Welcome to the 10th-annual Dallas International Film Festival, a production of the Dallas Film Society.
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Festival. While weve continued to evolve as a Festival through the years, our primary mission remains the same: to support
the magic of film as an art form by bringing a diverse program of poignant and thought-provoking films to Dallas, honoring filmmakers worldwide, and promoting our
own local filmmakers on an international stage.
As we celebrate a decade of bringing quality independent films from around the world to Dallas, its exciting to look back on how far weve come.
In only nine years, the Dallas International Film Festival has screened more than 1,680 movies, awarded more than $740,000 in cash/pro-bono prizes, received more
than 11,100 film submissions, and hosted more than 1,500 filmmakers.

North Texas filmmakers and the local film community continue to grow exponentially, producing inspirational and entertaining works, and capturing the attention and
respect of the international cinematic community. We cant wait to see what the next 10 years will bring as the Dallas film community continues to flourish.
We give endless thanks to our hardworking team of DIFF volunteers, our Board of Directors, Festival committees and juries, and our dedicated Festival staff. Without
the enthusiastic commitment of all involved, this 11-day celebration, featuring over 150 film screenings and several in-depth panels, would simply not be possible.
We are also immensely grateful for the philanthropic spirit of our sponsors, donors and Dallas Film Society members. Your generosity directly benefits the artistic
enrichment of Dallas, Texas and beyond.
And of course we must thank the filmmakers, those passionate individuals who work tirelessly to channel their creativity into films that inspire, excite, unnerve and amaze.
We welcome you all, and we look forward to seeing you at this years special 10th Anniversary celebration of the Dallas International Film Festival.
With gratitude,

2016 MAVERICK AWARD

THE DALLAS MAVERICK AWARD HONORS NOTED AUTEURS AND GROUNDBREAKING FILMMAKERS WHOSE UNIQUE CINEMATIC VOICES CHALLENGE OUR
NOTIONS OF MAINSTREAM CINEMA.

MONTE HELLMAN

Our inaugural honoree, director, editor and producer Monte Hellmann, has a career that spans six
decades. He has exemplified cutting-edge filmmaking across multiple genres, working with budgets,
from high-to-low, and with casts featuring stars to complete unknowns. Two films in particular, THE
SHOOTING (1966) and TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (1971), are examples of Hellmans rare ability to
take two vastly different genresthe Western and the road movieand deconstruct them, stripping
them down, and making them singular entries in what is a remarkably diverse filmography.
Hellman got his start working with legendary producer Roger Corman, making his debut with BEAST
FROM HAUNTED CAVE (1959). He later delivered another of his more notable films for Corman,
RIDE THE WHIRLWIND (1966), and further cemented his reputation as a director with a singular
and influential style with both image and performance. After a 20-year hiatus, Hellman came back
to the big screen with a vengeance with the visionary neo-noir, ROAD TO NOWHERE (2010).
Monte Hellman will accept his Maverick Award on April 22 at DFS Honors.

Black Rock Continuation High School, an alternative school for teens at risk of dropping
out, is the last chance these students have to receive a high school diploma. Principal
Vonda Viland and her incredible staff of educators are determined to help these
students, giving them consistent support, teaching life skills and sharing advice so
they can meet their shared goal of graduating. THE BAD KIDS empathetically shares
the stories of these teens struggling to escape dysfunction and the inspiring staff who
believe in them.

Filmmaker Patrick Shen creates a comprehensive and thought-provoking discussion

of how noise impacts our daily life. From the early religious aspects of solitude to John
Cages seminal silent composition 433, silence has always fascinated society and
played an important role in our humanity. As our lives become modernized with technology, noise has taken a larger toll on our wellness and behavior. Like a deep breath
of fresh air, IN PURSUIT OF SILENCE challenges you to experience the world in a new,

From the brilliant mind of Werner Herzog comes his newest vehicle for exploration, a
playful yet chilling examination of our rapidly interconnecting online lives. Herzog
documents a treasure trove of interviews with individuals ranging from Internet pioneers
to victims of wireless radiation, whose anecdotes and reflections weave together a
complex portrait of our brave new world. For all of its detailed analysis, LO AND BEHOLD,

Joe Berlingers latest documentary captures internationally renowned life and business
strategist and best-selling author, Tony Robbins in a revelatory cinma vrit film.
Granted never before seen access, the film goes behind the scenes of his mega oncea-year seminar Date With Destiny, attended by over 2,500 people, to give an insider
look at how one man can affect millions. TONY ROBBINS: I AM NOT YOUR GURU,
unveils the inner-workings of this life-altering and controversial event, the zealous
participants and the man himself.

When Tom and his wife host a dinner party to celebrate his birthday, one of their guests
brings an intriguing date named Alice. Tom is convinced he knows her, but she refuses
to acknowledge their past history. When Alice makes a hasty exit, Tom follows her down
the rabbit hole and into the night, where they explore the freedom to shed ones skin
in the anonymity of the big city. What ensues is an all-night odyssey with two characters,
one needing to make a change in his life, the other questioning how to stop changing.

With 1980s Dublin mired in recession, Conors parents move him from a comfortable
private school to a rough inner-city public school where the scrappy 14-year-old forms
a band. Mentored by his older brother, a dropout whos hip to cool tunes, Conor starts
to compose lyrics and the glam-ish band finds its no covers groove. Renaming himself
Cosmo, he convinces the mysterious, ber-cool Raphina to star in their music videos
(and tries to win her heart in the process).

conduit for him to understand his feelings and interpret reality. With an arsenal of
narratives at his disposal, Owen rises to meet the challenges of adulthood in this moving

Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel, HIGH-RISE centers on a young
doctor, Robert Laing, who moves into a new luxury apartment seeking anonymity. The
buildings eccentric tenants let off steam through endless drink-and-drug induced
partying. Sitting literally atop this insular society in his penthouse is the high-rise's
architect and owner, Mr. Royal. As Robert settles into his new abode, the tower and
its social complexities begin to take over his life. What starts out as competitive hijinks
takes a turn toward tribalism and anarchy.

