Single Subject Daily Lesson Plan: Katie Koehler

Lesson Title/Subject:

Yoga Background and Practice

Standards:
7.2.5 Compare and contrast the effectiveness of practicing skills as a whole and
practicing skills in smaller parts.
7.1.6 Demonstrate body management and object-manipulation skills needed for
successful participation in introductory adventure/outdoor activities.
7.5.2 Accept responsibility for individual improvement.
Purpose/Rationale:
The purpose of this lesson is to improve the students knowledge on yoga and increase
their skills by practicing their balance, strength, and coordination. The students will also
work on self-responsibility and accountability.
Background Knowledge:
By having each student fill out a KWL chart in the beginning of class, I will be able to get
more of an understanding on what the class understands about yoga. I will also do
Thumbs up/ Thumbs down to judge their feelings and thoughts about yoga.

This article will be sent with the students home to read and will analyze it then come
prepared to discuss it the following day.
For an assessment/activity, the students will do a graffiti wall to describe the academic
language used. At the end of the lesson, there will be a matching worksheet with the
vocab words being used throughout the lesson as more of a formal assessment.

How does yoga improve fitness level and a healthy choice for the future?

will be looking for:
Student journal entry on comparing
and critiquing two yoga poses when it
comes to strength, success rate,
stability, and difficulty. I will read the
journals and note each students
opinions/decisions on poses chose.
Students will take turns performing 10
different yoga poses while their
partner will state which pose they are
performing. I will be looking and
listening to see if the poses being
performed match the pose said.

participation and success (D) during
the lesson on a sheet of paper (C)
which will be turned in at the end of
class (D).

Fist to five self-rating scale on how well


each student thought they did. Also, a
ticket out the door which has three
items the student did well during the

of responsibility. I will be mentally
noting the overall class rating scale on
success and will report the ticket out
the door similarities/differences the
next class period.

Materials and Safety Precautions (if applicable):


Materials:
Yoga mats -one for each student.
Balance puzzles-one for each student.
One speaker with yoga music.
White board to map out the lesson.
Pictures of each yoga pose.
Safety Precautions:
Make sure everyone has a yoga mat to stand on so they feel more safe and
comfortable while performing yoga poses.
Be positive, encouraging, and respectful.
Be sure to ask how each student is doing so nobody has hypertension on any
muscles.
Accommodations for special needs, advanced and English language
learners:

Accommodations will be made for each student depending on their ability to perform
the task. I have easier and more difficult modifiers to suit the needs of each child. I will
also have pictures up of each pose and written directions on a whiteboard. I will also
verbally be describing each pose and set up during the whole lesson.

Procedures
Warm Up:
From one side of the court to the other.
-Jogging
-Skipping
-Side Shuffles with raised arms without clicking heels together and not crossing arms in
the air
-Lunge and twist
-Swing your leg out and touch it with your opposite hand
-Jogging
-Power Walking
Everyone stands in a circle with one balance puzzle with two or three points of contact
to touch the mat with. Have everyone do whatever their mat has shown on it and hold
for 10-20 seconds. Rotate to the next mat and repeat.
Focus Lesson (Teacher does):
Introduction:
Yoga is about 5,000 years old. Yoga means union or discipline and is literally
defined as meaning to yoke or to join the small personal self to some much larger self. It
was brought to the U.S. in 1880. Between 1930-1960 people were not interested but it
started being shown on TV and people found that yoga was not so strange and was
physical. There were 4 individuals who really helped yoga become mainstream in
America, Indra Devi, B.K.S. Iyengear, Patthabbi Jois, and T.K.V. One opened a studio in
Hollywood attracting movie stars and another went to Michigan and taught in the YMCA.
All four instructed yoga across the U.S. In the 1970s scientists started observing and
finding out how yoga does affect the body. They made remarkable discoveries finding
that yoga does relieve stress, alleviate chronic pain and can reverse coronary artery
disease. Athletes started incorporating yoga into their practices. Hatha yoga is what is
most popularly practiced. It has become one of the nations favorite form of lifetime
fitness.
Modeling:
Yoga helps with strength, flexibility and balance. It is used for relaxation,
meditation, and exercise. Yoga is an exercise that can be done for a lifetime and falls
under the LPAM model. People of all ages can participate in yoga. Yoga helps people
sleep better, have more energy, and improve posture. There are classes offered at gyms
and yoga studios. Yoga can be found on TV and YouTube. People can do yoga anywhere
and no equipment is needed. Teachers use yoga to help students who have stressful
upcoming events in class like finals or tests. Yoga is great inside or outside and works
great for a raining day activity. Yoga improves the functioning of the respiratory,
circulatory, and digestive systems.

Guided Instruction (Teacher and Students do together):


Repeat after me type instruction where I do each pose again, but this time the
students do it with me. During each pose, I will walk around and assist students who are
struggling or need a modification.
Reassure the students that it is ok to use an easier variation. Some of these poses are
very difficult and take time to accomplish successfully. Rate fist to five after each pose
to check for difficulty.

Collaborative Learning (Students do it together):


At this point, I will choose a few students who were successful in each pose and can
describe each pose to be group leaders. I will allow the students to get into small groups
and practice the poses taught.
After a little while of practicing, I will have the students find a partner who was not in
their group and practice/assess their skills and knowledge of each pose.

Independent Learning (Students do it alone):


During this stage, I will have my students start their journal entry. This entry should be
more of a reflection on their success, thoughts, and feelings. During this entry, I will also

have my students choose two yoga poses where they would compare and critique each
one in the degree of strength needed, difficulty, success rate, and stability of their own
performance. (DOK 4)
I would also pass out the matching forms that they need to complete for homework and
return the following day.

They also need to turn in their journals before they leave so I can read, comment,
and make notes to report for the next class period.
A-Z Glossary of Academic Language:
1. Balance-an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to
remain upright and steady
2. circulatory system- organs and tissues, including the heart, blood, blood
vessels.
3. Coordination-the organization of the different elements of a complex body
or activity so as to enable them to work together effectively.
4. Digestive system- system in which digested food is acted upon physical
and chemical means to provide body with nutrients
5. Downward Dog-a yoga pose in which the body assumes an inverted V
shape, with the hands and feet on the floor, and the buttocks pointing
upward.
6. LPAM-lifetime physical activity model
7. Meditate-think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time, in silence or
with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of
relaxation.
8. Navasana-boat pose where you sit on your bottom and lift your legs up into
the air bringing your arms straight out in front of you.
9. Respiratory system-system which oxygen is taken into the body and an
exchange of oxygen and carbon-dioxide takes place,
