible in doing their operation. We can see from the
way they do their operation cycle that focusing in recycling. They treat the production
waste excellently. They already try not to harm the environment and society.
Their CSR program already help the community welfare and improve the education of
young generation. I suggest the company to continue what they have done to the
community and environment. Also, I really recommend them to increase the amount
of waste paper collected from local collector instead of importing from other country.