Natalie Portman makes her directorial debut with this adaptation of Israeli author Amos
Ozs memoir. The years leading up to the creation of the state of Israel are characterized
by escalating tensions between Jews and Arabsconflicts that mirror the troubled
marriage of Amos's refugee parents. The narrative is told from the perspective of young
Amos, but largely revolves around his mother Fania, an intellectual raised in privilege
who struggles to accept her adult life as a poor newcomer in a fledgling land.

Director William Kaufman transforms Dallas into a post-apocalyptic wasteland in the

action-packed survival horror DAYLIGHTS END. After a mysterious infection transforms
people into blood-thirsty creatures, a drifter bent on vengeance comes across a band
of survivors desperate to escape the city. With the outside threats growing, will he help

is of the essence, because in this world, things go more than bump in the night.

On August 1st, 1966, a sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the University of
Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes. When the
gunshots were finally silenced, the toll included 16 dead, three dozen wounded, and a
shaken nation left trying to understand. TOWER reveals the action-packed untold

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

USA, 1982, 115 min., Color

After being inadvertently left behind while on a mission to earth, an extra terrestrial is
left to fend for himself. Ending up in the suburbs, he is taken in by 10-year-old Elliott.
The two eventually develop a psychic connection, which leads Elliott to discover E.T's
health is declining, along with his own. In order to save themselves, they must find a
way for E.T. to "phone home," as they also fight to conceal his existence from a group
of menacing scientists and government officials who wish to quarantine the alien for
experimental purposes.

FAR FROM HEAVEN

USA/France, 2002, 107 min., Color

Every shot in FAR FROM HEAVEN is a portrait that echoes the emotional state of its
characters. The interior battle of Frank combatting with his exterior desires is fabulously
projected with the vibrant lighting in the all men's bar, while Cathys world is changing
with the colors of the leaves in her autumn garden. FAR FROM HEAVEN is many things,
a social commentary, a lesson in film history, a time capsule, but above all it is a
beautiful picture. Cinematographer and 2016 Dallas Star Award Honoree Ed Lachman
will be in attendance to discuss his work on FAR FROM HEAVEN and his other films.

The most unbelievable aspect to this far-fetched story is that its all actually true. THE
LIBERATORS examines the case of the Quedlinburg Treasures, a collection of medieval
artifacts that went missing in Germany at the end of World War II despite having been
tightly guarded. Willi Korte has made a career out of recovering stolen art and this
film documents his indefatigable journey in tracing these lost relics. Stellar production
values, excellent historical footage and expert testimony add rich layers to this
outrageous and riveting tale.

SIGNS OF HUMANITY
USA, 2016, 90 min., Color

For years, advertising guru and SMU professor Willie Baronet has been fascinated by
the signs the homeless use to encourage help. His artistic eye and agency background
saw more than a plea he saw art, he saw life, he saw humanity. Embracing a desire
to create a HeART project, Willie drives cross-country for a month and buys signs from
the homeless he meets along the way. SIGNS OF HUMANITY follows Willie on this
journey as he collects signs, talks to the homeless and seeks to discover, what does
home mean to you? A portion of the proceeds from this special presentation screening
will be donated to The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, a shelter here in Dallas.

COLLECTIVE:UNCONSCIOUS

A FAT WRECK

Its common for a film to have onemaybe twodream sequences that add clarity
to the broader narrative. COLLECTIVE:UNCONSCIOUS is a film made up of five dream
sequences sans the broader narrative. Each of the five dreams is an adaptation of
a real dream had by one of the five filmmakers. By bringing their own dreams to life
in COLLECTIVE:UNCONSCIOUS, the directors transport viewers to a place between
sleep and consciousness.

A Dallas film about a 1990s California punk rock record label, A FAT WRECK is Shaun
Colns homage to Fat Mike and Fat Wreck Chords. The label was home to edgy punk
bands including Rise Against, Lagwagon, and Fat Mikes NOFX. Coln weaves the FAT
WRECK story from interviews, performance footage and a soundtrack packed with
punky riffs and melodic choruses. The story embraces conflict as much as it does
music, showing Fat Mike and his compatriots as they are, true punks.

Filmmaker Livia Ungur begins her mock documentary, HOTEL DALLAS, with a tour of
Southfork Ranch. An absolute gem, the film has everything from the perspective that
the TV show Dallas saved Romania in the 1980s, to the fact that oilbut not the Black
Gold kindbrought liquidity to tycoons there. From Romania to Manhattan to Dallas,
Ungur and Sherng-Lee Huang weave together a tale through interviews, music videos,
and downright good questions about the nature of being.

ORION is a look into one mans journey of self-discovery as he becomes the champion
for the dead world in which he inhabits. Auteur Asiel Norton uses both Pagan and
Christian imagery, and creates film chapters akin to Wes Andersons. With haunting
locations, wrought from the stark background of Detroit, nature itself becomes an
obstacle the four main characters must overcome as they wrestle with one another
in this blood-and-lust driven world.

Ido Haars documentary traces the internet-assisted, cross-continental collaboration

between two very different musicians: Princess Shaw, a young black woman in the
American South who posts her songs on the web; and Israeli viral-video artist Kutiman,
whose YouTube-sampling compositions have earned millions of online hits. The
audience observes as Kutiman is drawn to the postings of Princess, then the film
shifts to Princess performing in New Orleans. Kutiman and Princess are fascinating
talents on their own, but when their music comes together, it's pure magic.
