Example of a Piping Route created by using parts from outside the

Standard Parts Library

The purpose of this document is to provide information on how to create a piping route
by using pipe and fitting files that exist outside the standard parts library 1.
Pipe or Fitting File Preparation Steps:
1. First create a SE Part file that represents a pipe or a fitting.
2. Use the PreparePipingComponents.exe utility that is delivered with the SE setup in
the Piping Route\Piping Utility folder to create the appropriate coordinate systems
and variables within this part file. Now this part file is ready with the necessary
attributes to be used as a pipe or fitting within the piping route.
3. Some sample pipes and fittings are provided in the ANSI and DIN folders within
the Piping Route folder. Note that the PreparePipingComponents.exe utility has
already been used to create the necessary attributes within these files.
Piping Route Placement Workflow:
4. Let us create a piping route using the sample pipe and Butt fittings from within the
Piping Route\ANSI folder.
5. Start SE, create an ASSEMBLY file, enter the XpresRoute environment and create a
path as shown below:

6. Start the Piping Route command.

1

Note that you can prepare a piping route with the following workflows:
1. All pipes and fittings coming from standard parts library OR
2. All pipes and fitting coming from outside the standard parts library OR
3. Some pipe and fittings coming from standard parts library and some pipe and fittings coming from
outside the standard parts library
This document only demonstrates the workflow #2. However workflow #1 and #3 are similar.

7. On the Piping Options dialog, set the option to Browse for pipes and Browse for
fittings.

8. We will create a piping route containing 4 inch diameter pipes. So, browse and
select the Pipe_4_in.par from within the Piping Route\ANSI\Pipe folder. Once
done, click OK on the Piping Options dialog to close it.
9. In the Select Path Step, select the entire path and click Accept.

10. In the Assign Fittings/Attributes step, select the first vertex as shown below.

11. Browse and select the Butt_Elbow90_4_in.par file from the Piping
Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt folder. This will place a 90 deg elbow at that vertex.

12. Click on the Assign Fittings/Attributes step and select the second vertex as shown
below.

13. Browse and select the Butt_Tee_4_in.par file from the Piping
Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt folder. This will place a Tee fitting at that vertex.

14. Click on the Assign Fittings/Attributes step and select the third vertex as shown
below.

15. Browse and select the Butt_Cross_4_in.par file from the Piping
Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt folder. This will place a Cross fitting at that vertex.

16. Similarly place the fittings at the remaining vertices of the piping route as shown
below.

17. Click the Preview button to create the pipes.

18. Click Finish button and complete the command.

Piping Route Edit Workflow:
19. Now lets edit this pipe route to replace some 4 inch pipes by 2 in pipes and then
replace fittings as appropriate.
20. Select the piping route from the pathfinder, right mouse button click and select the
Edit Definition command from the short cut menu.

21. Click the Assign Fittings / Attributes button and enter this step.

22. Select the four path segments as shown below:

23. Click on the Pipe Attributes button to enter this step.

24. The Piping Attributes dialog is shown. We will replace the selected 4 inch diameter
pipes with 2 inch diameter pipes. Browse and select the Pipe_2_in.par from within
the Piping Route\ANSI\Pipe folder. Once done, click OK on the Piping Attributes
dialog to close it.

25. Click the Preview button to see the replaced pipes as shown below.

Also, notice that a warning dialog is shown to indicate that the highlighted T fitting is
invalid because the diameter of this fitting does not match the pipe diameter.
26. Now we will replace the existing fittings with reducer fittings to match the pipe
diameters.
27. Click the Browse button. Browse and select the
Butt_Tee_Reducer_4x4x2_in.par file from the Piping Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt
folder. This will replace the current Tee fitting with a Reducer Tee fitting.

Also, notice that a warning dialog is shown to indicate that the highlighted Cross
fitting is invalid because the diameter of this fitting does not match the pipe diameter.
28. Click the Browse button. Browse and select the
Butt_Cross_Reducer_4x4x2x2_in.par file from the Piping Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt
folder. This will replace the current Cross fitting with a Reducer Cross fitting.

Also, notice that a warning dialog is shown to indicate that the highlighted Elbow
fitting is invalid because the diameter of this fitting does not match the pipe diameter
29. Click the Browse button. Browse and select the
Butt_Elbow90_Reducer_4x2_in.par file from the Piping Route\ANSI\Fitting\Butt
folder. This will replace the current Elbow fitting with a Reducer Elbow fitting.

30. Click Preview and Finish buttons to complete the edit workflow.

31. This concludes the demonstration to use the pipe and fittings from outside the
standard part library in a piping route. You may similarly work with other sample
pipes and fittings delivered with the SE setup.
