PROSE LESSON 3:

ON THE RULE OF THE ROAD

Question Answers: (for all 4 questions)

A. The essay On the Rule of the Road is written by A.G. Gardiner. He was a famous journalist and
essayist.
On the Rule of the Road is a debate about the need to strike balance between individual liberty and
social order. Once, a lady was walking in the middle of the road. She didnt care about the traffic and
the danger. Someone told her that she should walk on the footpath. The lady angrily replied that she
has freedom to walk anywhere she wants. She did not realise that if others also broke rules like her,
there would be accidents.
To enjoy freedom, we should not disturb others. For example, playing loud music at night would
disturb the sleeping neighbours. But we have many other freedoms. A person is free to eat what he
wants, dress how he wants, marry any one he wants, etc.
