Song: Catch a Wave - Beach Boys

Name: Period: Date: 10/10/16

Wave Types
Essential Question: What waves are important to me?
Questions/Main
Ideas:

Mechanical
Waves:
Meh-caneh-cal

Notes:

Requires a medium to transfer energy from one

location to another.
Examples:
1. Waves in the ocean require the water.
2. Waves in a slinky require the slinky coils.
3. Waves in a stadium wave require the people.

What other
types of
mechanical
waves can you
think of?

Longitudinal
Wave:
Lon-jehtood-en-al

*Parallel: side
by side and
having the
same distance
between.

THINK ABOUT IT!

A wave in which the disturbance in the medium is
moving in the same direction the wave is moving.
[Parallel to]
No motion up and down
The wave in the slinky is going from left to right and
so are the coils in the slinky (both go left to right).
Examples: sound waves, slinky waves, pressure
waves.

Compression:

Com-prehshun

Rarefaction:
Rarefaction

Where parts of a medium (slinky) are closer together

than normal

Where parts of a medium (slinky) are farther apart

than normal.

Slinky
Time!

In your group, try to make a longitudinal

wave with the slinky.
Questions to discuss with group:
1. Is the wave being ABSORBED,
TRANSMITTED, OR
REFLECTED?
How can you tell?
2. Can you identify the parts of the
slinky that show compression and
rarefaction?

Transverse
Wave:

Transverse

*Perpendicular
: when 2 lines
meet to make a
90-degree
angle.

When the wave is moving one way (left to right)

and the medium is moving perpendicular to the
wave (up and down).
The wave is going from left to right BUT the motion
of the slinky is up and down.

Time! transverse wave with the slinky.

ABSORBED,
TRANSMITTED, OR
REFLECTED?

Sound
Waves:

Disturbances (waves) in the air molecules that set off chain

reactions until we receive the waves in our ears.

Surface
Wave:

A wave that travels along the surface of a medium.

Mechanical wave: requires a medium.
Have characteristics of both a longitudinal wave and a
transverse wave (back and forth and up and down).
- Creates a circular motion underneath the surface.

Transferring
Energy:

Energy is transferred NOT matter.

Rope wave?
Slinky wave?
Stadium wave?
Sound wave?
Jell-O wave?
MEDIUMS TRANSFER ENERGY, NOT THE MATTER
THE MATERIAL THE MEDIUM IS MADE OUT OF!

doesnt move and the energy does)
