Researchers in communication suggest that many


more feelings and intentions are sent and received
nonverbally than verbally.
Mehrabian and Wiener (1967) suggested that only
7% of message is sent through words, with
remaining 93% sent nonverbal expressions
(depending on author, verbal part goes up to 35%).

Nonverbal cues:
Motivates those on task behaviors and stops off task behaviors.
This allows for more time-on-task which task which leads to more teaching and learning time.
Appropriate to address: talking, daydreaming, playing with supplies, or distracting others.

Teacher gestures
Sign language
Body posture
Facial expressions
Eye contact
Close proximity
Bells/timers
Notes: STOP signs, Quiet critters
Remember to reward students when theyre doing the right thing! Smile, thumbs up, positive sticky note
