November is New York State History Month and

to celebrate the University Club and the University Club

Foundation are co-sponsoring an eclectic mix of fun, interesting, thought-provoking programming throughout the month. Learn
about the city of Troys connection to Louis Comfort Tiffany, get a
glimpse into the lives of 70s and 80s rock icons, travel back in time to the
Hudson River Valley from the civil war and beyond, learn about American
seating design and the Bronson House in Hudson and find out whats new at
the NYS Museum Office of History (find out more below and inside!).

In his latest book, The History of the Hudson River Valley: from the Civil War, Vernon
Benjamin discusses the formation of the great estates of the Valley, including the Rockefellers, Sunnyside, and Olana, and shows us how the turn to the twentieth century brought
a new era of prosperity to the region. Join us for a meet the author reception 6-7 p.m., followed by dinner/presentation. Reception/dinner $40. Books available for purchase. Reservations are required: www.universityclubalbany.com or ellen@universityclubalbany.com.

Duck Dinner was a success right

from the start. An Albany Evening
Journal newspaper account from
1908 called it a roaring good time;
and, according to the 1910 article
below, there was something doing
and lots of good natured fun.

Devin Lander, who was appointed

New York State Historian in May,
will offer an introduction to the new
Office of State History website, an
online resource for those working in
history and allied fields. The goal of
the site is to aggregate and share information on New Yorks history and the
work going on in the field.
A published historian specializing in
post-World War II social and cultural
movements, Lander holds a B.A. in
American History from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh
and an M.A. in Public History from
the University at Albany.
$25-Hot and cold buffet at 12 noon,
program commences at 12:30. Reservations are required. Call 518-4631151; send an email to Ellen at
ellen@universityclubalbany.com; or
at www.universityclubalbany.com.

Duck, obtained completely legally,

is still on the menu, but you can also
opt for Prime Rib if you prefer. The
fun starts at 6:00 p.m. with drinks
(sign) and complimentary hors
doeuvres and steamed clams, then
dinner at 7 p.m. Dont forget about
the crazy frozen turkey raffle! Get
there early to get your tickets.
$26.95, beverages additional. Guests
are welcome. Please make reservations by 11/08 and let us know
whether youd like roast duck or
prime rib. Call the front desk at 518463-1151 or email Ellen directly at
ellen@universityclubalbany.com.

Tammis Groft, Executive Director of

the Albany Institute, will offer an illustrated introduction to two exhibitions - The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design, and
Rock and Roll Icons: Photographs by
Patrick Harbron.
The Art of Seating, presents exceptional American chair designs of particular beauty and historical context
from the early nineteenth century to
the present day.
Rock and Roll Icons features Capital
region resident Patrick Harbron's concert and portrait photography of influential musicians and groups of the
1970's and 1980's. The exhibition features many photographs that have never been published or exhibited.

city in the nation! Find out more and

The slide presentation describes the
work of Louis Comfort Tiffany and

ANNUAL HOLIDAY DINNER BUFFET

Friday, December 16th
TIMELINE - Friday, December 30th

The Membership Committee would

like to welcome Michael Lieberman
to the University Club family. Mr.
Lieberman is the Vice President of
Governmental Affairs for the New
York Credit Union Association and a
2011 graduate of Ohio State University. He was sponsored by Amy Kramer and Colleen Ryan. Welcome!

The Regional Food Bank

has been helping to feed
the poor and hungry in
our communities since
1982. It is the only organization of its
kind in northeastern New York. They
serve hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties and provide over
30 million pounds of food a year to
1,000 agencies.

I hope you will join me in making a

contribution to the Employee Holiday Fund (donation card enclosed
with your billing statement). Many
of our loyal employees are not part
of the service charge distribution and
the fund is a tangible way to thank
them for their care and kindness and
for truly making the club our home
away from home.

The University Club is proud to

partner with the Food Bank again
this year by providing a collection
box in the lobby of the clubhouse.
Throughout the month of November
we will be accepting donations of
non-perishable food items and
checks made payable to Regional
Food Bank of Northeastern New
York. For every $1 donated, the
Regional Food Bank can distribute
$10 worth of food.

Amy Kramer, Vice President

We hope you will help us support

them and our neighbors in need this
holiday season.

SAY THANK YOU

3 original plays presented by Creative

License. Each play takes place on New
Year's Eve in a different era.

In an effort to spur membership growth, the Board of Directors spearheaded the formation of a special ad hoc membership
committee in December 2015, chaired by Board member Teresa Casey. The good news: their efforts paid off and we took
in 18 new members between January and July! The not-so-good news: natural attrition and resignations due to illness,
death, relocation and other changes in circumstances have translated into a net loss of members thus far this year.
The bottom line is revenue from membership fees is necessary to meet operating expenses. Though the clubs staff has
done wonders to economize and reduce costs, many line items remain fixed or are rising. One such cost is the $20,000+
school tax bill. Thanks to the Tax Fund, we were able to pay that on time by the end of September this year. In addition to
monthly membership fees, usage revenue is also essential. Most of our food, beverage and party business occurs between
December and June. The revenues from those months help float the club during the quieter months of July through November. Between the taxes and the annual slowdown in business there is little left in the coffers for end of year operating
expenses.
At our current level of membership, the Board finds it necessary to implement a $225 assessment, split into three installments of $75 each during November, December and January to meet our year-end financial obligations. This is the third
time we have had to implement a year end assessment to cover expenses and in anticipation that this will happen again at
the end of 2017 it has been determined that we will need to increase the monthly membership fees by $20.00 starting in
February. There has not been an increase in monthly fees in almost 10 years. We hope you understand the necessity of
these steps and that neither was undertaken lightly or without deliberation.
Thank you for your continued loyalty and support .
