LOAISA

Garca Jofre de Loasa was a 16th century Spanish


explorer ordered by king Charles I of Spain to command
an expedition to Asia, known as the Loasa expedition,
which in 1525 was sent by the western route to colonize
the Spice Islands in the East Indies, thus crossing the
Atlantic and Pacific oceans. More than 450 men were
aboard, including different kinds of trades and
administrative staff, intended to establish a permanent
Spanish settlements in the Spanish East Indies.

CABOT
John Cabot was an Italian navigator and explorer whose
1497 discovery of parts of North America under the
commission of Henry VII of England is commonly held to
have been the first European encounter with the mainland
of North America since the Norse Vikings visits to Vinland
in the eleventh century. The official position of the
Canadian and United Kingdom governments is that he
landed on the island of Newfoundland.

lvaro de Saavedra Cern was one of the Spanish
explorers in the Pacific Ocean. It is unknown the exact
date and place of his birth, but he was born in the late
15th century or early 16th century in Spain. Hernn
Corts was his relative, whom he accompanied to Mexico
in 1526.

KING FELIPE
Ruy Lpez de Villalobos was a Spanish explorer who sailed
the Pacific from Mexico to establish a permanent foothold
for Spain in the East Indies, which was near the Line of
Demarcation between Spain and Portugal according to the
Treaty of Saragossa in 1529. Villalobos gave the
Philippines their name, after calling them Las Islas
Filipinas in honor of the Infante of Asturias at the time,
Philip II of Spain.

Miguel Lpez de Legazpi also known as El Adelantado and


El Viejo (The Elder), was a Spanish navigator and governor
who established the first Spanish settlement in the East
Indies when his expedition crossed the Pacific Ocean from
the Viceroyalty of New Spain in modern-day Mexico, and
founded Cebu on the Philippine Islands in 1565. He was
the first Governor-General of Spanish East Indies which
included the Philippines and other Pacific archipelagos,
namely Guam and the Marianas Islands. After obtaining
peace with various indigenous tribes, Miguel Lpez de
Legazpi made Manila the capital of the Spanish East
Indies in 1571. The capital of the province of Albay in the

SALCEDO

Juan de Salcedo was a Spanish conquistador. He was born in


Mexico in 1549 and he was the grandson of Miguel Lpez de
Legazpi and brother of Felipe de Salcedo. Salcedo was one of the
soldiers who accompanied the Spanish colonization of the
Philippines in 1565. He joined the Spanish military in 1564 for their
exploration of the East Indies and the Pacific, at the age of 15. In
1569, Salcedo led an army of about 300 soldiers along with Martn
de Goiti for their conquest of Manila. Salcedo explored the
northern regions of the Philippines with a force of about 80
soldiers in 1571, where he traveled to Batangas, Zambales and
the Ilocos region and established several Spanish municipalities. In
1574, Salcedo traveled back to Manila, after a war had erupted
against 3,000 Chinese sea pirates led by Limahong who had
besieged the Spanish settlements. Salcedo, and his army of 600
soldiers re-occupied the settlements and pursued the Chinese

TREATY OF
ZARAGOSA

The Treaty of Zaragoza also referred to as the capitulation
of Zaragoza was a peace treaty between Spain and
Portugal signed on 22 April of 1529 by King John III and
the Emperor Charles V, in the spanish city of Zaragoza.
The treaty defined the areas of Spanish and Portuguese
influence in Asia to resolve the "Moluccas issue", when
both kingdoms claimed the Moluccas islands for
themselves, considering it within their exploration area
established by the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. The
conflict sprung in 1520, when the expeditions of both
kingdoms reached the Pacific Ocean, since there was not
