What makes people unique?
When does people become unique? When they have lots of money? When they
have expensive rides? Neither of them. Until just recently, Ive thought people who play the
rugby are always tough and wild; stereotype. Though, one of my friend made me think
outside of box. Ive never saw that cutest rugby player in my life. First impression of him
wasnt really superior, tanned brown skin, bulky arms, rough looking and massive tattoo
made me feel little scare. Therefore I thought he was just typical rugby player. However, his
characteristic wasnt match to appearance, his tenderness and kind tone surprised me first,
and his cutest items such as like character pajama, shocked me once again. That distinctive
reversal gave me indelible impression, and he became a unique man. I agree with the idea
that people become unique when they breaks others prejudice. When person breaks others
prejudice, that person will be stamped on others memory, which means that person will
make an indelible impression. The person become stamp on others because they are
unique. Breaking prejudice do make people unique but some people agree with the idea that
stereotype itself can make people unique. Their opinion is stereotypes are not always about
negative, it can be positive also, such as like, all the Asians are good at math, or oldest
always know better. And if you are Asian or oldest, you will become unique around the
others. In my two ISU pieces which is Robinson Crusoe and 2 years vacation, and reference
from the book discussions.
Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe display that breaking prejudice makes
people unique by using the native character call Friday. For instance, Daniel Defoe provide
Fridays very vibrant personality:

For never man had a more faithful, loving, sincere servant than Friday
(333, Daniel Defoe)
Native are represented as barbarous and savage species back then (18th century).
However Friday was different. Unlike other natives in novel, Friday was active, vigorous and
colorful man, and that shows the uniqueness of Friday. Daniel broke Robinsons, actually
readers stereotype. Stereotype that all the natives should be savage. Friday broke the our
stereotype and become special, which is unique. Bulk of the people defines others as soon
as they sees, and this definition includes anyone. If something that you took it for granted
has unjust. First youll distrust, but as soon as you accept the fact, unjust will become
unusual; unique, if anything.
One character has become unique by accepting the unjust. In Heart of Darkness,
Joseph Conrad was using the perspective change of character call Marlow to show that
native wasnt barbarous at all,
It was unearthly, and the men wereNo, they were not inhuman.
Well, you know, that was the worst of itthis suspicion of their not being
inhuman. It would come slowly to one. They howled and leaped, and spun,
and made horrid faces; but what thrilled you was just the thought of their
humanity like yoursthe thought of your remote kinship with this wild
and passionate uproar. Ugly. Yes, it was ugly enough; but if you were man
enough you would admit to yourself that there was in you just the faintest
trace of a response to the terrible frankness of that noise, a dim suspicion
of there being a meaning in it which youyou so remote from the night of
first agescould comprehend. (58, Conrad)
This quote shows very strong connection with Robinson Crusoes native
character; Friday. Just like Friday, natives in Heart of Darkness broke Marlows
stereotype, and changed Marlows perspective in positive way. The difference with
Robinson Crusoe is that Natives wasnt unique one, Marlow was the unique one by

changing his perspective. Marlow was the only one who has changed his perspective
to the natives, and the word only influence Marlows identity to unique.
From the Book Conversation, Yeonjun said; if you can control your rage, you became
unique. His opinion was that the great part of people is suppressing their own feeling, such
as fury, sorrow, or even bliss. However those expresses are from small issues, when it
comes to instinctive emotion, it is impossible to disguise the instinct. Thus if you can disguise
the instinct, you become unique. Its hard to conceal our basic instinct, such as greed, lust,
gluttony, and especially wrath. Since, the strongest emotion is wrath. For instance, lets say
your dog has cop it, first of all, you feel sorrow, and as soon as you think about the murderer
you get furious. Another example, you draw a salary, again first of all you feel pleasure, but
your friend earn more salary than you, of course you get furious again. Any of emotion can
be turn into wrath, but opposite round doesnt work. Therefore, if youre able to control your
anger, you become unique. I chose his idea because Ive found the connection between
Yeonjun and my idea. Because one who can control their anger can call as one who broke
others prejudice.
In 2 Years of Vacation by Jules Verne, also used the idea of prejudice.
However topic was similar but idea was little different. Vernes opinion is that
prejudice itself makes people unique. For example, Verne used character Gordon to
show the uniqueness of prejudice itself,
"That name? ... Briant had responded, but the wisest of all ...
our
Comrade Gordon! Yes ... Yes ... Hurrah for Gordon!!!
Gordon first wanted to refuse the honor that awarded him, holding more
than order to organize. However, thinking of the trouble that passions
almost as ardent in these young boys as if they had been men, could
give rise in the future, he said that his authority would be useless! And

that's how Gordon was proclaimed head of the little colony of the island
Chairman. (Verne 186)
In Vernes opinion, Gordon has become leader of the group because he was
oldest. It might not because he was oldest but the direct reason was age. Bettermost
of people think olders always come up with better idea and knowledge from their
experience. Therefore everyone chose Gordon to be a leader because of more
experience. Which means, everyone have stereotype that oldest always come up
with better idea, and that makes Gordon unique.
Vernes opinion seems right but I dont agree with this idea. Stereotype might
make people unique but it has too many blot to be unique. What if younger
generation has better and fresher idea then orders, than orders cant be unique. In
my opinion, stereotype doesnt make people unique. Correctly, it take away our
uniqueness. Stereotype groups the people together, for example, asians. Most of
people think asians are good at math and game, and demonstrate the group by
stereotype of asians. Therefore, all of the asian becomes good at math and game,
even though they are not. For instance, Korea had controversy with Gang-nam
Station issue for while. The cause of case was this. One Korean women has
murdered by 34 years old men, who were stakeout in the ladies restroom for a hour.
This issue can be seen as ordinary murder, but typical stereotyped Koreans didnt
thought as ordinary murder. They were saying this issue is about male misogynistic.
Korea has very weird stereotype, which all the man are Latent Criminal. They are
grouping the man in Latent Criminal even though they are not,
If she was killed just for being a woman, then Im also just one more person who
is lucky to be alive on this street (Hankyoreh)

Criminals are criminal, and mans are man, nothing is strange with this idea.

Hence, dont stuck it in the closet and denying everything by what you seeing.
Try to think outside the box. Try to see people in many different perspective. Then
you will become or see the unique one.

What makes people unique?
