efficient pump. Determine the external load F that the hydraulic cylinder can sustain in the regenerative mode
(spring-centered position of the DCV)? Pump discharge pressure is 1000 psi. Take frictional pressure losses
in to account. The following data are applicable:
Kinematic viscosity of oil = 0,001 ft2/s

Question 14: (1 Mark) A system has a 2,44 in3/rev displacement pump driven at 1730 rpm. Anverage system
pressure is 930 psi. It is estimated that the system is 65% efficient, meaning that 35% of the hydraulic energy
delivered by the pump is converted to heat energy. The overall heat transfer coefficient for the reservoir is
estimated to be U = 5 Btu/ft2.h.F . It is desired that the oil temperature not exceed 140 0F on a day when the
ambient temperature is 950F. If half the total heat generated is dissipated from the lines and the surface of the
components, what size reservoir is required to dissipate the remaning heat?

Question 15: (1 Mark) A motor is required to accelerate from zero to 500 rpm in 2 s with the following
machine parameters:
Load torque T = 80 N.m
Coulomb friction Tcf = 10 N.m
Displacement D m = 6 10-6 m3/rad
Rotary inertia J = 0,5 kg.m2
Viscous coefficient B v = 0,04 m/rad.s-1
Flow losses maybe neglected.
a. Calculate the pressure differential required?
b. If the motor is driven at a constant speed of 500 rpm, calculate the power and flow rate needed?
Question 16: (1 Mark) An electrohydraulic servo system contains the following characteristics:
Gsv = (0,15 in3/s)/mA. The servo valve saturates at 300 mA to provide a maximum fluid flow of 45 in3/s.
Gcyl = 0,2 in/in3. The cylinder piston area equals 5 in2, allowing for a maximum velocity of 9 in/s.
Cylinder stroke is 6 in.
H = 4 V/in. Thus, the maximum feedback voltage is 24.
Volume of oil under compression = 50 in3.
Weight of load = 1000 lb.

System deadband = 4 mA.

Bulk modulus of oil = 175 000 lb/in2.
Determine the system accuracy?
Question 17: (0,5 Mark) For the circuit of Figure 2, what happens to the cylinders in each case?
a. Valve V1 is actuated and held.
b. Valve V1 is released and valve V2 is actuated and held. Valves V3 and V4 are sequence valves.

Question 20: (1 Mark) A car lift is to be power by a hydro-pneumatic cylinder. The total load that the
cylinder has to lift is 1,2 tonnes through a height of 2 m. The lift must be capable of being hydraulically
locked in any position. Design a suitable system using a standard size pneumatic cylinder to raise the lift. The
effective hydraulic pressure at the cylinder is 0,4 the air supply pressure at the air-oil interface. Draw a
suitable manually operated circuit and calculate the size of a suitable standard pneumatic cylinder? The air
supply pressure is 7 bar maximum. If an air compressor having a delivery of 25 l/s f.a.d is used to supply the
system, estimate the time taken for the lift to fully extend under maximum load conditions?
