2. Review
Before we discuss our lesson for today, let us recall
about sequence.
What is sequence?
There are two kinds of sequence, finite and infinite.
What is finite sequence?
What is infinite sequence?
Identify if the sequence is Infinite or Finite.
1. 3, 7, 11, 15
2. 4, 9,14, 19, 24,
3. 5, 11, 17, 23, 29
4. 8, 17, 26, 35,
5. 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 35,

Sequence is a set of numbers that are in order.

Finite sequence is a sequence that has an end.
Infinite sequence is a sequence that has no end.

3. Motivation:
Before we start our new lesson, lets play a game.
I will group the class into three.
Each group will choose a representative and he
will hold the mouse.
This is the mechanics of the game: A question will
be flashed and each group will select the letter of the
correct answer using the mouse. The group that will
get the correct answer first will get the point and the
group that will get the highest point will be the
winner.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Presentation
Let us analyze the sequence you answered a while
ago.
In the sequence 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62 we can see that
we have 6 terms.
We can also observe that the sequence is increasing
in order. The 1st term is 12, 2nd term is 22, 3rd term is
32 and so on, and 62 will be what term?

62 will be the 6th term.

If we subtract each term to the term next to it, what

can you observe?

Any two consecutive terms have the same

differences.

We call that common difference. Which can be

denoted by (d).
What is the common difference of the sequence?

10 is the common difference. d=10

Base on your observation, what will be the 7th term of 72

the sequence?
How do we obtain the 7th term?

We can get the 7th term by adding the common

difference of the sequence which is 10

This sequence is an example of an Arithmetic

Sequence, where each term after the first is obtained
by adding a constant called common difference.
2. Discussion
In the sequence
12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72
In our sequence, what is our first term?
We can denote the first term by (a1), the 2nd term (a2),
the 3rd term (a3) and so on. The nth term will be an.
Where n is the number of the term.
If we want to find the 20th term, it will take us a lot of
time to get there by just adding the common
difference up to the 20th term.

The first term is 12

It will be easier to obtain the 20th term if we have a

formula.
Lets take a look at the table.
We can show the values of the terms by addition and
also by multiplication to obtain the formula. Using
the values in the table, we can derive formula for the
general term of an arithmetic sequence.

a1+(4-1)d
a1+(5-1)d
a1+(n-1)d

This is the formula that we obtained.

an = a1 + (n - 1)d
What is an, a1, n and d?

an is the general term or missing term

a1 = 12, since 12 is the first term
n = is the number of term
d = 10, where d is the common difference

Having the formula, we can now find the 20th term of

the sequence
12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72
an = a1 + (n - 1)d
a1 = 12, n = 20, d = 10, a20 = ?

a20 = 12 + (20 - 1)10

a20 = 12 + (19)10
a20 = 12 + (190)
a20 = 202

Let us apply the formula in a real life situation.

A gardener buys a Calamansi tree that is 14 cm in height.
Each week after that the plant grows 10cm. What will be
the height of the plant in the 20th week?

3. Application
Let us now use the formula in solving real life
problems.

an =a1+(n-1) d
a1 =14 d=10 n=100 a100=?
a100 =14+(100-1)10
a100 =14+(99)10
a100 =14+(990)
a100 = 1004centimeters

The class will be grouped in four.

Each group will be given one problem to answer and
present the solutions in front.
Problem 1
A farmer harvested apples, after one minute, he got a total
of 5 apples, in two minutes, he got a total of 8, in three
minutes, a total of 11, in four minutes, a total of 14. If he
will continue to harvesting apples, what will be the total
number of apples in 18 minutes?

an =a1+(n-1) d
a1 =5 d=3 n=18 a18=?
a18 =5+(18-1)3
a9 =5+(17)3
a9 =5+(51)
a9 =56apples

Problem 2

Suppose that the ground floor of Golden Empire

Tower in Manila is 6 meters in height and each floor
above it is 4 meters in height.
Taking the ground floor as floor one. Find the height
of the building up to the 17th floor.

an =a1+(n-1) d
a1 =6 d=4 n=17 a17=?
a17 =6+(17-1)4
a17 =6+(16)4
a17 =6+(64)
a17 =70meters

Problem 3
The seats in a theatre are arranged so that each row
accommodates four people more than the previous
row. If the first row seats 50 people, how many
people could will sit in the 9th row?

an =a1+(n-1) d
a1 =50 d=4 n=24 a24=?
a24 =50+(24-1)4
a24 =50+(23)4
a24 =50+(92)
a24 =142

Problem 4

Marjorie is trying to increase her fitness through

exercise. In the first day, she walks 1500 meters
around the oval in front of the Cristo Rey High
school and every day after that she increases this
distance by 100 meters. How far will she be walking
on the 12th day?

C. Generalization
How will you know that the given pattern is an
arithmetic sequence?

an =a1+(n-1) d
a1 =1500 d=100 n=12 a12=?
a12 =1500+(12-1)100
a12 =1500+(11)100
a12 =1500+(1100)
a12 =142

We will know that a pattern is an arithmetic sequence

by getting the differences between the terms and if
the patterns has a common difference, it is an
arithmetic sequence.

What is the formula in getting the terms in

arithmetic sequence?

an = a1 + (n - 1) d

What have you learned in our activity?

We learned that we can apply arithmetic sequence in

real life problems.

IV. Evaluation
A. Solve the problem using the formula in arithmetic sequence.
1. A baker has 400kg of flour on the first day of the month and uses no flour that day. How much will he have
at closing time on the 17th day of the month, if he uses 24kg each day?
V. Assignment
A. Follow-up Assignment
Direction: Answer each of the following problems using the formula in arithmetic sequence.
1. A doctor asked a patient to reduce his medication by a regular number of tablets per week. The reduction plan
begins one week after the visit to the doctor. If 10 weeks after the visit to the doctor the person is taking 40
tablets and 20 weeks after the visit the person is taking 30. Find the weekly reduction in his consumption of
tablets.
2. A restaurant uses square tables and if one person sits on each side how many people can sit at each table?
a. If two tables are pushed together, how many people can be seated? Draw a diagram.
b. If three tables are placed together in a straight line, how many people can be seated? Draw a diagram.
c. If 4 tables are placed together in a straight line. How many people can be seated?
d. Is the pattern in this question an arithmetic sequence? Explain your answer.
