FAMILY OF JIM KAPALES (of Hoxie, Arkansas)

[last updated 2012-04-09]

I. IN GREECE
Notes
this information comes from: (i) a US immigration document for "Gim S. Kapales"; (ii) a 1980 letter from Stavros
Kalyvas of Goura, Greece; (iii) two 1998 letters from Anastasia (Kapellos) Kalantzis of Aedonia, Nemeas,
Greece; (iv) from an interview by Richard Parker of Stavroula Kalyvas (sister of Jim Kapales) in the village of
Goura in Spring 1981.
Kapellos is a not uncommon name in Greece, but the word is derived from Italian (capello hat). Indeed, other
Kapelloi were pointed out to me as living in the small village of Goura who are not relatives.
Probably due to the name, Stavros Kalyvas deduced that the family had "Frankish" origins (a generic ethnic
word used to refer to Western Europeans and/or Catholics) via Corfu ca. 1815, but the fact that his grandmother
Stavritsa and Stavros himself speaks Albanian makes such a claim doubtful.
Albanians were brought into Greece as military colonists by the Byzantines, and later again by the Turks, so
they are a part of the Greek ethnic fabric. One often finds villages in the same locale, one with a Greek name and
another with an Albanian name. Goura is not, I believe, a Greek word. Today many manual labourers from the
country of Albania come to Greece for work and are regarded in much the same way as Mexicans in the U.S. Thus
no Greek will admit to Albanian origins.
STAVROS + ANASTASIA KAPELLOS ( & ) of Goura ( ), Korinthias
Greece
(Goura is a few km. from the ancient city of Pheneos (site of some of Hercules' exploits: Pausanias 8.14-15). Modern
Greek maps and transportation schedules sometimes use the ancient names, so if you go there beware.
To get there, start from Korinth and take the main coastal highway west. At Kiato (ancient Sicyon) there is a road
leading up into the mountains towards Stymphalos, a tiny village famous for the Herakles legend. Continue up the
mountain and the end of the road is Goura.
Their children:
1. DEMETRIOS (), a son who immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1907 and ended up farming in Hoxie, Arkansas,
a.k.a. James S. Kapales. Born January 4, 1907 in Gorna, Corintheus, Greece (i.e., village of Gourna in distict of
Korinthias). Arrived USA October 15, 1907, married Bertha Mae Ward (born June 26 1895, died 1979?) September 29,
1914; died June 16, 1958.
2. KOSTAS ( is the full formal name), a son who married a Romanian woman and emigrated to Romania.
Supposedly a son survives (in Bucharest?) with the last name KAPELLOZITZ.
3. VASILIS ( = Basil or Vassily), a son who died in 1935
4. CHRISTOS (), a son who had five (5) children
A. ANASTASIA (Tasha) KALANTZIS (daughter of Christos Kapellos) of "Ahdonia NemeaV (roughly between
Stymphalos and Nemea?)
B. YORGOS ( = "George") KAPELLOS of Tarsos a few km. from Goura (uncertain if the name of this
village is correct). This man was introduced as "first cousin of Leo Kapales, Ina (Kapales) Parker etc." R. Parker
deduced that he was the son of Christos, but he could be the son of Kostas.
C, D, E, F. two other sons & two other daughters
5. STAVROULA STAVRITSA (KAPELLOS) KALYVAS ( [] ), a daughter. Born
ca. 1904, she married Kostas Kalybas and lived in Goura (still living there in Spring 1981, when Richard Parker met her).
A. Stavroula's son G.K. Kalyvas had sons & daughters, most notably:
a. STAVROS KALYBAS who wrote to Leo Kapales and Richard Parker in 1980-1981.
6. PHOTO (short for Photine?: ), a daughter who lived in Arphara (?) in Akhaia (north coast of Peloponnesos).
7. PHROSO (), a daughter who died after 1935 but predeceased her parents.
Apparently both of these two had several children
As per Greek custom, 1-7 will have had STAVROU = "of Stavros" [i.e., son or daughter of]) as their "middle" name; it is
an invariable custom among Greeks that the father's name comes between the personal name and the family name.
