In assignment 1: Health Promotion/Injury Prevention Teaching


Resource and Analysis Paper I had the chance to explore my own
community and some of the health prevention needs that people in my
own community are asking for. After speaking with public health
nurses in our own hospital I discovered a great need for general health
education and specifically education that related to cardiac wellness
and an understanding of signs and symptoms of high blood pressure.
I furthered my studies and understanding of this issue through this
assignment by developing a teaching strategy and was shocked to find
just how difficult it would be to target this group of people and also to
communicate this information in such a way that they understood its
importance and also how and even if they would commit to making
the lifelong changes required to ensure cardiac health and controlled
blood pressure. In speaking with members of my own family I
discovered that many of them knew they needed to be aware of heart
health and high blood pressure signs and symptoms but they didnt
know what they were. I felt it very enlightening to explore this area
and to apply learning strategies to targeting this specific group.
Fair- I feel that I have reached a level of fair as I have not had a
chance to actively get out into my community to identify learning
needs and to implement a teaching plan in order to address these
needs. I also lacked accurate numbers of clients affected by high blood
pressure as I do not currently have access to such data that targets my
community directly. I feel that through working with community
nurses and having a chance to observe how they implement teaching
strategies and evaluate their effectiveness I cannot rate my proficiency
as good at this time. I feel that after actively participating in
developing a teaching strategy and analyzing a target group alongside
community nurses I will better understand some of the challenges that
they face developing and implementing successful client health
promotion teaching.

I feel that through identifying health needs early it will greatly


promote prevention of health detriments and improve overall quality
of life for clients as well as reducing hospital admissions and cost to
the health care system. Through prevention and education clients will
become more socially aware of their own health and work to reduce
modifiable factors. I feel that through having a strong understanding of
how to educate clients, who to specifically target, and grasping the
concept of objective analysis I can work to increase the quality of life
of my clients, their families, and in a broader spectrum communities as
my life as a student and also beyond into my nursing career.
